M2 BMW M2 Powertrain ?

The BMW M2 is a high-performance version of the BMW 2 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. As the 2 Series replaced the 1 Series coupé and convertible models, the first-generation M2 was marketed as the most basic M model in the range. Official website: BMW M
Unlikely as the N54 is traditionally the twin turbo engine designation for the current N-generation petrol I6 engines with the N55 being reserved for the twin-scroll single turbo engine. All reports point to this being a twin turbo engine - for now at least.

So as it turns out, the M135i is using the N55. A bit disappointed it's "just producing" 320 hp. Had expected a 1M matching output. Will be interesting to see if a true M1/2 will get something different.

Ah, but this is an "M Performance" product. We can't have that rivalling the bonafide M produce that is the 1-series M coupe, now can we?

The key thing to remember is that M Performance is the step up from the regular model and then the M will be another step.
The M2 will more than likely follow the same intentions as the 1M. With around the same power output as before but it will be lighter and progressive. M135i is just not a more powerful 1er , M engineers have made a lot of changes to the chassis engineering , suspension , brakes and steering feel. Don't forget this is BMW's first attempt in modern times to launch a competitor in the highly contested Performance hatch market so it must live up to expectations.

Its all very well producing the car with high performance figures and output. But in order to showcase this your car must communicate with the driver and that is something M strive for within every concept. Communication is what makes a good driving car , everything must communicate with each other and then resonate with the driver.

There is one competitor who are more obsessed at beating BMW in everything possible that they completely forget the reasons for why BMW is renowned the world over and judging by their latest offerings which have been criticised for their lack of driver communication.
Are still no way near the level of a BMW.

Concerning the M4 F82 and M2 F22, the powertrains possibilities are:
M4 F82 with either
  • 3.3l V6 based on S63
or

  • 3.0l I6 based on N55
M2 F22 with either

  • 2.2l I4 based on S63
or

  • 2.0l I4 based on N20
Eventhough "insiders" claim the 3.3l V6 to be comming, if that is true I would then believe in seeing a 2.2l I4 also. But now, also as Martinbo has written in the M3 thread, it is hardly believable. I think just as the S63 is based on the N63, it is more logical to see an S55 based on the N55 and an S20 based on the N20.

Time will tell.

I think it is now certain :

M6 : S63 based on N63
M4 : S55 based on N55
M2 : S20 based on N20

Of course final engine codes could be diffrent.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
