F1 F1 braced for BMW exit announcement ?!

I don't know what all the 'fuzz' is about - we BMW fans wanted BMW to quit F1 (I know Scott can recall te discussion around the topic).

SCOTT DO YOU REMEMBER???????????????????????????????????

BMW could use the money they WASTE on F1 for better future product developmet i.e. a true BMW supercar etc...:t-cheers:
AND also get involved in more relevant motorsport.

Yipeee!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF... BMW Quits F1 :usa7uh:

If they quit now, which is now official BTW and told on every german newspaper, they'll appear like loosers. Just like Honda.

They'll say of course it's because of the recent developments, because it's not "efficient dynamics" enough (despite they killing their KERS), but in fact everybody will know it's because it's their third year and they're still lagging behind...

It's quite a coward decision IMO. Quitting when you're that bad is a bit humiliating.

BMW is going to have the "Loser" tag hung around its neck for the next ten years. They should tough it out like Toyota and Mercedes Benz. This is why I always held Mercedes at a higher regard.

Even in DTM in 1990's, BMW just quit when they could no longer beat Mercedes.

I'm sure they will also quit WTCC very soon because the front-wheel drive cars are running rings around them.

I think we now know for sure that BMW cannot do the following:

1) Top flight motor racing
2) Decent coupes and sportscars larger than a 3 series
3) Supercars

There is a reason why BMW has always been known as the 3-series company while Mercedes-Benz is THE S-Class company.

It's not a coward decision when there is hundreds of millions of Euros involved. Company first, then everything else.

I won't say I'm happy that they are leaving, but it's not like it's the end of BMW or something. Anyways, F1 is getting pretty boring with all the regulations that don't make any sense. I can't wait until WRC is shown on HD Theater in the US, finally something badass to watch.

THE largest producer of luxury cars including the new Z4 and upcoming replacement for the 6er....is BMW and their future strategy looks even brighter that any 3er build...

F1 has turned into a circus! I would prefer BMW to quit F1 and also - through good planning and investments stay the worlds most SUSTAINABLE car manufacturer in future, to stay independant without having to getting into stupid mergers i.e. DaimlerChrysler - losing money and going backrupt in the struggle that is called: 'The road to recovery'!

BMW is planning it's own - wich will be BRIGHT future...I hope for Daimler AND Merc's sake they are doing the same BECUASE F1 would not save any car manufacturer from the current economic climate!

So in the end you may call BMW anything you want...As long as it is BMW and not BMW owned by???? Becuase they did invest in a motorsport (F1) wich future looks VERY bleak anyway!!!!!!

"humiliating" LoL, noway. F1 is a waste of money and second BMW are abandon Highreeving engines so another reason to leave.
Noone care if BMW are leaving, it will be forgotten soon.
Now they can put all those money on roadcars, M3 CSL, 135tii, M1, Z8 and Audi R8 competitor. Yes BMW bring it on

PS there are more carsports than F1

"BMW will appear on the starting grid in the touring car series and young driver promotion program in Formula BMW. This will be supplemented by BMW’s participation in ALMS, the American Le Mans Series, endurance races and close-to-production customer sports. Furthermore, BMW Motorrad Motorsport will continue its campaigns, with the super bike world championship leading the way."

BMW to Exit Formula One at End of 2009 Season

sad but true :t-banghea source: www.press.bmwgroup.com

BMW Press release said:
Resolute Step En Route to Realigning the BMW Group

Munich. The BMW Group will not continue its Formula One campaign after the end of the 2009 season. Resources freed up as a result are to be dedicated to the development of new drive technologies and projects in the field of sustainability. BMW will continue to be actively involved in other motor sports series. The landmark decision to restructure BMW Motorsport’s activities was made at the Board of Management’s meeting yesterday.
“Of course, this was a difficult decision for us. But it’s a resolute step in view of our company's strategic realignment," explained Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “Premium will increasingly be defined in terms of sustainability and environmental compatibility. This is an area in which we want to remain in the lead. In line with our Strategy Number ONE, we are continually reviewing all projects and initiatives to check them for future viability and sustainability. Our Formula One campaign is thus less a key promoter for us. Mario Theissen has been in charge of our motor sports program since 1999. We have scored a large number of successes in this period, including some in Formula One racing. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mario Theissen and his team for this,” said Reithofer.

Dr. Klaus Draeger, the member of the Board of Management responsible for development, said: “It only took us three years to establish ourselves as a top team with the BMW Sauber F1 Team. Unfortunately, we were unable to meet expectations in the current season. Nevertheless, our ten years of Formula One experience have had a major impact on our development engineers. We have racing to thank for numerous technological innovations as well as the competitive spirit that drives us to develop mass-produced cars.” Possible redundancies in Munich and Hinwil cannot be quantified at present. Says Draeger: “Since we only made this decision yesterday, we cannot provide any more precise information. We will develop and assess various scenarios and do our best to find a solution for the employees in Hinwil and the staff members involved in the Formula One project in Munich. We are aware of the responsibility we shoulder and will inform the staff as soon as we can make a clear statement."

Says BMW Motorsport director Dr. Mario Theissen: “Of course, we, the employees in Hinwil and Munich, would all have liked to continue this ambitious campaign and show that this season was just a hiccup following three successful years. But I can understand why this decision was made from a corporate perspective. We will now focus sharply on the remaining races and demonstrate our fighting spirit and put in a good result as we bid farewell to Formula One racing.”

BMW will continue its programs in a number of motor sports series: BMW will appear on the starting grid in the touring car series and young driver promotion program in Formula BMW. This will be supplemented by BMW’s participation in ALMS, the American Le Mans Series, endurance races and close-to-production customer sports. Furthermore, BMW Motorrad Motorsport will continue its campaigns, with the super bike world championship leading the way.

BMW looks back on a long track record of success in the field of motor sports:
BMW achieved eight Formula One victories from 1982 to 1985 with Brabham. In 1983, BMW won the driver’s championship with Nelson Piquet (Brabham BMW). The last win with the legendary turbo engine followed with Benetton in 1986. Ten victories were scored during the partnership with Williams (2000-2005). BMW had a total of 19 grand prix wins and 33 pole positions before the BMW Sauber F1 Team era.

In its debut season in 2006, the newly established BMW Sauber F1 Team wound up fifth in the constructor’s championship. In 2007, the German-Swiss team came in second after McLaren-Mercedes’ exclusion from the points standings. The 2008 season saw the team in the hunt for the world championship until the end of the season, winding up third. Polish-born Robert Kubica achieved the first and hitherto only GP victory in Canada on June 8, 2008. So far, the BMW Sauber F1 Team has taken one pole position (Kubica in Bahrain in 2008) and 16 podium finishes. The BMW Sauber F1 Team occupies the eighth spot in the manufacturer’s standings in the season presently underway.

This is the BEST news that have come out of the company for months . I am really surprised with your reaction people. It is definately time for the Company to focus on motorsport, racing road cars. THAT is what improves the breed

not an F1 involvement or the resurrection of a 4 door 2ton sedan that most of you guys seem to feel so strongly about. Is there anybody on this forum that would actually buy that uber-siebener?

Well, Honda was first so BMW would be the second team but only the first for this season. Anyways, taking what you said in context this is a definite. Isn't it?

Honda was the first indeed. Lets just hope that bmw will not concentrate in building odyssey and jazz rivals...

They will retire from BTCC in 2012 think that front wheel drive becomes mandatory. Do you fancy a front wheel drive 3 series just to compete with a chevy badged daewoo? Do you?

I never liked the BTCC and WTCC tintop series. Contrary to popular belief, they do nothing to improve the breed. The only WTCC element that BMW has ever put into the road-going 3 series is a WTCC-inspired bodykit..................and some WTCC special edition 320i's.

I wished BMW would go back to DTM and go up against Mercedes-Benz and Audi. Let's have some exciting racing!!

People, don't forget it, motor racing is a marketing tool. It provides the buzz around the brand. It's like a BBQ; sell the sizzle, not the steaks!!

Well I highly doubt BMW will start producing mini vans when they have a bazillion SUV/SAV, though the 1er is as small as the Jazz (or close).
