Comparison tests Sport Auto - BMW Alpina D5 Biturbo vs. BMW M550d x-Drive

Hi guys,

since Sport Auto failed to publish a proper head-to-head comparison between these two super-diesels (despite they tested both cars on the very same day) I decided to compared them on one place.
So here's the datapanel, for pure comparison.

The D5 is more flexible, has a much lower fuel consumption and (partly) thanks to its grippy Super Sport tyres it humilates the M550d around the Hockenheimring (2,5 s advantage per lap).

"A bit less power and torque - but higher topspeed and better flexibility. It looks nobler in and out - for less money. Same comfort - much more agility. (...) Sorry BMW - Congratulations Alpina. I'm surprised that a twin turbo setup would prove to be the more flexible in-gear. This comparison whilst not damning against the M550d it does suggest that all that hard work of developing a tri-turbo setup wasn't necessary.

Impressive result eh? The edge the 550d has is as a result of its higher power output so acceleration and top speed is superior however the flexibility is less impressive than one would assume.
