NSX First Look: Acura NSX Concept

The Honda NSX, marketed in North America as the Acura NSX, is a two-seater, rear mid-engined, rear-wheel drive sports car manufactured by Honda. The origins of the NSX trace back to 1984, with the HP-X (Honda Pininfarina eXperimental) concept, for a 3.0 L (180 cu in) V6 rear mid-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car. Honda, with the intention of meeting or exceeding the performance of the then V8 engine Ferrari range, committed to the project, aiming at both reliability and a lower price. The concept evolved and had its name changed to NS-X, which stood for "New", "Sportscar" "eXperimental", although the production model launched as the NSX.
If the sound at the end was of the NSX then I can say it sounds very good, better than the turbo sound of the GT-R, MP4-12C, M5 or any AMG Biturbo. I love NA.

I think engine sound definitely was dubbed to generate some hype through paying some well known celebrities to endorse their concept. In the commercial, it was a V8 sound while Honda has already said they have no plans to develop a V8 and for Honda NSX, it will be a V6 engine mated to a hybrid so I am highly skeptical.

Maybe they will soften the beak a bit for the production model? The car is growing on me and I think it would look much better in white, red or black (albeit with a re-worked nose).

The Toyota CEO is a car enthusiast is is behind the LFA, IS-Fn GT86 and upcoming Supra. Now the new Honda CEO also is one. We could maybe see a revival of Japanese sportcars.

They might be car enthusiast but all that matters for them are profits.

What is the lastest rumor on another Supra???
M

There are plans but nothing is for sure yet. The LF-LC could bring two models, the Lexus SC and the Toyota Supra. But first the GT86 has to be released and sold. Expect he next Supra the be like the NSX, only have the name. I doubt it will have any Twin-Scroll I6 or be anything like a RWD GT-R. Talks are always about a hybrid.

A follow-up to the Super Bowl commercial. Not as much car as the first one.

In the first commercial, besides the Soup Nazi, when when he sneak up on the customer in the beginning I couldn't help thinking he was alluding to the Sidler, the guy who always sneaked up on Elaine. Sorry, rather random, but I do find the commercials amusing.

I also thought the ignition of the engine at the end sounded too bassy to be a V6.

^^^

Honda is trying too hard to build some hype about a car that does not even exist at this point. Using celebrities as "first one's in line", they are hoping to see how many people will be willing to buy this car.

I don't think we can criticise it. Times have changed and both the LFA and GT86 are the last of their kind, though I would like them to continue. We won't anymore see an M3 CSL successor nor will the new McLaren be a true successor of the F1. So I wouldn't hope for an NSX like the first or a Supra like the Mk.IV.
I don't know what my financial situation will be like in 2015 but the car I'd like to own by then will be one of these:
- Lexus SC
- Mercedes SLC
- Honda NSX

IMO this car can truly have potential, as till today there is still no true hybrid sportscar. The Honda CR-Z is nice but underperforming, the Porsche 918 Spyder is nice but unattainable. The BMW i8 is both, underperforming and unattainable so even worse.

I am all for hype building and I agree that it is a step in the right direction for Honda to resurrect NSX. Great for marketing. There is nothing wrong with that.

All I was saying, they should atleast have a working prototype to give people the feel of it and the hype automatically falls into place. What they are using really is a mock-up that is being used in the commercials and the engine noise at the end is that of a V8 engine.

I'm all for hype if it lives up to the hype. Better yet, I'm all for hype if it exceeds it. Right now, I'm cautiously optimistic. Honda's got the experience so hopefully they'll mine the right elements from their glory days and inject them into their upcoming cars and make Honda a great car maker once again.

The NSX is really coming, as Honda is building up hype like Toyota did for the GT86. This could be the first true hybrid sports car, and I wish it to reach or even better surpass the expectations. I bet we'll se a Honda rebadged concept of the NSX in March at Geneva 2012.

Acura Updates NSX Concept (NSX II concept)

Acura has unveiled an updated version of its production-destined NSX concept, which not only gives us a better indication as to what the final version will look like but also the styling of the interior.

You may recall that the previous NSX concept unveiled at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show only showed the exterior, but this updated concept, unveiled again in Detroit, shows off a functional cabin lined in plush leather, and soft-top materials, real metal elements and plenty of carbon fiber.

The layout is said to boast outstanding visibility, while the touch-screen interface, which remains in development, has allowed the cabin to have a clutter-free look.

The exterior design, meanwhile, appears to have received a few tweaks, possibly for improved aerodynamics. The front bumper gains aggressive new lines while a diffuser composed of carbon fiber sits below some new vents at the rear.

The grille also gains some carbon fiber highlights and some of the surfaces have been cleaned up and made more streamlined. It’s clear Acura engineers have been conducting some wind-tunnel tests.

Acura is planning on simple surfacing for its new NSX, which, in combination with edgy details, are aimed at communicating a supercar attitude and a high-tech feel.

Apart from these subtle changes, the latest concept is much the same as the original.

The new NSX, which is expected to be launched around 2015, is being developed here in the U.S. and will be manufactured at a new facility erected in central Ohio.

It will feature a V-6 engine combined with a trio of electric motors and dual-clutch transmission, and sit in a lightweight, mid-engine platform delivering ‘through-the-road’ all-wheel drive. Acura anticipates that its new drivetrain, dubbed “Sport Hybrid SH-AWD”, will deliver handling performance unmatched by previous all-wheel drive systems.

Two of the electric motors power the front wheels independently and a third integrated with the transmission and V-6 powers the rear wheels. Powering the three electric motors is a central lithium-ion battery, topped up with regenerative brakes.

The setup allows multiple driving modes, including electric- or gas-only modes, plus a hybrid mode calling on both electric and gas power and offering all-wheel drive capability. The sophisticated setup utilizes a bilateral torque control system to instantly generate negative or positive torque to the rear wheels during cornering.
