Based on that 'one' comparison it does indeed seem that the M5/6 holds all the cards.

It does, and has always done so.

I think I am starting to come to the conclusion that BMW spend more time getting the finer details right compared to the others, maybe this is down to their experience from years of producing M cars which far exceed both Mercedes and Audi, in fact I reckon their approach to this is more in line with that of Porsche. Some may say that BMW produce a better performance engine than the others and I seriously question that based on my own experience but I do now believe that they look at the entire drivetrain and make adjustments to get the most for those engines which is why @Sunny was right and this M6 is outgunned a lighter and more powerful foe.
