BMW's South Carolina Plant Planning "Significant" Product Announcement on March 28th

Someone said here that a luxury concept car was presented in shanghai in a few days, we assume that is the X7, or not? is another surprise?

Since X5 xDrive50i MSRP starts @ $68,200 it's obvious X7 xDrive50i will be priced higher. I guess it will be priced to rival Range Rover V8 ($84,150) and MB GL 550 ($88,600) directly. So, I guess around $85k. Not sure what the US entry model will be. I guess the 40i - costing around 65k. We shall see. Btw, diesel engined X7s & X7 eDrive hybrid will also be offered. No M version though. M Performance model is a possibility but not priority.

Expect the mules (enlarged X5s) to be out soon - testing the chassis. X7 prototypes will be out in early Fall, I guess. Since the final design has just been chosen, and now in the next months first bodies will be produced.

X7 will be premiered in late 2016, while market launch is expected in early 2017.
If they start the X7 @ $85K, that will be another mistake like the 6GC.
MB 4.7 litre V8 GL550 starts @ $63K

They have to get the pricing right and keep it within a touch of the GL otherwise it will be another adventure into the land of stupid and greed.

Unless Mercedes-Benz develops an S-Klasse SUV as the X7 is essentially a 7er SAV with an emphasis on being as close to the road to be as dynamically physical as possible.

As said: I guess the entry model will be X7 xDrive40i - I6 TwinTurbo power with more output than 35i in X5. Around 350/360hp, I guess (with 35i being bumped to 326hp in the next edition)? And the price should be similar to GL450 - so around $65k.

Expect X7 models to offer same engines as the new 7er.
So, X7 40i, X7 40d, X7 50i, while X7 60i will be missed out - but it may d be replaced with X7 M Performance model later during the life cycle.
V12 engine will be featured in RR version of X7 spin-off.

Mind the Greer plant capacity is to be boosted by 50% (+150,000 units), so X7 isn't meant to be a low-volume niche model. Sure not all additional 150,000 units will be X7 (but other X models since demand is huge & the supply will be boosted) yet expect similar sales volumes as MB GL.

According to Car magazine; Six- and eight-cylinder engines will feature, with petrol-friendly markets enjoying a 400bhp X7 45i, and a 500bhp X7 55i. European X7 buyers are sure to want a diesel alternative: to the rescue comes a quad-turbocharged version of the existing ‘50d’ triple-turbo straight-six. The goliath of a turbodiesel is muted to develop 400bhp and 590lb ft.

And the RR version will have a V12.

Cylinder deactivation and nine-speed gearboxes will help rein in fuel consumption. Insiders also report that the BMW X7 will ride on bespoke suspension, and wear 21in wheels to intimidate lesser X3s and X5s clean off the road.

what is going on here?
march 28 has come and gone.. where is the car?

Or was it just an announcement that they will make a X7?

Do we have pictures.. ??

Im confused

It was just an announcement that the X7 is coming and where it will be built. I think I read in there or somewhere that X7 doesn't actually launch until 2016.

And 2016 is already pushing it I think.

It was an official announcement. BMW is going to expand the high end line-up, starting with the X7. Next up will be 8er coupe and Z7 BMW/Toyota CF sports car.

The BMW will also be offered with a V12. A new V12 in fact , potentially equipping the X7 with a V12 moves the goalposts to allow the BMW to place the X7 amongst the entry level of the Bentley etc. Fuel consumption will be achieved by many features but also a progressive update of BMWs Cylinder dimming which will debut in the all new 7er.
Instead of shutting down cylinders it simply dims the power for efficient driving.

It also pushes forward a luxury contender to offset declining luxury sedans and brings back of the shelf BMWs original plan for the Range Rover. The BMW strategy calls for the most dynamic and sporty looking SAV in the class, less utilitarian and more dynamic thanks to strong proportions and a lengthened wheelbase to add more dynamism to the shape. Thanks to a philosophy that started with the original X5. X7 will also place more emphasis on dynamic performance that will put the X7 closer to the road than absolute off road activity.

Don't expect an X7M at least until sales can determine if such a model is essential.
The Rolls-Royce is going to be in a different league but all but confirms that the RR is going to be a reality now that they have confirmed the X7.

This Autobild render is based on the outline preferred and shows that special and appealing Rolls-Royce individuality instead of using a facsimile of a Range Rover. It will have usual RR traits such as coach doors and large grille and delicate body sculpturing. Where the Bentley ends the RR begins.

Rolls-Royce has now become a purveyor of luxury goods , not just cars and a product expansion of a new SUV aims to progress its customer base further along with a RR Roadster , the first purely intimate modern Rolls-Royce.

What does this mean for the Mexico plant that BMW has been scouting? Last I heard, that decision was pushed out to June.

This is to be an engine manufacturing facility.
Construction is well underway on the new plant in Araquari , Brazil which will manufacture the next generation of BMW 1er , BMW 2er Active/Gran Tourer , the next BMW X1 and X2 and MINI Countryman/PACEMAN and the next BMW 3er.

A V12 BMW SUV? Yikes. Mercedes will definitely have to step up the next GL or create something even more expensive.

However if the BMW SUV will have a V12, what is the point of the Rolls?
