S-Class W116 Buying MB w116 450SEL, maybe 6.9?

The Mercedes-Benz W116 is a series of flagship luxury sedans produced from September 1972 until 1980. The W116 automobiles were the first Mercedes-Benz models to be officially called S-Class, although some earlier sedan models had already been designated unofficially with the letter S for "special class" (German: "Sonderklasse"). The W116 was selected as European Car of the Year in 1974.
As I look at those pics of the SLC I'm amazed at how big Mercedes' steering wheels where. My god they look like they could have come off of any one of the buses they make.

A 1988 W126 300SE I found. Look at how big that wheel is!!!

Anyway I'm thinking we should have a vintage/classic Benz thread where members can discuss older Mercedes and post pics of the ones they might or want to purchase. Sounds like it would be fun thread to me.

The old Mercedes steering wheels were always great :)

You could always pretend you were driving an old racer -- like the Targa Florio:

Only thing was a siren-like noise from the rear axle or differential. This noise only appeared from 20km/h I think, and only when I used the throttle. But I don't throttle, the noise disappears completely.

Congrats to your brand new used car! :)

Two (probably) interesting links - they're in German but you can translate them via Babelfish:

W116 FAQ
Reparatur Hinterachsmittelstueck

Content of the second link (I think you understand German?):

Well guys, it's decided, I'm gonna sign the papers and take delivery of my new Benz on the 28th of this month... I'm sooo happy...:icondrool:icondrool:usa7uh:

As soon as i have it, I'll open a new thread about it to show you my SLC in its full glory... and post my impressions after having driven it... :usa7uh:

Of course my petrol consumption too, this is gonna change from my diesel Golf...:D

Thanks for the links Pekka, I'll study them closely. And Christian, I totally assume my new PIMPMOBILE!

Can't wait to finally have it in front of me...Guys i'm so excited!!

The steering can be fixed really quick, as long as the guy knows what he is doing. The steering gear box is adjustable, so all the play can be removed, by loosening a nut and adjusting a scew. Though if it is adjusted the box might start to leak, if it is not already. Many do not like to reseal the gear box, pain in the ass.

On the passenger side under the hood near the firewall there is a big mushroom looking thing with a lot of hoses going to it. This is for the climate control, if it leaks and goes bad it is very expensive $2500+. There are aftermarket kits that are much cheaper and bypass it, but still operate the same.

The noise from the rear axle, don't know what it is. My 190E has a similar noise if driving with part throttle, goes away when lifting off the gas. Could be from the rear axle, could be something else. If you find out...

Check out the suspension, including the motor and trans mounts. Rubber does go bad, but is simple to replace.

I didn't sold the Golf yet, will do it in September (right now everybody is in vacation, bad time to sell anything), my parents will help me out in the meantime...:usa7uh:
(BTW it is Amaury, with y at the end :D).

Mant thanks Gullwing for these infos!

I think I'll let the steering as it is, because apart from the play it works smoothly and regularly. It won't hurt if I don't adjust it, will it? However I didn't knew it was easy to fix!

For the climate control, well, honestly if the air conditionner doesn't work I will not invest a lot to repair it. As long as the heater and ventilation are allright... I can open the sunroof.:eusa_danc

For the rear axle/differential noise, however, I'll check it to know what it is. Will let you know if I find out. I want my car to work perfectly from a mechanical PoV, however things like the A/C are not my first priority!

What I will do is a trip to a garage to remove all the rust and protect the car.

I am so pleased to at last own such a spendid Mercedes... I always loved the SLC, for its rally history, its rarity, its special look... I love it I love it I love it!! Feels more special than a C126.

Steering is easy to fix, as long as they know what they are doing. The first on I adjusted, I was warned not to adjust it more then one full turn. After three full turns the steering was great. Once I took apart the gear box on another car I saw what was inside and found I was ok in my adjustments since the adjusting screw can be turned probably 20 times. The screw just adjusts the clearance between the two gears, too tight and steering is very hard, too loose and ahhhh tree!
I think to actually get to the screw the box needs to be removed (easy), but if the three bolts holding the box to the car are removed the box can be slid down just enough to get to the screw through the exhaust manifold, allowing for quicker checks of the adjustments.
It shouldn't hurt if it is not adjusted, but might allow for a more enjoyable driving experiance. Find someone who actually knows more about these cars and talk to him. Some will jump at the chance to work on it, some will run away.

The mushroom doesn't affect the A/C working, it deals more with the flow of coolant and the operation of vent flaps.

If the engine cranks over for several seconds before firing up, little know secret... It is just a check valve back at the fuel filter. Many people have spent $$$$ to fix this problem only to find it is just a $ part.
