X5 M / X6 M BMW X6 M Explodes Into Fire While Being Driven

The X5 M is the high-performance variant of the X5. In April 2009, the X6 M version was announced, with a 408 kW (547 hp) version of the BMW S63 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. The BMW X5 M and X6 M are the first vehicles from BMW M GmbH to have xDrive all-wheel-drive system and automatic transmissions, and are also crossovers as opposed to passenger cars.

UFC legend Randy Couture is thanking his lucky stars -- because his manager narrowly dodged a gruesome death this month in L.A. ... when his BMW spontaneously burst into flames .... and TMZ has video of the fiery inferno.

Randy's manager Sam Spira tells TMZ, he was driving to a friend's house several days ago when "without any warning, my BMW X6M burst into flames, exploded and was completely totaled."

Sam says, "I can best describe the event as a very loud bang while going about 10 miles an hour -- there was a speed bump that I slowed down for -- followed by an immediate giant engine malfunction light and flames coming out from the front and under the car."

And if that wasn't scary enough, Sam says his young daughter was in the passenger seat -- and the passenger door wouldn't open. So Sam had to grab his daughter and pull her out the driver's side, burning himself in the process.

Seconds later, Sam says the car exploded and was immediately engulfed in flames. Spira adds, "Had we been traveling on the freeway, we would probably all be dead."

Firefighters arrived to the scene moments later to extinguish the blaze.

ferrari engineers are proud of you bmw, you made it to the next level with that explosion tho

I'm gald they are ok. I find this very worrisome. Well, that is the first case, but anyway. The car better be shipped to BMW and get inspected.

But what about Ferrari? Nobody complains? As self accelerating, non functioning brakes, rust and catching fire are unacceptable. Not only can they damamge the occupants, but also other people in the environment.

If his X6 M was modded then we'll never know the cause. BMW will keep it secret, if the reason are not the mods, again if there are any. But knowing how many modded cars there are in UAE, and no such cased, I doubt it is tuning.

I wonder if the car was modded or stock as well.

Lots of weird quality problems coming from BMW lately, regardless. They need to spend less time focusing on maximizing profit measures and more on employing stringent quality control measures.

So, that means I'l have to get a Sparco flame resistant racing suit and some beefy fire extinguishers ASAP!

Holy crap! I didn't even read the bottom part where he said his daughter couldn't get out of the passenger side because the door wouldn't open, so he had to pull her out of the drivers side which got him burned.

It frightens me to say it, but BMW's starting to reek of early 2000's M-B these days.

Nope. Just make sure you have firefighters following you wherever you go, you know just like bodyguards? Or do the sensible thing and trade for a Cayenne Turbo S.

BMW Recalls 32,000 High-Horsepower Models for Fire Hazard
By CHRISTOPHER JENSEN

BMW is recalling 32,000 of its most powerful vehicles because of a fire hazard, the automaker has informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The affected models, all from the 2008-11 model years, are the 5 Series, 5 Series Gran Turismo, 7 Series, X5 and X6 equipped with turbocharged 8- or 12-cylinder engines, according to a Oct. 20 letter, which was posted on the agency’s Web site over the weekend.
BMW said the problem related to an auxiliary water pump that helped to cool the turbocharger. An electronic circuit board could fail and, “in an extreme case,” lead to the “smoldering of the water pump.”
The automaker told the safety agency that in most cases, the driver would get a warning on the instrument panel of the problem. But BMW said there were two cases of fires in the engine compartment among 102 cases of pump failures worldwide. The automaker said it was not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the defect.
BMW described the recall as voluntary, but under federal law, once a manufacturer was aware of a safety defect it must inform the agency of plans for a recall within five days or face civil penalties

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
