BMW and its partner, Brilliance China Automotive Holdings, plan to set up a second joint venture plant, likely to be located in the northern Chinese city of Shenyang, Gasgoo.com reports, citing local newspaper the 21st Century Business Herald.
BMW and its partner, Brilliance China Automotive Holdings, plan to set up a second joint venture plant, likely to be located in the northern Chinese city of Shenyang, Gasgoo.com reports, citing local newspaper the 21st Century Business Herald.
The new facility, with an output capacity of 100,000upa, will reportedly assemble BMW's 1-, 3- and 5-Series models.
BMW's joint venture in China, BMW Brilliance Automotive, currently operates out of a 41,000upa-assembly plant in Shenyang. Sales at the joint venture company increased 36% year-on-year in 2007 to 30,600 units.
The OEM sold a total of 51,588 vehicles in the country, including both locally assembled and completely built-up (CBU) units last year, up 41% on figures for 2006.
Compared to BMW's 30,600 units, Audi sold 93,168 locally assembled vehicles in China during 2007, taking its total sales in the country to 100,888 units, the report adds. To compete with Audi and Mercedes-Benz, BMW will eventually have to increase local output.
Besides this, BMW may entertain plans to assemble the next generation X3 SUV in China by 2010 as well. An earlier report carried by Auto Motor und Sport, citing an unnamed source at BMW, claimed that the OEM intends to assemble 13,000 units in 2011. BMW has, however, dismissed this as speculation.
In November, BMW inaugurated its second automotive components delivery centre in China. Thanks to this facility, located in Minhang district in south western Shanghai, the OEM expects to shorten delivery times to dealers.
So, when the new plant is open BMW will be able to produce up to 150,000 upa in both plants.
