Would be greats news if it become a reality.

Just the Facts:
Albert Biermann of BMW says the high-performance M division would like to develop its own car.
Biermann says the job of the division is to "sell emotion and fun," whatever the engine.

MUNICH, Germany — Albert Biermann, head of product development told Inside Line that BMW's M performance division would like to develop its own car. "From an engineering perspective we have the skills and we'd love to do it," he said. "We've discussed it several times but we've never been able to make the business case. Everything we do has to make money."

The engineer claimed that M was also ready to adapt to the development of alternative powertrains. "Our job is to sell emotion and fun, using the technology that's socially acceptable at the time. Whether that's a combustion engine or an electric motor, we don't care."

The new M5 swaps a V10 for a twin-turbo V8 and Biermann expects this trend to continue. "It's about employing the right technology at the right time and we're on a steep learning curve with turbos. We're getting damn close to matching the response of a naturally aspirated engine but with much lower fuel consumption."

While engine efficiency will improve, Biermann signaled the end of the horsepower race. "We cannot just keep adding power," he said. "M is not selling horsepower; that's not what we're about."

He also refused to rule out developing a diesel M car. "We'd never say never if the technology becomes available, but right now we don't have the diesel technology to match the responsiveness of the new M5."

Inside Line says: Let's hope they make the business case — a latter-day M1 to take on the Audi R8 could be just what BMW needs.

Thaank you. It has to stop somewhere (and with that, drivers get awarded engineers putting effort into balancing out better cars), as it's frankly a safety hazard as to how any untrained layman with a decent paycheck can get preposterous amounts of HP.

I wonder if this would be A "BMW M", or simply an "Msomething". I.e, again, M-B and BMW are tit for tat on everything, they have to copy each other, ad nausea. Basically, I wonder if this will be BMW's SLS competitor.

Hopefully something like that! BMW needs a proper Ultimate Driving Machine in 'halo' car form. And who better to develop it than BMW ///M!?
:t-cheers:

meh, this rumour has been going on for over a decade with the likes of the 'Z10',etc.

Will believe it when I see it.

This is actually an interview with head of M division and its coming from his very own mouth. So I wouldnt use the word 'rumour' ;)

Mind Herr Albert Biermann is Head of development M GmbH (so, M's technical director - or R&D chief).

The CEO of M GmbH is Herr Friedrich Nitschke.

And it's neither Herr Nitschke's nor Herr Biermann's decision what M GmbH will build. Such decision can only made by BMW AG Board of Management.

M devision is a fokin' joke because of BMW AG now: "We're getting damn close to matching the response of a naturally aspirated engine"
Why are you selling your not good enough cars then??? Better stop production until you are spot on and not just close...
We are talking about M and they were never damn close... they were always spot on!
M is not what it was and I'm not buying an M car for the same reasons I bought the e60 M5 anymore.
M is still in my book just because I like BMW design more than others...

As I stated previously there is an idea but it cannot come to reality until BMWi is completely off and running and full mass volume production of CFRP to become more cost effective to use. And this will be after 2015 when BMW will be able to implement CFRP across it's other products but the first recipitant will be BMW M. Now is not the time.

But I have been reading some crazy rumours regarding a RR supercar ala Bugatti (Douchebag) utilsing the experimental V16 under the "Johnny English" Phantom. No super car for RR it does not sit well with the ideals of the brand and also the experimental V16 is that - experimental and not destined for production.
Also in the top ten manufacturers in the sustainability index where BMW sits at the top - The larger VAG is at the bottom thanks in like to the Bugatti and there is no intention BMW will be giving up the top spot which VAG craves. RR are more grounded, the Ghost Coupe and Drophead Coupe are the current priority ,
The next Phantom is in development and being designed off-site like the original. And also in the creative process a Luxury Roadster for 2 and a Four door Coupe type model to sit between the Ghost and Phantom models which could be called Wraith.

You can bet it will suddenly "sit well with the ideals of the brand" if BMW discover they could make a huge amount of money and production capacity is available. SUV's didn't sit well with the M brand until BMW realised they could make huge profits from such a car.

It's somehow embarrassing...
