Mclaren has always had a low nose design, the MP4-26's nose is quite low, the same design philosophy has been carried over to the MP4-27. I guess they will stick with whatever work best for their package.

That's exactly what they did. Red Bull had a high nose on the RB6 but will in 2012 continue with the low nose from the RB7 which is bound to be lower. Whether it will stepped like on the Ferrari or curve like the Mclaren will be seen next week. The Ferrari is interestingly tight and compact at the back. They've done a decent job packing the engine and cooling well though not entirely level with the RB7.

Where differences in opinion will be seen is at the rear. Exhaust pipes are rather restricted in their positioning and my be between 10-30 degrees in angle from the reference plane. However there is a bit of flexibility in the outward or inward direction. Either teams can direct them towards the rear wing or down below to the beam wing. What we've seen on this week's cars isn't neccessarily the final exhaust positioning as I am sure teams will explore and fine tune during testing.

Is that the Ferrari branded snow shovel?

BTW. Did something change in rules that every one is sporting these platypus noses?

Yes, the new regulation limit the height of the nose cone for safety reasons.

For 2012 two regulations will limit these very high front chassis designs. The front bulkhead can still be 62.5cm above the reference plane, But an area ahead of that (shaded yellow in the above picture) must be no higher than 55cm. There being a 7.5cm drop between these two surfaces, with some 15cm in which to merge the step created inbetween them.

Lotus Renault launched their new 2012 car, called the E20 by releasing a pre recorded video which is now on youtube. How boring.
