I think the 1 Series is ugly, but it wouldn't put me off buying one.
What could put me off is the fact that it IS rear wheel drive. I live on a bit of a hill (there a few in Holland), and having the engine over the driven wheels is a big advantage in bad weather. Would I care if a FWD car isn't quite as sporty? Not at all. These cars are hardly track day specials. They're utilitarian most of the time. I couldn't give a toss what the handling was like on the limit. What I care about is fuel economy, a comfortable cabin, the ability to park easily, and a reasonable price. When I'm driving a supercar, then I will swap the criteria around, so I wouldn't care what the fuel economy was like, whether it was easy to park, or whether it has a comfortable cabin. But I would want good handling.
To think handling, driving satisfaction and RWD is the be all and end all the WHOLE time is just misguided. I strongly think the vast majority of people couldn't give a toss, as the 80% of 1 Series drivers who think their car is FWD will testify.
