I could be wrong but I don't think that flying a zero emission car around the world and unveiling it on a airplane is an effective way to showcase a car whose purpose is to reduce carbon emissions. This strategy might make more sense for a high-end supercar which is being showcased to elite petrolheads behind closed doors. A zero emission yacht would have made more sense. Nor is an airport a nice place to visit for a preview.

Driven by chauffeur in The 7 to the hanger through the main gates.
Security including metal detectors and of course surrendering your phone before boarding the plane to see the car. No queuing which you normally experience in the terminal. Think of entering the airline premium lounge.

You're way overthinking it, don't you think?

We still don't have viable other options to transport things around the globe in a carbon dioxide free way. Being that by air or by the sea. No electric cargo ships. No electric cargo planes.

What do you think other carmakers are doing with their BEVs when presenting them on autoshows around the globe? Teleporting them from one place to another? No, they don't. They use planes. Running on kerozine. Or when organising media drive events. Vehicles have to be moved to a certain place. By an ICE plane, an ICE ship or an ICE truck. Even mighty Tesla is doing that.

What's different in this iNext case is that BMW is doing it in a very concentrated, condense time frame: in 5 days rather in 5 months. And making a fuss about it. They are picking places where a vehicle won't be presented at autoshows but are still very important markets so the car has to be shown to the local VIPs and the local media.

Also - isn't it better to show it on the plane directly at the airport than hauling it then to other event places by truck?

And all boring nitpicking aside, what is so revolutionnaru about this concept ? AD capabilities ? Batteries ? 5G ?

I like it ... as a concept car. There are things I don’t like about it, like all concept cars. I’m not sure I’ll ever warm up to the evolution/devolution of the double kidney. The double kidney was a design which allowed cooling. This, this is ... decoration. Give it a meaningful function (hey like cooling the batteries) and it starts to make sense to me. I am a bit of a form follows function guy. Just me.

The real problem I have with this is it still looks like a concept car, like there is a lot more gestation to be had. Tesla showed a concept car that looked close to reality and then delivered on that reality. Granted, there were, and still are hiccups. But they delivered.

And it’s why I sold my beloved 328i and now have a Tesla Model 3 RWD. I simply couldn’t wait any longer, and with my real life daily range needs, an i3 of any current flavor wouldn’t work. And I have to tell you - it drives and handles like a BMW. A true scalpel on the road.

But then there are the things I worry about; beta quality issues (mine’s more like an Alpha considering build date), and the truly terrible, I mean truly terrible, delivery experience. But then I drive it and i’m Like WOW, I’m not sure I could ever go back to ICE. That response truly surprised me.

I really wanted a BMW, they just didn’t have what I needed. Tesla did. And as of this week i’m saving $22 day just in fuel cost from the grid. And I’m having fun doing it.

So my point is, BMW and others need to stop concepting and start delivering. And quickly. Enough with the concepts in the traditional sense. Show me something 90% baked, make me believe in the future, and make me put my money where my mouth is to reduce manufacturer risk. This doesn’t do it, it simply doesn’t. Mercedes tepid attempt, the EQC whatever, doesn’t do it for me either.

In 3-4 years when I’ve put 90-120k miles (yes that’s how much i’m driving) on my Model 3, I really hope BMW has something compelling for me. In fact I hope BMW has something so, so compelling for me in 2 years that I sign up putting my money where my mouth is. Just like Tesla.

Work harder and faster BMW. Please. You’re being passed by after being a true leader.
