Bugatti 16C Galibier Concept

Bugatti Galibier 16C May Yet See Production

First unveiled last fall merely as a design concept, to be shopped around to potential buyers to gauge interest, the Bugatti Galibier 16C was quickly rumored to be on the fast-track to production. Six months have intervened without any official word on the car, however, leaving its future in doubt. The latest reports say the game is back on, however, thanks to very positive impressions of the bombastically elegant sedan--though parent company the Volkswagen Group's financial situation may make us wait a few months to find out for sure.

According to reports from insiders at the company, the Galibier 16C will be built, but it will have to wait for official confirmation until the VW Group can raise funds it is currently seeking from investors. Revealing plans for the extravagant--and not likely profitable, despite the halo image and stratospheric price--Galbier could derail the confidence of investors. But unlike the investment banker, the enthusiast cares only for the car's exquisite provenance and prodigious capability.

The newest rumors give life to the photos released last week, which show off the car's details, particularly the interior, more completely than ever before. With an two-stage supercharged 800-horsepower W-16 engine, a price tag expected to range around $1.5 million, and what is likely a mid-sized herd of fantastically pampered cattle inside, the Galibier isn't the frenetic speed-runner the Veyron was, but it's every bit as exclusive.

Bugatti is also throwing the technological textbook at the car, including an advanced active suspension system, aluminum and carbon fiber bodywork, and the latest in cutting-edge driving aids to help extract maximum performance while maintaining maximum safety.

It's not all new-school, however. There's a definite Old World aspect to the custom Swiss Reverso Tourbillon clock by Parmigiani--which can be removed and worn on the wrist with a custom-designed leather strap.

We expect to see, and hear, more of the Galibier 16C before the end of summer

AutoWeek is reporting that the Bugatti 16C Galibier concept is going into production, and the ultralux bruiser will arrive in 2013. There remains 40 examples of the Veyron scheduled to be built, but when that is finished, AW says the Galibier will be prepped for a run of 300 units.

Instead of four turbochargers, though, the sedan will employ two superchargers affixed to the W16 engine and throw down something in the neighborhood of 800 horsepower. And compared to the super-duper coupe that got this whole thing (re)started,
Might want to place an order for a bigger piggy bank...

it'll be something of a bargain: just $1.5 million.:D

I hope they pretty it up a little, especially the rear end before production. Other than that, every other 4-door car in the world will be rendered obsolete when this thing arrives.

If Mercedes has anything really hot planned for Maybach this is the car they need to strive to beat. They're the only ones that could do it. VW isn't going to allow Bentley to do it. BMW isn't going to spend the money on a Rolls to do it, nor should they since a Rolls isn't a sporty type car. That just leaves Mercedes/Maybach. All they need now is the money and the vision.

I love it now. Maybe it's the resemblance to the beautiful Bugatti 57SC Atlantic from some angles.

When your paying this kind of bread for a car your going to expect the a design language to be out of this world in more ways than a few. I like it, it`s very unique.

I love it! Can't wait to see the production version. Already looking to be my new favorite car.

Bugatti Planning Audi A8-Based Sedan, No More Sports Cars

The Bugatti Galibier was first introduced in September of 2009 and while it has already reportedly been given the green-light several times, Germany’s Der Spiegel has just announced an additional confirmation. In an interview with company execs, Der Spiegel reports that a new model is in the works, based on the Audi A8 platform. It’s unlikely that the ultra-exotic brand is working on more than one model at a time and so the obvious conclusion is that this is the Galibier.

For power, the Galibier reportedly uses a version of the Veyron’s 8.0-liter W16 engine, but with a pair of superchargers rather than the quad-turbo setup. It also gets an eight-speed automatic rather than the Veyron’s seven-seed DSG box.

While the Veyron is due to be retired soon, one revelation out of the interview is that the Volkswagen board has made the call to cease all sports car development for the Bugatti brand, limiting it strictly to sedans.

Holy sh**. I can't tell if I think it's ugly or brilliant. I guess that's a good thing for a $2 Million Car.

I LOVE the very authentic and almost mystical throwback approach, with future-modern mixing. In this day and age, with everything being done a hundred times over already, rich heritage is the the most epic way of expressing power in the car world, IMO. And this Bugatti has it in droves.

What I don't like is the ugly Panamera puffy hatchback a$$, which doesn't belong on a $60K car, much less a Million plus Dollar one.

Also, I've never loved the current 2-Door Bugatti, just does nothing for me really. THIS is the Bugatti that finally has me seeing it in the way a Bugatti is supposed to be seen.

I always felt that what BMW did with the Rolls Royce in taking a clean sheet of paper and producting a collection of cars so elegant and in keeping with it's heritage would be hard to beat but on this occasion I think they have been surpassed.

Mind you trying to balance such a huge and heavy engine up front and getting it to handle remotely decently might be as big a challenge as the developing the Veyron in the first place.

P.S.
Definitely not ugly. :0vr:

I guess I have a new next car! LOL.

If a car that costs more than what most people will make in their entire lifetime doesn't either inspire you matchlessly, or make you feel like a pile of dung, I don't know what will!

It certainly leaves me quite surprised that Bugattis' new sedan will reportedly be based on Audis' A8 underpinnings. I would have thought a modified Panamera platform.

Maybe they wanted to use alloy in it's main construction. It will be interesting to see which drivetrain is used, I'm guessing that with probably 800hp they will wish to retain awd like the Veyron but obviously it won't be the same design. Is it possible they perceptive Audi quattro system as the more refined of the two. :t-hands:

Bugatti can based it off of Audi, Porsche, VW or Lambo. I could care less. As long as the finish product is the most powerful sedan on earth, I will be happy. Just need to work on the down payment. :D

Well, according to footie, the A8 and the Panamera share the same platform.
