I don't closely follow Tesla, SpaceX, etc., but I've noted some forum member's disdain for Elon... as well as lots of misinformation posted here. I'll
try address some complaints and myths objectively - and non-politically.
Yes, Tesla and SpaceX have received help from the government.
In the case of Tesla they've received:
- A loan to build the Fremont factory - As for the loan, this has been paid back with interest.
- Incentives for the Gigafactory - These are spread out over 20 years and only about 1% of the amount Tesla and Panasonic are investing into building the factory in Nevada.
- Electric car subsidies - The electric car subsidies serve a federally-defined purpose (the electrification of transportation) and are available to any automaker.
- Energy.gov link: Electric Vehicles: Tax Credits and Other Incentives | Department of Energy
As for SpaceX - they're getting NASA contracts now, which means it's actually SpaceX saving the U.S government money, not the other way around. SpaceX rockets are the cheapest and most reliable rockets on the earth right now, and likely so for years to come.
- Reduces the cost of military satellite launches by more than 80%.
- SpaceX's rapid mastery of new technology - reusable rockets imply that it will further reduce government and private sector R&D costs.
Retrospectively - If Elon had never received help, SpaceX and Tesla would have
failed in 2008, as they were nearly bankrupt and federal money was
partly what saved them, in addition to Elon providing all of his remaining Paypal fortune and funding from private investors.
However, the US would have lost it's entire space industry and almost all the automotive industry if it weren't for the government (Ford, technically would've been the lone survivor). ULA, Orbital Sciences, NASA, SpaceX, Tesla, Chrysler, and GM would have gone bankrupt without the bailout and government funding.
Long term - Tesla and SpaceX now have sustainable revenue streams... independent of government.

I'm expecting a rebuttal, but I just want to state some facts, as it's sometimes lacking in these Tesla/SpaceX related threads.
