On the Road
I am new to this forum so hopefully I get it right.. thanks for the welcome.
I have a 2007 m272 w203 2.5l with 60 k miles and a wore out counter balance shaft, very early in life they say but with a 10yr / 100k mile warranty that was scoffed at by MB Germany, MB Reno. So I did the exchange per MB guidelines ( haha) and it turned out very clean and running snappy just like it always did...After an hour or so into the oil changes x2 and oil cleaning according to MB a slight Click-Click began on the dvr side front , next to the P/S , oil cooler, VVT's. Sounds like a sm block chev v8 tappet click click. but you can't get the valve cover off to touch it...
I learned that the oil pressure is pulsing at the same rate as the click ( once a rev) up until 2k rpm then... all is quite ( oil is 60 +)and normal.... mind you there is NO codes either .... idling back down the click-click resumes... sometimes softer and after warming up also still there ....
Any Ideas on the VVT not holding oil and or the bolt (valve) leaking ... you can hear this click with a scope, or stick very clearly right at the 2 VVT's

your time and consideration is appreciated. - Dennis

Is it possible that you have hydraulic valve tappets and some of them are worn out? Or you might have a leak at the VVT mechanism and you have low oil pressure there, resulting in a less than ideal valve timing, thus the clicking noise. At least that was the case with my car.

Thank you for your response... There seems to be no way to say it the VVT adjuster or the valve (bolt). On this engine you cant even monitor the oil pressure... "common man ". On this m272 just below the water pump is an oil outlet that you can temp. put a gauge in to see what the pressure is. but you have to remove the serp. belt cause it could rip the gauge wire or hose off, so the test is just a quick test... that test showed oil pressure 10-60+ lbs. pulsing and the same rate as the clicking up until 2k rpm then turned into 60 lb. continuous.... and quiet , So I think what you have said sounds like my issue also.

Do you know anyone with and OIL gauge in the car or on the Dash ?
Did they replace both on your car ? VVT (adj.)and Bolt (valve)

Thank you --- Dennis

Have you tried a specialist MB garage?
Tried Reno Nevada MB with extreme dis satisfaction ( run around ) in my view....
when this whole thing started , due to the counterbalance shaft , it was under warranty and MB Reno started to say they would cover it but then want to know all about our oil changes which they figured we did NOT do ,,, well they were all done ...At this point they said you are 30 days beyond the 10 year warranty. Well ,what? we never new there was a 10 year / 100k mile warranty for that specific part tracked on to the original warranty.... NOBoDY said anything...Also come to find out there was a Calif. Class action lemon law which we were never informed of either .... really a big waste .... and now bottom line is I did all of the required changes to the car and it responds perfectly to all the German spec's for the C/B Shaft changes and cleanup...
I don't trust Reno MB cause every time I have been in to there shop for a diagnose it 3-5k $$$ ... they will not take an honest look at a problem and give you an honest answer... I really feel sorry for there mech/tech's...
That's why I am here ... I am a very good wrench... the problem is finding the tools to test and or info on how things work. Image this ,,, there is no oil pressure gauge in this car , much less where could you add one? Since oil is so very important why cant you find out what MB does with or w/o it .... not much said in the MB books
I have looked for information ever since we purchased ... and it seems a very slow process to get thru the weeds..
Sorry about the venting .. I really do appreciate the info from all .

I will solve this and will gladly help anyone with a similar issue(s) it is a great feeling when you see the lights come on in someone elses eyes from your help.

Thanks again ----Dennis

I totally understand you. Sadly, my knowledge only goes so far. I hope somebody who knows more sees this one. In any case, good luck!
