M5 BMW M5 (E60): We will never see or hear a car like it again

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports saloon category. The first M5 model was hand-built beginning in late 1984 on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1 that made it the fastest production saloon at the time. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M

This was BMW's finest hour! An achievement an award winning engine with many cylinders - 10 to be precise and a true 10/10 engine!:t-cheers: MATE!

Hail the N/A V10 and for those who owns one of these beasts, you're lucky and indeed in the possession of an icon;)

Now this really makes me p!ssed @ politicians and there money making schemes on automobile-emissions, not that its working - most of the western countries governments are in such bad debt not a trillion Hybrids or EV's are going to save them:t-banghea fools!

Unfortunately this engine did not get found under any other hood except M5 and M6. I am thinking about M1 Hommage.

At least we heard it in a BMW. In a Mercedes we will never know how it would have sounded. V

I'm sorry to say it, but why did you post this??
1, it's not true, and 2, it does not really contribute to this discussion whatsoever.
Tarek never said anything about Mercedes, he only said that the E60 is a legendary BMW, which it is.

The BMW's sound is much more of a scream while the Mercedes E63's is a growl. They are both very impressive. See for yourself:

:t-cheers:

I think he's talking about Mercedes never making a V10 for a production car.

I remember the first tests came out for this car, when all the auto journals were saying it was a super car in a sedans body. The F10 has a lot riding on it's wheels.

Wow!! What an article by mr. no nonsense Chris Harris. It is like he has stolen my thoughts I have had since the introduction of the 1M.

"An exotic supercar engine that found its way into a saloon".

His writing never ceases to amaze me and the whole thread has a dark and pessimistic undertones, rightfully so. I truly believe M peaked back in 2004 - 2007 and this S85 engine defines the pinnacle of M as I believe it is truly the best engine M division ever produced.

This is almost like orchestra music. Listen to the sharp contrast with the E63.

If I had money to buy & live with one car in this world. That would be the M5. That phenomenal high-revving V10 is a gem!!

As much that I detest the E60's grossly insta-dated looks, it only really looks "at home" when in M5 guise IMO, where it gives the car an almost exotic nature in comparison to the regular E60's. As depreciation starts really setting in, a Used E60 M5 will be one of the best and most exotically powered/performing usable and functional cars on the market.

Nice review and what a fantastic car the E60 M5 still is. The noise of the unique V10 engine spinning all the way past 8000rpm and the whip crack throttle response together with the jaw dropping looks makes this my favorite M5 model.

The one-an-only super saloon, if you ask me.

I'm saddened by the high percentage of E60s/E63 currently sitting in salvage yards and/or out of commission right now. The powerplant was too complicated for it's own good.

The one-an-only super saloon, if you ask me.
No doubt. It will be a gem in the future if you are willing to own it along side another car that's less jerky around town. The fuel tank is tiny, consumption high and electronics are complicated. It's as exotic as a Ferrari or Lambo.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
