NSX First Look: Acura NSX Concept

The Honda NSX, marketed in North America as the Acura NSX, is a two-seater, rear mid-engined, rear-wheel drive sports car manufactured by Honda. The origins of the NSX trace back to 1984, with the HP-X (Honda Pininfarina eXperimental) concept, for a 3.0 L (180 cu in) V6 rear mid-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car. Honda, with the intention of meeting or exceeding the performance of the then V8 engine Ferrari range, committed to the project, aiming at both reliability and a lower price. The concept evolved and had its name changed to NS-X, which stood for "New", "Sportscar" "eXperimental", although the production model launched as the NSX.

Acura NSX fans will never forget the month of December in 2005. The last NSX bound for the North American market was built then and enthusiasts have been mourning the loss of Honda’s first supercar ever since.

Fast forward seven years. Acura invited a select group of journalists out to its dealer meeting in Las Vegas for a taste of things to come. Along with the new ILX sedan and RDX crossover, we laid eyes on the shapely NSX concept shown here – and, better yet, received word that it previews an actual production car.

That immense lull between NSX models wasn’t exactly intentional. Honda had been working on crafting a flagship sports car for quite a while, but what once seemed like a clear-cut plan quickly became tumultuous.

Let’s recap: although the first-generation NSX ceased to be in 2005, Honda first started hinting at a successor back in 2003, when it began showing the HSC on the global auto show circuit. Two years later, while confirming demise of the original car, the company announced efforts to develop a successor “had intensified.”

True to its word, a concept foreshadowing such a vehicle emerged in early 2007. The Advanced Sports Car Concept, which debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, was said to hint at a new premium sports car, but many enthusiasts had trouble calling it the NSX. The reluctance was understandable, as the formula Honda was pursuing was a far cry from what we’d seen before. The ASCC eschewed a V-6 for a ten-cylinder engine, and also adopted a front engine layout and an all-wheel-drive system.

Spy photographers subsequently caught prototypes testing on public roads, but the project wouldn’t last for long. In 2008, an unstable automotive market and questionable global economic stability led Honda to reconsider its priorities – not surprisingly, an expensive top-tier sports car wasn’t exactly one of them. Although the development of a road car was canceled, the front-engine NSX project served as the basis of Honda’s HSV-010 GT race car for the Japanese Super GT project.

Hope blossomed once again in early 2011, when Takanobu Ito, CEO of the Honda Motor Company and a former engineer on the original NSX project, confirmed his company was once again working on a new NSX.

This latest approach shares virtually nothing with the company’s last stab at an NSX successor. Previous ideas, notably those that called for a ten-cylinder engine to be placed ahead of the passenger compartment, have been discarded in favor of an approach officials believe is much more in line with Acura’s brand identity.

As was the case with the original, the new NSX places its engine smack in the middle of its chassis. That engine will likely be a V-6, but that’s where the similarities with the original car end. As was the case nearly two decades ago, Honda engineers view the car as a halo vehicle, one ideal for showcasing its engineering prowess and its latest and greatest technologies.

Subsequently, the NSX will utilize a form of the new hybrid Super Handling-AWD (SH-AWD) system. The V-6, likely a 3.5- or 3.7-liter, will drive the rear wheels by means of a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Unlike the current SH-AWD system, which would send power to the front wheels by way of a driveshaft and a mechanical differential, the NSX’s front wheels will instead be powered by a pair of electric motors. As each motor is assigned to a wheel, the system has the ability to accelerate the outer wheel in a corner, creating a yaw moment that improves the car’s ability to turn in and rotate. All told, the system could produce a net punch of about 400 hp.

Of course, packaging that sort of technology in a plain wrapper wouldn’t suffice for a halo car. Love it or hate it, the new NSX’s sheetmetal will certainly turn heads. Despite borrowing the Audi R8’s general proportions and stance – i.e. wide track, cabin pushed close to the front axle, etc. – the car has a visual identity all its own.

Acura’s edgy design language takes center stage, but the beleaguered “beak” grille – long a complaint of previous Acura designs – is thankfully nowhere to be found. Thin LED headlamps give way to a panel that dominates the upper half of the grille. The car’s side panels are relatively clean and unspoiled, interrupted only by a rather dramatic light kicker above the rocker panels and a character line that neatly folds into a pair of buttresses that wisp away from the roofline itself. A thin line of LEDs wraps itself into the rear fenders, runs the entire width of the rear fascia, and effectively serves as both brake lights and a center-mounted stop lamp. The display model we were shown lacked a full interior, but appeared to boast a waterfall instrument panel that evolved the twin cockpit theme used in the original NSX.

Although Acura’s only showing the car in coupe form at this point, there are rumblings of a convertible variant, fueled in part by the appearance of a similar-looking roadster on the set of the forthcoming Avengers super hero movie. If approved for production, expect that car to differ only in terms of its decklid, rear fenders, and side character line.

It’s still unclear if the NSX will utilize its own architecture, or perhaps share its platform with another vehicle. It is, however, fairly certain to enter production. Officials tell us the development program is still in its infancy, but the car could enter series production as early as 2015.

Will a hybrid sports car scare off some purists? Perhaps. But it doesn’t necessarily equate to a vehicle that’s not enjoyable to drive. As was the case with the first NSX, engineers are striving for a balance between driving nirvana and daily tractability – albeit this time with an ecological conscience thrown in for good measure.

“The NSX will make the driver one with the car to enhance dynamic driving abilities without getting in the way,” says Honda CEO Ito. “Like the first NSX, we will again express high performance through engineering efficiency – but even as we focus on the fun to drive spirit of the NSX, I think a supercar must respond positively to environmental responsibilities.”

Acura Debuts Three New Vehicles at the 2012 North American International Auto Show

- New ILX compact sports sedan to feature Acura's first hybrid powertrain;
- All-new RDX sport utility vehicle features new engine and all-wheel-drive system;
- NSX Concept to be developed and built in America with new performance hybrid system

DETROIT, Mich., Jan. 9, 2012 – Representing the leading edge of a wave of new products and technologies, Acura today unveiled three new vehicles at the North American International Auto Show, including a concept version of the all-new gateway to the Acura brand, the ILX luxury compact sedan; a prototype of the 2013 RDX crossover sport utility vehicle; and the NSX Concept, which presages the direction for Acura's next-generation supercar.

Acura also announced that the next-generation NSX will feature Acura's innovative new Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® technology and that the vehicle will be developed by Honda R&D Americas and manufactured in Ohio.

"Over the next 24 months the Acura brand will unleash a series of new models that will remake our product lineup and shake up the luxury market," said Jeff Conrad, vice president and general manager of Acura. "Acura will once again defy conventional wisdom to become one of the top luxury brands by creating luxury vehicles based on our own unique values."

Debuting three new models in Detroit heralds the beginning of Acura's second 25 years as a premium luxury-performance automobile brand.

Acura ILX Concept
The Acura ILX Concept is the precursor to an all-new Acura luxury compact sedan scheduled for launch in Spring 2012. To be positioned as the gateway to the Acura brand, the ILX will feature three different powertrains, including Acura's first-ever gas-electric hybrid.

"First time luxury buyers place the highest value on exterior styling, affordability and environmental issues and that's a virtual definition of what we have created with the new Acura ILX," said Jon Ikeda, head of the Acura Design Studio. "The strategy behind this new model is to position ILX as the first opportunity for many young buyers to enter the luxury market."

Sleek, sporty and aerodynamically efficient, the exterior of the all-new Acura ILX combines luxury, performance and efficiency. A beautifully styled luxury sedan, the ILX Concept has a compact, yet formal proportion, targeting a very professional image. The Acura ILX delivers both, with a low and wide stance and a long nose and a short tail that are aerodynamically efficient, the ILX is immediately recognizable as an Acura.

The lineup of ILX models will include an entry-level model powered by a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine; a high-performance model with a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission; and a 1.5-liter gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain, Acura's first-ever hybrid offering.

The ILX will feature a high–quality, well-appointed interior that is smart, spacious and sporty. It will offer a number of new, high-value features, including a smart entry keyless access system and pushbutton start, along with Pandora internet radio interface and SMS text message function for smart connectivity with the world.

As with all Acura models, the ILX will have a longlist of standard features, different trim levels (that will include a Technology Package), multiple transmission choices, and excellent standard safety features- including Acura's acclaimed Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ body structure, front, side and side-curtain airbags, 4-channel anti-lock brakes and Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA™). Acura anticipates that the ILX will achieve top ratings in both NHTSA and IIHS crash safety testing.

The new ILX will be manufactured exclusively by Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC, in its Greensburg, Ind. plant- one of only three plants in the world to receive J.D. Power and Associates' 2011 Platinum Award for outstanding quality.

Acura RDX
Shown as a prototype version of the 2013 RDX, the second generation of Acura's five-passenger crossover SUV will up the ante with a new approach to achieving both advanced performance and fuel efficiency via a new engine, transmission and all-wheel drive system.

The 2013 RDX, scheduled to launch in Spring 2012, will have as standard equipment a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 273 horsepower- 33 more than the outgoing model. For even higher performance and improved fuel economy, the RDX makes use of a 6-speed automatic transmission with a new lock-up torque converter. The RDX also gets a new, lighter all-wheel-drive system that provides the required performance and safety with increased efficiency.

With anticipated EPA fuel economy ratings of 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, front-wheel-drive models of the 2013 RDX are expected to offer the best fuel economy of any gasoline-powered luxury SUV in its class.

The RDX exterior incorporates a sleek, more aerodynamically efficient body, evolving RDX from a sporty, compact SUV to a more formal look with a longer, sculpted hood and styling that is more elegant and sophisticated to match the Acura philosophy of timeless, beautiful design. Chassis updates include a longer wheelbase and wider track, all-new Amplitude Reactive Dampers, and a new motion adaptive electronic power steering system.

Inside the 2013 RDX, new sweeping shapes, matte surface trim, and generous use of leather combine to give the RDX interior an upscale look and luxury feel that Acura customers have come to expect. Abundant use of sound deadening materials and Active Sound Control team to provide an exceptionally quiet cabin. Additional interior features, such as larger door openings, more passenger room, increased cargo volume and a power rear tailgate make the RDX interior even more accommodating and flexible.

As with the ILX, the 2013 RDX will receive a host of new technologies including Pandora internet radio interface, SMS text message feature, a smart entry keyless access system, pushbutton start, and a three view rear camera. An available Technology Package will provide a full complement of relevant technologies, including AcuraLink® Satellite Communication System, Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™, AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic with Traffic Rerouting™, and AcuraLink Real-Time Weather™ with radar image maps. New for 2013, the even more advanced navigation system utilizes a hard disk drive (HDD) with 60 gigabytes of storage capacity – including 15 gigabytes that can be allocated for music storage.

Acura anticipates that the RDX will achieve top ratings in both NHTSA and IIHS crash safety testing.

Production of the new RDX will move to the East Liberty, Ohio plant of Honda of America Mfg., Inc.- home to one of the four top assembly lines in North America in the J.D. Power and Associates' 2011 Initial Quality Study (IQS). The first generation RDX has been built at the Marysville, Ohio auto plant, an IQS award winner for both of its assembly lines.

Acura NSX Concept
The dynamically-styled NSX Concept gives an indication of the next great performance vehicle from the Acura brand. Making use of lightweight materials and a mid-mounted V-6 engine, the NSX Concept employs several new technologies for Acura, including application of Acura's innovative new Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® (Super Handling All Wheel Drive™) hybrid system.

Utilizing a unique 2 Electric Motor Drive Unit with a Bilateral Torque Adjustable Control System, the all-new hybrid all-wheel-drive system can instantly generate negative or positive torque to the front wheels during cornering. Acura anticipates the new Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® will deliver handling performance unmatched by previous AWD systems. In addition to the handling benefits of the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® system, a powerful next-generation VTEC® V-6 engine with direct-injection works in concert with a dual clutch transmission with built-in electric motor to create supercar acceleration while offering outstanding efficiency.

"This Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system will make NSX the ultimate expression of Acura's idea to create synergy between man and machine," said Takanobu Ito, president and CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. "The NSX will make the driver one with the car to enhance dynamic driving abilities without getting in the way."

While most supercars opt for brute force delivered from a large engine, the NSX Concept champions the true racing philosophy of an extremely favorable power-to-weight ratio.
"Like the first NSX, we will again express high performance through engineering efficiency," added Ito, who led the development of Acura's first NSX supercar. "In this new era, even as we focus on the fun to drive spirit of the NSX, I think a supercar must respond positively to environmental responsibilities."

The new Acura supercar, expected to debut in the next three years, will be developed by an engineering team led by Honda R&D Americas, Inc., and manufactured in Ohio, at a yet to be named facility.

- Acura NSX Concept portends an efficient hybrid supercar

It does not look bad. Perhaps a bit too much like a Gallardo on the back 3/4, but overall a good effort. What will really be crucial, though, is how it drives.
This is the kind of car where how it drives is the most crucial factor. If a hybrid car can have the kind of driving purity we saw in the first NSX, this car will write its name in the history books. :)

I think that whoever designed the car needs to let go of his ruler. All I see is a bunch of lines. It could as well be a generic super car in a game made by developers who couldn't secure licensing rights from Ferrari, Lamborghini or Audi.

Lots of R8 tones here although I think the rear is better resolved in the 3/4 shots anyway. Too bad they are perpetuating that Acura nose treatment, definitely needs to be toned down.

Agree that it looks like a generic super car.

+1. A bunch of lines that start and end at really random places, like Acura's current design.

IMO the configuration of the NSX is better than the one of the i8, but the i8 is the most special and orignal looking supercars among the R8, Gallardo, 458 Italia and MP4-12C.

I think the body shape of the 2002 Acura NSX is more original and memorable than the above.

so it's a mix of R8 and MP4-12C.

So where do I begin? I like it, but I wouldn't call it an NSX successor. The NSX had a purity to it. The lines were simple that created something slim, purposeful and agile. Granted this is a concept, but this looks bulky and convoluted. It's weird, I like it but I don't want to like it.

Regarding the powertrain, well, it is what it is. Unless it's superlight, it needs more than 400 hp. Something in the ballpark of 525 hp, and that's being on the bottom end of the competition.

Reminds all these cars: Audi R8, Lamborghini Gallardo, McLaren MP4-12C and Lotus Esprit. It is not bad, but very generic, like from a video game as Ridge Racer for example.

They could at least make it like the HSC Concept but it is really not easy to make it better than it was:

Probably the best interior of any sportscar.

The new NSX is like a Gallardo? I'll take the old NSX over a Gallardo.

OK, I think I'll stop before we completly start disliking the new NSX.

:D

I'm in love with this car :icondrool With about everything !!!!
This, the Esprit or the Gallardo replacement will definitely be in my garage in the near future :t-drive:
I love it !!!!

Yes, even if the NSX won't be the best among the next Gallardo and Esprit, at least it will look good a be something less common.

Yes, if it is something about 80.000 € it is very nice. 458 Italia, Cabrera, MP4-12C, Esprit will be about 200.000 €, BMW i8 about 150.000 € and a base R8 will start at 100.000 €, it may get a new FI V6 instead of the NA V8.
