X5 [Official] BMW X5 (F15)

The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions.
MT reports 170 lb. savings for the 35i and 230 lb. savings for the 50i.

Yes, when cars with same features are compared - but F15 features more stuff as standard therefore it's a bit heavier than without them. To make a real comparison you have to equip E70 with some optional features, and then compare the weight of that E70 vehicle, not the standard one: and then the F15's claimed weight advantage comes to light.

LOL. What's going on in MB and BMW these days choosing the funniest guys to introduce their "great" new cars :D

"The veHEEck'l"...
"Lightweight overall feeling" - that's not what I see and not the direction Eni told us BMW took...
The first guy should not be shown to the public ever again!
...."it's about L-shape taillights"... !? What's about L-shape taillights? Or you are just talking shit to make the video a bit longer?

He explains how they made the front so aggressive and so on... then he adds:
..."by integrating the headlights into the kidney grill"... then makes the same facial expression Christopher Columbus did when he found "India"...

PS: People and their dumbness these days is what makes companies think they can talk and sell shiz... and they are right... it works!...

Makes sense, thanks for the explanation.

On another note completely, the wallpapers in EnI's post #104 in this thread all have South African scenery backdrops. The ones with the Drakensberg in the background are particularly scenic. Then there're your typical Cape Town / Camps Bay / Hout Bay shots for the larnies...

Read further. ;)

Are the front and rear axle assy. carry-overs from the E70?

Edit: In terms of styling then, the X1 was the forebearer of the theme and is today in the year 2013 perfectly in-line with the X-Family, even if it's the oldest member in production since the F15's offficial showing (IMO);)

My X1 & Martinbo's Subaru:)

1) will be multi-functional instrument panel an option?
2) when the new engine for 35i release? N56?
3) when info about hybrid will be release?
4) will be alcantara headline available?
5) any info about pedestrian airbag?

I think BMW should to do photos and wallpapers of the new X5 with bigger wheels. These looks tiny.

I guess that I have to admit it and teach what I preach:rolleyes:

Typical, succesful design is one that matures as time pass. few hours later and BMW did what they 9/10 times do, polarize opinions and in the end come to market with designs that matures into brilliant with time....

The F15 is evolutionary yes, but is just that ^. Growing on me by the hour and will in comparison to the competition outshinen them all on looks. What's that you say!!? I tell you, guarantee you it will;)

See I am sold on the Cayenne but lets face it, do you get a more uglier rear than the Korean copy+paste weak ass of a Cayenne? IMO - Nope!

F15 has Da Nose(y) Da correct creases(y) Da odd-ass yet MUCH better than Cayenne's .

Last but not least, pretty:love: - serves me not good in metal, only in flesh;) Pretty RR-Sport, too pretty for testosterone filled, metrosexual me.

Are the front and rear axle assy. carry-overs from the E70?

Front axle:
E70: Double-wishbone axle, small steering roll radius, anti-dive
F15: Double track control arm with double joint principle, small (negative) steering roll radius, anti-dive

Rear axle:
E70: Integral-IV multi-arm axle, anti-squat and anti-dive, optional air suspension with automatic self-levelling
F15: Integral-IV rear axle, spatial suspension with anti-squat and anti-dive, optional air suspension with automatic self-levelling

So, yes, to me they sound the same. :cautious:

Undeniable sense of general disappointment about this vehicle, but I think it reflects the maturity of the X5, and BMW fast becoming a global mass producer, no longer a niche German player.

The new X5 disappoints because it's bland, and no longer typically German premium.

The X5 is now an American market product. The European SUV/offroader market has moved down to X3/X1 level, with products like the Opel Mokka and even BMW's own MINI Countryman setting the tone.

The America-aimed X5 is under attack from cheaper products like the Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee. SUVs are now bought more for interior space, high-driving position, and perceived safety for mothers and children occupants, than for off-roading ability. In America they are the descendants of the station wagons of the 70s and people carriers like the Chrysler Voyager of the 80s.

So BMW has shifted the focus of the 3rd Gen X5 to more space, 7-seat option, fuel economy akin to mid-size sedans, and a 2WD option to acknowledge that most of these vehicles never go off the highway.

As a result of the re-focusing, to bring down the entry price, give it more interior space, family sedan-like fuel economy, explicitly acknowledge that cars like these are increasingly people carriers rather than soft-roaders, by offering a 2WD option, enthusiasts like us baulk at the result. The effect is akin to the American Passat replacing the more expensive, European Passat.

It will not be liked by us and many others will say it's a backward step, but it will help BMW to maintain and increase the around 100k annual sales, by fending off the threat of the Explorer, Grand Cherokee and the like, while allowing BMW to move the next X6, possible range-topping X7 into a more exclusive niche, like they will do with the X4 to the mass-market X3.

BMW is planning for the long term. Products like the new R/R Sport may initially catch the eye of enthusiasts, but by providing lower entry prices, more room, more safety and convenience features, and near 2WD sedan like fuel economy levels, real potential buyers, unlike bewailing enthusiasts, will be won over.

Kilcrohane, notwithstanding your disdain for JLR (I also have my frustrations with the product), the RR Sport will steal significant sales from this product. Regardless of long term strategy, this interior and certain aspects of the exterior design are not current business class standard. The new RR Sport and current Cayenne are far more special. Consumers are not privy to the marginal weaknesses of JLR products and will seriously consider the RR Sport instead of this bland, blown up 3 series. I don't care how well it sells, it is a poor effort.

Apart from being a bit lower & a tad longer (longer front overhang due to EU pedestrian safety regulation) the dimension are the same (track, wheelbase etc). Same good old platform. :D

This has surprised me because I got the impression they were playing the 7 seater card on this latest version but clear like the last one it remains squarely as an afterthought. That said I doubt too many people that even buy proper 7 seater SUVs ever really use them regularly so maybe BMW have done the research and felt keeping it more of a drivers tool was more important.

Merc1, when it is a BMW, it is ok to use the same platform for two generations? Funny how you didn't notice it had the same front and door windows as the E70.

This "new" X5 is more a huge facelift (aka E Class W212). Never seen such huge cost reduction on premium product. This car is not worth the price the previous X5 generation which IMO really were best in class. Next generation Q7 will blow this X5 out of the water, in to the space, not to talk about the next Touareg/Cayenne.

If this is an indication for the next generation 7 Series, Mercedes, Audi and even Lexus have nothing to worry about.

As I say, the M2 and M4 will be the only true BMWs to consider buying (eventually M6 GC), all the rest is crap. Your better looks elsewhere.

^^Levi, I can't say whether your opinion is right or wrong but I honestly don't know how you can make such a swiping statement. For one you don't know whether this new X5 drives the same as the car it replaces and neither do you know how well the next Q7/Cayenne/Touareg will drive, though I do agree if the weight savings Audi is claiming is true it should make a serious impact on how it feels in the corners and with directional changes.

Ahh - those were good times... :) Thanks for the reminder Naas - how you managed to sneak that OT into this thread is remarkable. :D

Oh and Deckhook - stuff you man! :D
