Vs C&D: 2009 BMW 750Li vs. 2009 Mercedes-Benz S550

Vehicle comparisons, matchups, debates, performance battles, and head-to-head discussions.
Russian no.1 car magazine Autoreview did comparison test too...

BMW 750Li, Lexus LS 600h L è Mercedes-Benz S 500 L

They compared 750LI, S500L and Lexus LS600.
Very interesting...

BMW and Mercedes scored same amount of points, but BMW has better passenger seats and better saloon. Everything else (handling, comfort, driving comfort, brakes is better on Mercedes). But their S500 had ABC..
Jornalists clearly liked Merc more..

If anyone interested you can translate it with Google translate, crappy translation, but better than nothing.

Dealer told me that Mercedes' facelifted S-Class debut next month with a 10-speed gearbox co-developed with Schwinn.

So the Mercedes won? Please tell me the Lexus placed last!

Haha, from the Russian test. BMW 750i used less fuel than the Benz.

Consumption of fuel, [l]/100 km (bmw, lexus, MB)
the urban cycle: 16,4 11,3 17,5
the out-of-town cycle: 8,5 8,0 8,6
the mixed cycle: 11,4 9,3 11,8

:eusa_danc:D

Other than that, not much love for the 7-series in this test :(

Russia loves S class..no news there:)

You see there was a reason for BMW to pull off that hour glass crap in moscow;)

Then what is the point? Why don't you actually read the test before offering up guesswork.

Come to think of it, this argument doesn't hold water either because if anything trying to keep up with the BMW in the Benz in the corners should have made the 5.5L V8 in the Benz really drink some fuel in doing so since the Benz's chassis isn't as willing to play.

I actually read the article in its entirety.
I wasn't trying to make a point, if I were, I would have been more assertive with my choice of words. My comments were purely anecdotal based on the last paragraph in the second page.

I think we are taking this too serious...:t-cheers:

And I just heard from a Lexus insider that the next LS will come with a 30 speed gear box developed in relationship with Trek...;)

This is not to poke fun at you Merc1, but just to show that the gear madness going on at all three of these companies is getting a bit out of hand...

Well either way it doesn't wash so its really matterless.

True, but the "goods" are razor thin. Just between 1-3 tenths of a second in all the acceleration tests. I actually expected the BMW to be a little bit faster than that. I'm sure a 750i would.

Oh yeah I did to but remember the 7er is 140lbs more than the S500
which isnt much. I expected more though. Great post Merc1.

Oh, btw I didn`t know the 750iL wheelbase has grown some 3-inches over the previous model, Thats significant growth!!:eek2:
It`s no wonder thay odopted 4-wheel steering!

Mercedes might follow suit with the new S-Class.

Yes the new 7 is a big one......I'm still torn over the car though. I love just about everything except the front end in certain colors. Right now if forced I'd have to get one over the S since the S is getting a facelift in a few months.

I like it to Merc1.... but you have to admit that the S-Class has stepped it up in the performance and quality departments more so than any S-Class in history. As I said before the 7er isn`t two-folds better in overall performance. Tie the performance of the S-Class with it`s quality reports and world-wide (with in the first quarter of it`s intro which the 7er has yet to recieve) awards and still I believe you have Germanys best excutive luxury car. The face/lift will make the best even better. Id go for the S-Class. The BMW would be my second choice.

Oh wait, the new A8 isn`t that far away. It will also be a remarkable machine.

Oh yes...each Mercedes when redone gets better and better at ride/handling. I still think the S-Class is the superior car for the market segment and anything besides a back road handling test bears this out. Most buyers aren't going to be flinging this cars, but I can respect the BMW for being so comfortable and having a handling edge.

Yes the new A8 will need to be a stunning machine as will the new Jaguar XJ. The A8 in particular, designwise needs to be a knockout to top the current car. The spy pics don't look promising at this point.

The new 7-series is much better than previous generation. The new 7er is sportier, having a driver oriented dashboard, just like the old 7-series. Also this time bmw succeed to make the new 7-series good looking, outside and inside.
I don't think previous 7-series won many reviews against S-class but this time, the new 7 is on a winning strike. BMW has done a better homework this time. The new 7-series is more competitive than ever.

Yes Just_me I agree with that and I`m not playing it safe my friend.
You see I already pointed out that the newer car always has a few advantages over the existing compeditors and thats a given. Congrats to BMW for a well engineered 7er.

You can bet though when the next S-Class comes out Mercedes will again out do itself and it`s compeditors.

And there really wasn't anything wrong with the way the old 7 drove, it was the look/styling and ergonomics that hindered it. I drove it several times and liked it, but to have 9 different buttons to adjust the seat was just overkill. Complication just for the sake of doing so...something that characterized the whole car for a lot of auto writers and buyers alike.

The new 7's interior devine. The seats are amazing and they're simple as pie to adjust.

...and BMW and Audi will still be alive and still give the S-class a hard time.
S-class is like BMW 3-series. BMW 3-series always seem to be slightly ahead of the competition just like S-class is. Its a close call for all cars but there can only be one...

^^^^^^^^^ Correct.

BMW lower, Mercedes upper....has been that way as long as I've been paying attention to cars.

This is why IMO Audi never found its niche here in the U.S.
