This time Chris Harris surprised us with a very sensible comparison test. Sideways action was kept to a bare minimum in this video, but this is possibly his most complete and thorough comparison so far. The two cars in question are the Audi RS6 and the Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake, the two best super wagons on market today.
Summarizing the video, Mr. Harris found the CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake to be more agile, with more steering feel, better exhaust sound, better brake feel, better suspension settings and a much more expensive feeling interior, yet the RS6 comes with the brilliant ZF 8 speed automatic transmission, which with the 4.0 twin turbo V8 results in eyes-opening performance. Chris Harris concludes that the RS6 is objectively a better car, as it puts its power to the road better, it's nearly as much fun to drive as the CLS, yet costs significantly less and it's quite comfortable to drive, in comfort dumpers settings and steel springs. On the other hand, the CLS3 AMG will give its drive a big smile, as it's a car full of character.
On thing we found interesting from CH's video, is these words of his: "In many ways the success of the RS6 perfectly describes the dichotomy between a road test assessment of the car and what people actually want to live with. In the magazine test, four wheel drive means stars deducted for understeer. In the real world it means safety and traction in the wet. Turbocharging means a hammering for poor throttle response from your average journalist, but massive power gains for the owner if they bend the rules".
In any case, the video after the jump is a must-watch!
