B3 coupe with 360hp I6 and M3 coupe with 420 hp V8. In the 5 series case, the M5 has 507hp and a V10 while the B5 has a 500hp V8...

Much bigger hp difference in the 3er coupe. I don't think that B3 and M3 are direct competitors. IMO the B3 is a more comfortable and waaay less hardcore M3 alternative.. 60hp is a big enough power difference..
