This Hyundai is a nice idea, and a very correct showcase where BMW is heading with V5. A huge hatch.

Like Hyundai Talus was a good showcase of SAC (X6) idea.

I'm curious if some ex-BMW designer went from BMW to Hyundai European design centre recently ...


Btw, V5 is already being tested - under 5er mule. It will hit the roads with its original body design (yet with heavy plastic cladding) in December.

Not too sure about the RFK though. It might hurt X5 sales IMO.

More 5er touring than X5.

I don't know. 5'r touring is more different, from what I've been hearing, from the RFK than X5 is. It's like the R and ML, although there are propably even more simular than the RFK and X5. I hope it doesn't turn out to be a flop like the R. But I expect some influence on sales of the X5.

If the R-Class is flopping, then there will very likely not be a market for this potential BMW.

I remember reading about a BMW official talking about the market for this type of vehicle and how cnosumers just need to be educated about that segment and warm up to it, and it will be a lucrative segment for them.

If the R-Class is flopping, then there will very likely not be a market for this potential BMW.

Not really, because for now it looks like BMW WILL offer something new, and not just call it new like MB did with the R.

Good point, but these luxury markets are becoming saturated with products that nobody wants or needs. People don't need an R-Class, yet MB still made one. Will people need this? The X3 seems to be loosing its appeal, despite the facelift.

i think there will alwys be a market for an X3, even if it subsides a bit after hype
as for RFK, it is a dangerous offering in the fullest sense of the word, same for the X6
they have to be radical enough to appeal to new buyers, yet not too radical to seem out of context and flop
but at the same time, if they are just a fresh tke ona new concept (R class) then the argument for market saturation applies

well, I've heard this more often: "X3 losing it's appeal, not really a succes, ..."
tell me, how many cars does it have to sell before people see it as the major succes it is. This car was nr1 SUV in germany for months in a row, beating bigger and cheaper cars. And in the rest of the world stayed almost everywhere in a top place. It's a bit down for now, but FL are just now hitting the showrooms. It still remians a big seller.

As for the X6, I don't think it was ever intentionned to be a high volume seller, the R was/is.

Although, that was what they also thought about the X3, and look how that turned out. But for now, the intention of the X6 is a small niche-car on which BMW can go totally nuts. I love it.

As said in another thread, or was it this, it's more the RFK that worries me about really hitting homerun. More conventional in the BMW line up and bigger competition within.

Do not think of the RFK competing directly with the R-Klasse , when BMW's management board saw both the RFK and the R-Klasse standing nose to nose in a viewing studio. They came round to BMW design chief's more realistic approach that the RFK and the X6 will create a new segment .

For which? you may ask especially with the R-Klasse ? well BMW do not see the car as direct challenger , when you see the R-Klasse and the RFK you leave with the impression that the R-Klasse looks like a van with windows or a mini-bus . Whilst the brief was to create a segment in the luxury sector to target discontented SUV and Mini-Van owners with the R-Klasse , BMW have gone the different road - Not concentrating on Space and function so much as the R-klasse displays But mainly on the dynamics , refinement and comfort
I have seen the film of the prototype negotiate BMW's test track - this thing can move. it will be a luxury cruiser but BMW still maintain the ideals that it will handle and perform like a car , The overall shape which has already been leaked through the auto media shows the design approach to make a different class of vehicle - a sleek , muscular and a dynamic talking point. - A Mobile communication statement.
With the X6 and the RFK. @ BMW The excitement is building...

True. X6 SAC & V5 LSC are to be niche vehicles. And therefore "mobile communication statements". Like CLS is for MB. Something to stand out of the model line. A trend-setter.

Imagine X6 as a child of X5 & 6er. An all-purpose coupe. Something new, cool & special. A life-style vehicle. Just like all coupes.

And V5 as a child of 1er hatch & 5er Touring. A coupeish super hatch cum wagon with all luxury of a large sedan. An alternative to big wagons, or even large sedans. More luxurious & special than 5er Touring. More like 7er touring, or A8 Sportback, or S-class T. Not a VAN! More like lifted big premium sedan with a backpack.

PS: general shape & design of V5 WILL BE VERY SIMILAR to this (concentrate on general shape, not details!):

Mind that most of todays cars were "crossovers" / "niche vehicles" sometimes ago ...

Eg. BMW 02-series (-> 3er).

Btw, yes - the car looks like a station wagon, but higher and with a more coupeish hatch (aka shooting brake) appearance: more sloppy tail window, shallower greenhouse, more sloppy roof, etc.

Believe me: both cars (X6 & V5) will be amazing!

I actually agree with this....

You have to remember that their are only so many buyers, just because you offer another type of car doesnt mean people are going to buy an additional car especially if its cross over, which will more likely cause people to buy less cars. People buy what they can afford, period. BMW wont get more buyers if they offer this car because its not going to reach out to a price segment....

Are you reconsidering what kind of crossover you will build in the United States in 2008 because of the poor market reaction to the Mercedes-Benz R class?

We have two vehicles in mind. The first is a so-called SAV coupe. We saw the car already. It's the first product. We know clearly in our minds what we want in 2008.

The second product is between a sedan and an SAV. We said we will not call it a crossover but a BMW interpretation of a roomy car concept, with a lot of functionality and a lot of luxury. We did not look at the Mercedes R class. We said it is wrong to follow others.

There is one car company in Germany that we know what they will do because they do exactly what we are doing. I will not mention the name.
