BMW's powerful 3-liter Twin-Turbo from the 335i is current holder of the International Engine of the Year award, a title the German manufacturer is unlikely to let loose lightly, and with the 2008 awards approaching on May 7th, lets take a look at the contenders for the crown

This year, current holders BMW will have reason to believe they are well placed to win the much coverted award for 4th consecutive year with two extremely strong entries. First up is the mighty 4.0-liter V8 found in the M3 producing 420hp with torque peaking at 400 Nm, and let us not forget the 2-litre twin-turbo diesel, housed in the 123d boasting a power output of 204bhp which is the first all-aluminium diesel engine in the world with more than 100 hp output per litre.

Now is the time for the contenders to come forward and contrary to last years awards which was dominated by German manufacturers, the Japanese will be banging on the title door. The Nissan GT-R has been producing astonishing performance figures which seem to be going against the laws of engineering so we are sure to see a strong challenge from it's 3.8 Twin Turbo pumping out 480hp. Other contenders from the Japanese shores will be Subaru's much respected first-ever diesel and Mitsubishi’s technologically advanced 2-litre turbo from the EVO X.

Not to be left out in the cold, the European and American manfacturers will be looking to get in on the act. Audi brings the twin-turbo 5-litre V10 from the RS6 which packs a monstrous 572bhp, and GM will have high hopes for the 6.2-litre turbo from the Corvette ZR1 and Cadillac CTS-V.

The award is decided by a panel of 65 automotive jounalists from 32 countries and will be announced at the Engine Expo 2008, held in Stuttgart between 6th and 8th of May.

I certainly hope it will.:eusa_pray:D

Re: Will BMW Retain the International Engine of the Year Title?

btw, will that new Mercedes TT diesel be taking part? 500Nm is incredible for a 2liter diesel.

Re: Will BMW Retain the International Engine of the Year Title?

I'm pretty confident that the M3's engine will win for BMW in numerous categories. While I love the GTR, I don't think the engine is the gem of the vehicle.

Re: Will BMW Retain the International Engine of the Year Title?

I would like to see that V10 bi-turbo win such an amazing piece of tech.

In about 12 hours from now (May 7, 2008), the results of the tenth International Engine of the Year Awards will be announced at Engine Expo in Stuttgart, Germany. Being the “car-scoopers” that we are, we already know the winners but we’ll restrain ourselves from spilling the beans as the official announcement is planned for tomorrow afternoon.

Regardless of the official winner, we’d like to ask you which production engine is worth the first prize in your opinion. Is it for example, BMW’s 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged straight six or the M3’s 4.0L V8 or the Nissan GT-R’s twin-turbo 3.8L V6? Maybe you prefer GM’s new 6.2-litre V8 turbo that powers the Corvette ZR1 and Cadillac CTS-V or even Fiat’s punchy 1.4-litre Turbo engine. Perhaps you believe that the Prius’ hybrid synergy drive or Subaru’s new boxer diesel engine is the “one”.

BMW Wins World Engine of the Year Award

BMW has once again played the dominant role at the International Engine of the Year Awards, whose 2008 edition have just been announced. The Munich-based company took the honours six times in what appears a one-sided contest skewed in favour of the blue and white-propeler outfit.

To top it all, the coveted International Engine of the Year was part of the six that BMW scooped. This category was taken by the 3.0-litre twin-turbo for the second time in a row. It beat Volkswagen Group’s 1.4 TSI powerplant almost by a 100 points to the post and BMW was represented no less than four times in the top 8 for this main award. The awards are presided over by a panel of 65 international motoring journalists from 32 countries across the whole world. They serve to recognize engineering excellence in many of the cars that we all love.

In the categories section winners included the VW Group’s 2.0-litre turbo found in such luminaries as the Golf GTI and SEAT Leon Cupra. Subaru won the 2.0-litre to 2.5-litre category with the 2.5 turbo. But a sigh of relief must have gone to Porsche who took the Performance Engine of the Year Award. This was a hotly contested category with engines like Audi’s 5.2-litre V10 twin turbo, Nissan 3.8-litre twin turbo GT-R and two M engines in the V10 and new 4.0-litre V8. In fact, so close was the competition in this regard that the top three nominees – 3.6 Porsche, 5.0 BMW and 4.0 BMW respectively – were separated by a mere four points!
Other prominent engine makers like Ferrari, General Motors, Ford and Mercedes-Benz (especially AMG division) will now have to take serious stock of their wares to catch up to the ever-dominant BMW and Volkswagen.
Here’s the list of the 2008 winners:

6 prices ? Respect but to be honest prices given by journalists aren't very credible to me. :D

the BMW 2.0 diesel engine should have won the greenest engine seens it's more economical that a Prius in the long term.

I expected the Audi's V10 TT to win, possible it didn't make it? what about MB's new 2.1l TT diesel didn't make it? does fuel consumption counts? coz if so i can see why the 6.2l AMG couldn't win!

I´m amazed with result for V10 M5/6 engine..IMO,when it comes to motor technology,BMW is No. 1 no questions asked:bowdown::usa7uh:

Once again a stunning achievement by BMW all round.

MB's new diesel should have won however! Probably wasn't eligible yet.
