BMW’s all-new 2012 3-Series sedan has only been on dealer lots for a couple of weeks, but the four-door has been named in a new National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall. Additionally, BMW has announced a “stop-sale” order for the new 3-Series.

According to the NHTSA, 3-Series models produced between October 19, 2011 and March 18, 2012 don’t comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 202A, “Head Restraints.” Said in plain English, the 3-Series’ front headrests exceed the acceptable downward movement limit of 25mm.
The NHTSA says the non-compliant headrests could move down slightly in the event of a crash, increasing the likelihood of personal injury. However, no injuries have been linked to the recall.
BMW will fix the problem by attaching a clamp to the front seat headrest posts. The automaker will also perform the fix on unsold cars, explaining the temporary stop-sale order.
A total of 7,600 BMW 3-Series vehicles are covered by the recal

So, this is only for the US market...

I read the same. NHTSA, man those guys are really full of it.

Why not ban all the car with less than 3-stars in crash tests from US market ... since they a threat to the driver & passengers in general ...

This "issue" is pure net-picking. Sure it's not perfect ... yet I'm sure the 3-star car are definitely more of a threat yet no recalls there. Just bad ratings. I just don't get it.

It's like MINI was forced to recall Copper S models & change exhaust pipe ends since the were "too exposed" and people got burns on them. What about common sense "not touching hot exhaust pipes". Are people really such morons? ... That everything has to be idiot-proof, so you don't have to use your brain anymore. So you can use your brain for more important mental activities ... like twitting or facebooking or instagramming or other kind of texting & "picturing". etc.

Yes, many recalls from NHTSA are very nitpicking and maybe idiotic (like the case with the hot exhausts), but that may be due to US laws, who allow people to sue car manufacturers for such stupid reasons. What I don't like, though, is that the european counterpart of NHTSA is very slow to react, if it does at all, like with the case of the MINI Cooper S (if I am not mistaken) engine belt tensioner, or something like that. I recall dr Dunkel reporting the same problem with his car.

The NHTSA is definitely proactive in terms of getting things done for our safety IF it gets to their attention and if they get on its case. Many people who have had problems with cars that are safety related and can't get action or respect by the manufacturers, turn to the NHTSA, and if they get them behind them, then usually good things get done.

Makes perfect sense, especially in our day and age where the tax payer gets little to no value for the taxes we pay(y)
