Another silly rumor/speculation

Is Alonso playing dirty to undermine Lewis?
Thursday 12th July 2007

Fernando Alonso has been accused of playing dirty by deliberately confusing Lewis Hamilton over set-up.

In an intriguing twist to the in-house McLaren battle for the World Championship, it is suggested that Alonso has adopted a policy of go-slow on Fridays in order to effectively sabotage his team-mate's prospects of victory.

Since being promoted to the role of race driver at McLaren, the British rookie has made no secret of his tendency to copy Fernando's set-up, but, it is alleged, he has now been sent down a dead-end by the cunning Spaniard.

Following his defeat at Indianapolis, where he topped the timesheets in all three practive sessions as well as the first two qualifying stints, Alonso's performances on Friday at both Magny-Cours and Silverstone have been been notably tardy.

In France, the double World Champion finished the opening day in a lowly eighth, whilst in Britain he was similarly uncompetitive, setting the sixth-fastest lap time of the day, almost a full second slower than pacesetter Kimi Raikkonen. On the Saturday, however, he immediately bounced back, recording a lap time in qualifying that was considerably faster than Hamilton's once fuel levels had been taken into account.

"On Saturday I went faster than Hamilton but then with less fuel in the tank he was able to win pole, and it seemed that there was a big party," Alonso reflected smugly. "Because of that, finishing ahead of him tastes even sweeter. Since Canada I have been a lot quicker than him."

To ensure harmony within the team, Ron Dennis has ordered both drivers to attend debriefings together, as well as share telemetry. Yet it could be that Hamilton has been sent a dummy at the past two events.

The youngster bemoaned his set-up after his deflating performance at Silverstone, and it is also claimed that he made a critical error when he misdiagnosed oversteer at his first pit stop during Sunday's race.

'Lewis called for a bit less front grip, which was achieved through amended tyre pressures and a front wing adjustment, but he got it wrong - on the middle stint the car understeered badly,' reported ITV's Ted Kravitz.

'The tyres started to grain and as they lost more and more grip, the fronts started to lock up under braking, which compounded the problem.

'Lewis also had a different rear suspension to Fernando that wasn't as kind to the tyres, and lost him more speed. The question is whether that was Lewis' choice, or whether there was only one new suspension available, and Alonso got it first.'

So I don't get, what's the dirty part ?!

If true, Hamilton should simply learn to make his own setup, instead of coping Alonso's, and/or provide the input to the engineer on suspension, wings or whatever.

Other "inferior legends" didn't have it so easy, so why should he ?!

How dare you allege racing god/F1 legend Hamilton of copying anyone! He is a true British original! Every legend is inferior when compared to __________.

Bourdais and Vettel at STR
'Two Sebastians' move closer

Jul.17 (GMM) Gerhard Berger is edging ever-nearer to rubber-stamping his preferred driver lineup for 2008.

After saying multiple Champ Car title winner Sebastien Bourdais "has my support" in his bid to land a Toro Rosso seat, former ten time GP winner Berger also enthused about another driver.

BMW test driver Sebastian Vettel, 20, has also been linked with an STR contract in 2008, and 50 per cent team owner Berger told Auto Motor und Sport: "The boy impresses me.

"He has brains and the right attitude for the job -- and that is already half of everything you need."

Austrian Berger does, however, reserve some caution about German Vettel's outright pace, after he finished behind a Renault, Toyota and Red Bull whilst substituting on debut for the injured Robert Kubica in the US grand prix this year.

Behind Ferrari and McLaren, BMW-Sauber's car is undoubtedly the third quickest this year.

Berger said: "We would only find out really how quick he is after a few races, because it is hard to judge after just one."

Re: Silly Season Rumors!

i bet both STR drivers will lose their seat next year. but i think among the 2, Scott SPeed is doing a better job at the moment.

but i question their move, for a rookie team, to have rookie driver(s)?

they should go for something like Renault's strategy. one veteran, and one rookie. but i'd love to see Vettel get the other seat tho. then perhaps, after 2-4 seasons with that team, he can move back to Beemer, and hopefully by that time, they're regular front runners, and we can see a potential young champ :)

Barrichello stays for one more year
Honda line up done

Jul.19 (GMM) The news is yet to be confirmed by the Japanese team, but Rubens Barrichello has signed a new one-year contract to keep racing for Honda in 2008.

The 35-year-old, who is the most experienced driver on the grid albeit younger than David Coulthard, revealed ahead of the European grand prix that he will stay on for a third consecutive season with the Brackley based outfit.

"When I came here in 2006, it was always my intention to develop a long-term relationship and help build a strong team together," Barrichello, 35, who switched from Ferrari at the end of the 2005 season, said on Thursday.

2007 has been an uncompetitive season for the Honda team, but Barrichello also indicated that current teammate Jenson Button will be honouring his long-term deal into next year.

He said: "Jenson and I have a great relationship together as team-mates and stability will be key as we look forward to the challenge of 2008.

"For now though, we have eight races remaining and that is where our focus lies."

STR to confirm Bourdais deal

Multiple Champ Car title winner Sebastien Bourdais has now reached a deal with the Faenza based team to replace Vitantonio Liuzzi from 2008, the Swiss publication Motorsport Aktuell claimed.

28-year-old Bourdais, a Frenchman from Le Mans, will join the already-confirmed German rookie Sebastian Vettel in the team, and plans to relocate from Florida to Europe with his wife Claire and their baby daughter Emma.

Motorsport Aktuell reported that Bourdais was tying up loose ends with his American employer Newman/Haas so that an official announcement could theoretically be made on Wednesday.

Re: F1 Silly Season Rumors!

Silly season in full flow

Aug.13 (GMM) The vague future plans of both Fernando Alonso and Nico Rosberg look set to spice up the 'silly season' as formula one rests in the summer break.

Media reports at the weekend said both drivers could be on the move at the end of the season, with Williams' impressive Rosberg, who is 22 and the son of 1982 world champion Keke, possibly filling the McLaren seat of disgruntled reigning world champion Alonso.

The German newspaper Bild am Sonntag said Rosberg to McLaren, a transfer that would be worth millions of dollars to the German's current employer Sir Frank Williams, is currently a "hot rumour" in formula one circles.

Alonso and BMW-Sauber, meanwhile, are tipped to be interested in each other for 2008; sparking the frenzied attention of the 26-year-old's former manager and Renault boss, Flavio Briatore.

The Spanish newspaper Marca confidently reports that the Italian, who is currently holidaying off the coast of Sardinia, plans to personally meet with Alonso at the upcoming Turkish grand prix.

'Marca' said Briatore was planning to pair Nelson Piquet Jr with Heikki Kovalainen for 2008 "until in his motorhome in Hungary he had the unexpected visit of Luis Garcia Abad", who the current McLaren driver's manager, and also Alonso's father Jose.

The trio subsequently met for a second time at the Hungaroring a little over a week ago, the newspaper added.

Telefonica may back Alonso’s Renault return

Telefonica may back Alonso’s Renault return

Spanish telecommunications giant Telefonica has reportedly backed Flavio Briatore’s campaign to reunite Renault with Fernando Alonso.Coinciding with reigning world champion and Spaniard Alonso’s switch to McLaren, the Madrid based company - previously pledging $30m per year to Renault as a major sponsor - left the French team at the end of 2006. But subsequent to reports that the Enstone based outfit’s team principal Briatore is planning a meeting with Alonso in Turkey later this month, the specialist magazine Auto Motor und Sport says Telefonica might be willing to return to Renault if the disgruntled 26-year-old also comes back.
Triple world champion and commentator Niki Lauda told Bild newspaper that he doubts Briatore would fork out the necessary money to re-hire Alonso — unless a big backer like Telefonica can help. In addition to Alonso’s current (US) $27m per year salary, Briatore might also have to foot a multi-million bill to buy out Alonso’s McLaren contract.

“Briatore has never been willing to pay bills of that size,” Austrian legend Lauda noted. (GMM)

Various Formula 1 News

I suggest we start a new topic that we can discuss several F1 news.

I am kicking it off by some speculation about Alonso...

"Alonso might have rejected peace-talks vacation
A McLaren get-together on water
16/08/07 14:18

Fernando Alonso has reportedly turned down an invitation to join his teammate and bosses for a vacation to calm the worsening tension that exists within McLaren.

The reigning World Champion's relationships with Britons Lewis Hamilton and Ron Dennis descended to new lows at the recent Hungarian Grand Prix, sparking speculation that the only solution might be for him to leave the team."

But coinciding with the calendar's current August break, team shareholder and co-founder Mansour Ojjeh invited all of McLaren's major players to the deck of Kogo -- his incredible 72-metre super-yacht.

Championship leader Hamilton is already on board, giving British paparazzi the opportunity last week to photograph him frolicking with Ojjeh's daughter Sara in St. Tropez.

The multi-million dollar yacht, apparently also now occupied by Team Principal Dennis, was to make its way to the Spanish waters of Menorca this week, where Alonso was touted to join the vacation.

The Spanish newspaper Marca, however, claims that the 26-year-old turned down Ojjeh's invitation -- possibly a sign that his association with his Woking-based employer is indeed untenable and irreconcilable.

it seems that it's just a rumour after all. Sara's pretty hot, but u know the media guys, with a long holiday now, everyone's scrambling for news.

Well here's the latest spin:

Alonso wants to stay at McLaren - Haug
Mercedes boss confident Alonso will stay 20/08/07 11:00

Norbert Haug has again rejected persistent speculation that Fernando Alonso is looking to leave the McLaren team.

The German, who is competition director for McLaren's engine and equity partner Mercedes-Benz, recently flatly denied that Ron Dennis has given Alonso a green light to walk away from his contract amid his discomfort in 2007.

"There is a contract," Haug now tells the German-language news magazine Focus, referring to Spaniard Alonso's three year deal that began this season.

He added of Alonso: "And in Hungary, without being asked, he verbally confirmed that he

intends to fulfil it.
"

Haug, meanwhile, described the intense rivalry between 26-year-old Alonso and his rookie team-mate Lewis Hamilton as 'healthy'.

"In Hungary however it was not," the German added.

Renault now focusing on 2008
Monday, 20, August, 2007, 12:51

Renault has decided to concentrate its resources on preparing for next season as it attempts to return to its winning ways after a barren 2007 campaign to date.

The reigning world champion squad hasn’t come close to winning a race this year and lies a distant fourth in the constructors’ standings, 38 points behind BMW Sauber.

While it says it will be working hard to optimise recent upgrades over the rest of the season, technical director Bob Bell admits the team has switched its focus at its Enstone base from developing the R27 to building a better car for 2008.

“We will have some minor aerodynamic upgrades in Turkey, and a new aero package in Monza adapted to the very low drag set-up we require there,” he said.

“We will also be working hard to extract more performance at the track from our most recent developments.

“Back at the factory, though, the moment has come to focus our energies on 2008.

“We have always said that our problems this year would not compromise next year’s programme, and that remains the case.”

By its own admission, Renault’s preparations for 2007 were put on the back burner as it devoted its full energies last autumn to the intense title battle with Ferrari.

With no such constraints this year, the team has been able to get an early start on the R28 project.

“Our design and development resources are already focusing intently on 2008,” Bell continued.

“We began work on the car early, and our approach has been quite different to recent years.

“First and foremost, we had to be certain that our development tools were working correctly.

“Once this was confirmed, we began putting a lot of energy into the design of the new car.

“The project is on time, and we have been exploring some very interesting new development paths.”

Renault’s mid-season target was to overhaul BMW in terms of first performance and ultimately constructors’ championship points.

But Bell admits the Hinwil-based squad has reasserted its superiority in the last few races and currently has the faster car – though he hopes Renault will have the edge at some of the remaining tracks.

“The top two teams are clearly still a step ahead, and it will be difficult for anybody to race with them,” he said.

“Looking at BMW, they have taken a definite step forward in the last few races and they remain, at this stage of the year, quicker than us.

“Williams and Toyota have moved forward too.

“I think that it we continue to work well and to get the most from the car, then we are capable of beating BMW on a number of occasions before the end of the year.

“That remains our target.”

Piquet and Renault

There is much talk in Holland that Nelson Piquet Jr will replace Giancarlo Fisichella at Renault next season. Piquet is half Brazilian and half Dutch and while Renault has yet to confirm its driver line-up for 2008, the team has obviously been holding out a hope that Fernando Alonso would leave McLaren and go back to his old team. The fact that BMW re-signed its two drivers suggests that he is not available.

Renault was caught on the hop by Alonso’s decision to quit the team back at the end of 2005 and was not able to sign a top star for the 2007 season as all the big names were under contract elsewhere. Team boss Flavio Briatore reckoned that Heikki Kovalainen would grow into a replacement for Alonso but, despite many thousands of kilometres of testing, his progress has been disappointing although he has now finally overtaken Giancarlo Fisichella in the Drivers' World Championship.

Other sources say that McLaren is going to be willing to release Alonso, but this seems unlikely as it makes no sense for McLaren to free one of its biggest assets to a rival team, thus making life difficult for itself. The team has said that Fernando has a contract and hopes that he will honour it. If he does not, it is likely that he will have to sit out 2008 unless some kind of swap could be arranged with another team which would give McLaren a suitable team-mate for Lewis Hamilton. The only driver likely to fit the bill would be Nico Rosberg. Williams would not say no if Alonso came knocking on the door.

Keeping Fisichella in 2008 makes little sense for Renault. He is a solid driver who scores points when he can but he still makes mistakes - as was seen in Turkey. Signing Piquet is a risk but Briatore may be hoping that he will become the star that Kovalainen was supposed to be.

The key issue at Renault, however, is not the drivers because they can do little without a good car. An average driver in a great car can win races in F1, but it is a lot harder for a great driver in an average car. The other point is that Renault has made no secret of the fact that it wants the F1 programme to be cost-effective and thus paying millions for Fernando Alonso makes little sense, unless Briatore can find someone else to pay the Spaniard's salary.

Another Alonso/BMW rumour.

Report - Alonso to BMW in 2009

Aug.28 (GMM) Fernando Alonso could emerge in a BMW-Sauber cockpit in 2009, according to reports.

The German newspaper Express claims that, while the Hinwil based team's race lineup is already sealed for next year, Spaniard Alonso is in boss Mario Theissen's sights for the season after.

Alonso, 26, is clearly unhappy at McLaren, where he signed a three-year contract covering 2007-2009.

But 'Express' said Alonso's manager, Luis Garcia-Abad, had recently been negotiating with both BMW-Sauber and Renault after uncovering a loophole in the McLaren contract.

While McLaren escaped formal sanctions in the recent World Motor Sport Council meeting, the team was actually found in breach of article 151c of the International Sporting Code -- a scenario that arguably voids Alonso's deal.

The Alonso-to-BMW rumour also coincides with Theissen's refusal recently to confirm whether Nick Heidfeld's new contract with the team extends beyond 2008.

For this to work, he'd have to leave either now or at the end of the season. He can't wait until the end of 2008 and then use the loophole.

I'm not a lawyer, but I'm pretty sure that by continuing to drive, even if you think you're not under contract, your actions stipulate that you've given up your right to contest that clause. Unless they reoffend.

It wouldn't be good faith or him to drive in '08 and then say, "oh, I've got a better option now, so because of that thing you did two seasons ago, my contract is now void".

`Alonso has sealed his McLaren exit`
Tuesday 28th August 2007

Fresh reports that Fernando Alonso could leave McLaren at the end of the season have emerged after his Turkish GP outburst.

The McLaren driver, who is second in the Drivers' standings, told BBC Radio Five Live at the weekend that he felt unappreciated by the Woking team.

"I gave the team a lot. When I arrived in December, I remember the car I drove; I remember the results they had in 2006. And now, I brought to the team half a second, six-tenths, whatever, and I don't see anything giving me back," Alonso said.

And even though later in the weekend he claimed he would see out his full contract with McLaren, some are predicting that the team may not want him to.

'You could also file it under "stupid comments made by a basically decent bloke who should know better",' The Independent newspaper said of Alonso's comments.

'There is a chance that McLaren will instead deposit Alonso's statement in a drawer labeled "close the door on your way out".'

'Internally, things are so bad that senior figures have complained about the Spaniard to Dennis, and rumours in Turkey suggest that the champion has already had secret talks with his old principal, Flavio Briatore at Renault, about a possible return next year.'

The newspaper also reports that, during clear-the-air talks, Alonso told his team-mate Lewis Hamilton that 'his beef was not with him but with the team.'

Briatore wants Alonso with Renault
''I would love to have Fernando back''
28/08/07 15:09

Flavio Briatore openly admitted on Tuesday that he would be delighted to woo Fernando Alonso back to Renault in 2008.

The French team's boss, who brought the Spaniard into Formula One in 2001 and still maintains a financial interest in his career, told the Spanish sports newspaper Marca that reigning World Champion Alonso was a "far better" driver at Renault.

"You can see that if you are Spanish, I know that -- even the Turks know it," Briatore, an arch-nemesis of Alonso's current McLaren boss Ron Dennis, said.

"It is obvious that I would love to have Fernando back."

Also obvious, Briatore said, is Alonso's unhappiness in 2007, and - asked if he could see him staying at McLaren next year - answered: "I have no idea. I love Fernando, but he already has a contract (for 2008).
"

Briatore's interview on Tuesday coincides with speculation that Alonso's manager Luis Garcia-Abad might have found a way out of the 2008 McLaren deal.

"If he is free, for whatever reason, and I don't know his contract, but if he is free tomorrow I think Renault, Toyota, Williams, everybody (would be interested)," Briatore concluded.

it's really funny. JPM once was quoted saying that Fred made a terrible mistake in signing for Mac. According to JPM, Mac doesn't have the proper style to handle it's drivers, and they destroyed his career.

looks like what Monty predicted is coming thru after all.

but i won't say Mac doesn't know how to take care of it's drivers.

it's more like Fred is all rattled and shaken with the fact that Lewis is as quick as him, and potentially faster than him.
