Cadillac has revealed the new 2019 CT6 V-Sport, the first hot version of the range-topping sedan and the company’s first model to feature their all-new twin-turbo 4.2-liter V8.

The new range-topper is also our first look at the facelifted CT6 range, which now adopts the latest version of Cadillac’s design language, as feature on the Escala concept.

Under the bonnet lies Cadillac’s all-new twin-turbo 4.2-liter V8 that produces an estimated 550hp and 627lb-ft (850Nm) of peak torque. Cadillac says that the engine is a clean-sheet design that introduces unique elements, offering a balance between performance and efficiency, along with compact packaging.

The new powerplant adopts a “hot-V” configuration, meaning that the turbochargers are mounted between the heads, eliminating turbo lag and helping into reducing the packaging.

The new 4.2-liter V8 sends its power to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. Cadillac says that they have revised the torque split of the all-wheel drive system. The chassis also features a mechanical limited-slip rear differential and a V-Sport specific suspension with modified Magnetic Ride Control dampers.

The brake system is from Brembo and was developed specifically for the 2019 CT6 V-Sport, measuring 19 inches in diameter and featuring four-piston calipers.

“The CT6 V-Sport was developed for driving enthusiasts who want the best of both worlds: a high-performance sports sedan and a luxury car with all the comforts and technology that come with it,” said Lyndon Lie, CT6 chief engineer.

“With its lightweight architecture, an all-new Cadillac Twin Turbo V-8 coupled with the tightened suspension and revised AWD torque split, we’ve enhanced the CT6 to be well-balanced and capable of all conditions.”

Now that's what I'm talking about. Great job, mr. JDN.

Remember, that Johan has just upgraded the model, which was created before him. There also will be XT7(Cayenne's rival). Just got the confirmation about it. XT8 - SUV flagman, which will go global, new Escalade. CT7- big coupe. CT8(Escala) - different variants.
XT4,XT5,XT6 - will all be based on RWD in their second generation. There also will be different new V8 engines. This is just one of it)

Cadillac begins a new chapter in its high-performance legacy with today’s introduction of the brand’s first-ever twin-turbo V-8 engine. It is the centerpiece of the new CT6 V-Sport, an engaging sports sedan infused with DNA of Cadillac’s world-renowned motorsports program.

Developed as a small-displacement V-8 in the classic vein and offering exceptional power density of 131 hp (98 kW) per liter, this new Cadillac-exclusive 4.2L Twin Turbo V-8 — GM estimated at 550 horsepower (410 kW) and 627 lb-ft of torque (850 Nm) — elevates the CT6’s performance to a new plateau and offers drivers an unparalleled experience behind the wheel. An optional 500-horsepower version will also be available.

“Cadillac’s performance technology reaches new heights with the new and exclusive 4.2L Twin Turbo V-8,” said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen. “The engineering prowess embodies the very spirt of Cadillac performance on and off the racetrack.”

The new Cadillac Twin Turbo V-8 is a clean-sheet design that also introduces unique design elements developed to balance performance and efficiency with compact, mass-efficient packaging.

“Designing an all-new engine was the best way to achieve the performance goals for the CT6 V-Sport,” said Jordan Lee, 4.2L TT V-8 chief engineer. “It builds on Cadillac’s well-established turbocharging know-how and forges new ground with innovative features that deliver exceptional performance and refinement.”

At the center of the 4.2L Twin Turbo V-8 is a “hot V” configuration that transposes the conventional layout of the cylinder heads’ intake and exhaust systems to mount the turbochargers at the top of the engine — in the valley between the heads — to virtually eliminate turbo lag and reduce the engine’s overall packaging size.

In a conventional turbocharged engine, the cylinder heads receive the pressurized air charge through ports at the top of the engine and the exhaust exits through ports on the lower outside of the heads into manifolds connected to the turbochargers.

With Cadillac’s innovative hot V design, the intake-charged air enters through the lower outside of the heads and exits through the top inside — where the turbochargers are integrated with the exhaust manifolds — for quick spool-up that translates into more immediate power delivery. The design also allows closer mounting of the catalytic converters, for efficient packaging.

Additional engine highlights:

Twin-scroll turbochargers
Electronic wastegate control
Twin water-to-air charge coolers
Twin throttle bodies
Direct injection
Dual-independent camshaft phasing
Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation)
Variable-pressure oiling system
Stop/start technology

Each engine will be hand-built at the Performance Build Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

SMALL DISPLACEMENT, LARGE EFFECT

The new Cadillac Twin Turbo V-8’s foundation is an all-new, durable and lightweight aluminum cylinder block that houses an equally robust, lightweight rotating assembly composed of a forged steel crankshaft, forged steel connecting rods and high-strength aluminum pistons.

The crankshaft’s 90.2mm (3.55 inch) stroke complements the cylinder bores’ 86mm (3.39 inch) diameter to give the engine its 4.2L (255 cubic-inch) displacement.

Its comparatively small bore dimension enables the reduction in the size and weight of the pistons, optimizing the engine’s geometry to match the fast-rev capability permitted by the engine’s low-inertia, twin-scroll turbochargers. The result is exceptional responsiveness and immediacy of power across the rpm band.

The turbochargers produce up to 20 pounds of boost (1.38 bar) and are matched with electronic wastegate control for more precise boost management and more responsive torque production. In fact, 90 percent of the engine’s peak torque is available at only 2000 rpm, and it is carried through 5200 rpm for a confident, virtually bottomless power reserve.

Very nice that engine reads very German too many with the class leading dynamics that most Cadillacs have it should be a good alternative.

This looks promising especially with this new V8, but I said that when the CT6 originally debuted. I think they ought to move the rear license place holder to the bumper so they could display the Caddy emblem more prominently. Front lights look good. Wish the rear lights were better but it's not terrible. Need more interior pics. Seems like they went with a click-wheel interface for their multimedia.

Honestly the interior is going to be the thing that continues to hold this car back. We won't really see what Cadillac is capable of until the Escala and next-gen Escalade appear.

That's true, but this engine is really impressive. That torque figure is stunning and way (RPM) that it is delivered. Now the new smaller CT5 should get this engine in the V model, will be a killer with the chassis that Cadillac has.

M

Wow, very impressive. Now, just take care of the interior with Cadillac exclusive interiors and they’ll be in a good spot.

19 inch brake calipers? ... did i read that right? That’s insane.

.... And the CT5.

XT4,XT6 - will get very nice interiors compared to the competitors. But the real game will start from the CT5-Escalade....

They have upgraded this car's interior. It is enough till the real replacement.
JDN concentrates on the brand new models.

P.s. It is also planned 5.5 V8 in different versions for the new models.

And this:

In addition to the introduction of the CT6 V-Sport, the 2019 CT6 lineup incorporates Cadillac’s new “Y” trim strategy for its models — each model will have Luxury and Sport trims with distinct personas and features

Great!

Forgive my ignorance guys but what does this car compete against? E63 or S63? either way it's under powered so why it's impressive? what am i missing here?

Not underpowered, this is not the top spec. This is supposed to compete with the M550, S6, and E53 until the CT5 arrives, meaning it has a 80-100hp advantage while being cheaper. Plus it’s lighter than both, so on paper it’ll destroy both when it comes to performance.

The CTS-V already has 640hp.

Why are they showboating with specific output, it's a turbo engine.

CT5 won't go against the E63/M5. Its gonna be a D-class car. M3/C63 - yes.
Cadillac won't have a truly E-class car before the CT6's replacement. So this gen will play the E-class role before that. And from the second gen its gonna be a truly E-class. Probably will be reduced a little for that.

This is strange, but thats the mistakes that previous Cadillac team has done. But JDN will take care of that.

^ so no more ‘tweeners then. The CT6, XTS, and even CTS have been in no man’s land when it comes to segmentation, price, exterior dimensions, interior dimensions, etc.. Really hurt all cars to this point.

I see a CTS on the road it it seems to be closer in length to a 650i GC rather than a 5 series.

Well, yes. No more tweeners.

ATS is small for the D-class.
CTS is small for the E-class. (inside space, trunk, width).

What is the conclusion? Thats right: combine these two models in a truly D-class(CT5).And this decision also leaves a space for the little C-class car(which is already confirmed by JDN) and for the E-class car...

So this is probably the same engine that will end up in the mid engined Corvette??

Knowing GM, yeah probably. They're going to milk the "Cadillac exclusive" marketing till then though.

* Acutally, leaked C8 documents confirm this engine with various outputs.
