Teaser images have been released for the upcoming Citroen DS9, the new flagship version of the French brand’s premium DS range.

The top-of-the-line Citroen DS9 follows on from Citroen’s C6-based Metropolis Concept car shown at the 2010 Shanghai motor show and would join the DS3 city car, and more recent DS4 small car and DS5 mid-sizer.

Where the Metropolis was clearly a sedan, the profile image suggests a possible shooting-brake-style rear end for the Citroen DS9.

The DS9 will clearly be aimed at China, Citroen’s biggest market, and is intended to be part of three China-only cars including a C-segment sedan and an SUV.

It’s not yet clear whether the Citroen DS9 would be sold in other markets.

Citroen’s new DS9 would go head-to-head with luxury limos such as the Audi A8 and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

The Metropolis concept car was shown with a 2.0-litre petrol V6 linked to an electric motor but the DS9’s powerplant is yet to be revealed.

The Citroen DS9 is due to debut at the 2012 Beijing motor show in April.

I know nothing about French cars other than they have some interesting designs. My question is can they design/engineer/build a car on the level with Germany's best at this level?

Funny that... I'll be doing instruction for Citroen this year in addition to my existing commitments. I can't give away too much yet - the program still has to kick off - but from the dry run impressions are more than favourable.
Obviously it's the DS Line that's entrusted with bearing Citroen's desire for aspirational, "halo-type" offerings as a brand builder to supplement their existing, mainstream products. So the higher perceived quality levels, sportier dynamics and more avantgarde styling in the DS Line serve as differentiators from the more conservative main line up. I particulary rate the (thus far unfairly underrated) DS4 crossover. Nice to drive briskly on real-world roads (it's not shabby around a circuit either), rides well, great interior with typically quirky-but-nice features inside and out. ESP can't be fully switched out though. ;)

I will watch Citroen with interest going forward.

Chassis wise, they are more than competent, engines wise, it's improving and there are also the BMW-Daimler-Nissan ties up, interior quality used to be one major weakness but it has improved through the last 5-7 years. and btw i think this ds9 will start where the c6 left and will compete against the E/ 5er and not the S/ 7er.

I wonder what the drivetrain is? The V6 diesel found in the Jaguar XF/XJ in it's highest state of tune, combined with hydraulic suspension of the Citroen C5/C6 would make a pretty fantastic luxury sedan.

I've being wowed by all Citroen's latest designs, especially the DS5 @ JIMS. Attention to detail in the latter's interior gives it flair. That said, spending time looking at the cars IRL and video reviews the styling outside and ergonomic mix inside (DS5) becomes messy and busy IMO the more you look at it. It also becomes too much and overdone. Their designs will not stand the test of time.

Frankly and throw me with a shoe if you want but the same applies to the RR Evoque, I am simply "over" the little crossover's design. I simply guess over-designed NICHE is not for me.:t-hands:

It's like life, boring designs doesn't work yet the same applies to, too much = Balance;) in design is a lasting impression.

Martin, do you get all three French brands in SA? I mean apart from Citroen, are Peugeot and Renault models availiable?

^ Yes absolutely Giannis. SA is like a microcosm of the UK (sans some of their LHD "official" imports and specialist sports cars) market. So yes, you'll see most of what's on sale EXCEPT for Skoda and SEAT. The VW Group decides on what its customers need down here so we're deprived of excellence like the Yeti.

The sad truth is that outside of France this car not matter how good will bomb. While on the subject the Citroen's DS range I really love the DS5, one of the most unique looking cars out there. If only the 5GT had looked this good.

That is simply a hot design. I would drive that. Is that really production?

The design is so radical and avant-garde French. I dig it.

EDIT: Love the color. The rear reminds me of an Alfa Brera. What's with the plastic grille, that I'm not digging so much. Looks like everyone is jumping on the shooting brake/touring/hatchback/wagon bandwagon nowadays.
