This is a poll to see which sound people prefer. An M135i with the M Performance exhaust or a STOCK M4 Coupe.

I'm well aware it could be seen as not being a fair comparison, as one is stock and the other has been modified. However, the M Performance exhaust is a relatively cheap upgrade (around £1,000 / €1,200 including fitting) and is something which I would add to my M135i should I order one.

Two videos were chosen based on the quality of the video and to be a true reflection of the many different videos I've seen of both models. If anybody has any better videos of the M3/M4 and videos where it sounds better, then I would love people to add them to the thread.

I voted for the M3/M4, even though it lacks the distinctiveness of the previous, N/A ones. In comparison with the M135i with Performance Parts, I believe it sounds more "angry".

It's just my personal preferences, though.

Are you still drunk from last night? :D

I've found another video of the F80 M3. If I'm not mistaken it has Chris Harris at the controls....

I'd say angry vs orgasmic.

Do I still sound drunk?

:D

You'd take an angry woman vs orgasmic one?
Yes, you still sound drunk! :D

PS: Both sounds have their pros and cons. I do agree with Giannis here. He described it very well.
It's a tie for me... at least until I hear the M4 irl.

M4 sounds bloody awful. Like a chainsaw. F@$k! I can only hope it's all about lost in translation. 8 different layers of analogue to digital translation. I thought the M135i sounded shite but yowzers...

Seriously, there's very little to be garnered from YouTube videos in terms of aural quality or acoustic merit.

Both sound synthetic. Not a natural inline6 by any mean. I actually find the sound M135i closer to GT-R V6 somehow (idling only).

Haven't been impressed with any recordings of M3/M4 exhausts so far so M135 I gets my vote.

I have the M Performance exhaust on my car too (I love it) and it's the second mod anyone should make to their M135i. The first being black grills (black car is the exception). Shame I had to wait so long to get one and fit it. So my advice would be to order it and get it fitted with the car Betty.

However I understand BMW may have recently changed suppliers and there are reports these new exhausts are not as good as the original ones but they do offer a choice of tips (chrome or carbon) now.

Yeah, I have been watching that on another forum. Thanks.

Any photos of the carbon tips?

I have heard the M3 at idle, but that doesn't tell you much. I can, however, say that the car looks brilliant in Yas Marina!

The M3 in South African language sounds "KAK" (shite in the British language and shiza in German)!!! So tinny and metallic!! No rasp like the previous M3's. The M135i sounds better, I like the V8 style burble it has.

Betty is that you driving one of those leave blowers!! You need to put a V8 on the back!! Do you use that to dry your hair in the morning? LOL:D:LOL::rolleyes:

Probably the same forum I frequent too. I have the original chrome tips on mine which I prefer but I believe the cf tips look like the same part as the 2er 3er and 4er. Don't think they will slip on my exhaust.

I dislike the sound of both though it's the M4 which sounds dire, I believe BMW took inspiration from this.

The only thing missing is a whiff of smoke like those two-stokes.

I reckon the exhaust will be the first thing most M3/4 owners will change.
