BMW has this to say about the i8.

THE MOST PROGRESSIVE SPORTS CAR.

That's whole load of BMW marketing BS. Which you've fallen for hook line and sinker.

You're so fast to judge the I8 but you haven't even driven the car.

Kiwi, you have no idea about I8 and what people want.

I'm sure you haven't driven the car either and I bet my assumption is pretty close to the mark on why people are buying the i8, it's mostly early adopters, me toos and brand whores.

No, I havent but I'm not judging like you do. I voted for NSX but I fully support those who put their money on i8.

No you're just following along with the herd and aren't really looking at it objectively.

You just don't like my opinion because it contrary to your's, how do you know your opinion is the correct one, you don't know more than I do. But I suspect after the initial rush they'll be discounting these like mad to shift them. The NSX has eaten BMW's i8 lunch.

What are you on about? I'm just quoting BMW material - that's all - it is what it is! There it is in the public domain. I'm falling for nothing.

@KiwiRob, why don't you just come out and be honest with the community that you are anti-BMW, anti-BMW owners and anti a number of members on this forum. Your contempt is palpable.

I don't know about that. I8 isnt exactly failing in sales.

Without wanting to get into an argument, you can't really compare sales figures and judge a car to be a success. BMW were always going to build the i8 so that demand outstripped supply. The fact that it has a long waiting list or is sold out for twelve months just means BMW got their figures spot on. If BMW built the i8 in the same numbers as the Porsche 911, then you wouldn't be able to move for unsold i8s in BMW dealer car parks. Not unless they gave huge discounts like they have to do to shift M5 and M6s. All IMHO, of course.

It's very easy for Sutcliffe to wax lyrical about the i8 when you don't have to spend your own money. The i8 is almost twice the price of the M4.

I get the point of the i8, and in ten to fifteen years when we have a hybrid M4 which does 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds, and 60 mpg, then it will be down to the i8.

I don't think it's brand whores at all. BMW are out of their element when they get to the i8 price levels, and they're competing with Porsche, Aston Martin, and Bentley. Any "brand whores" wouldn't be looking at the i8.

@KiwiRob

Seriously? I can understand you not liking the concept of the i8, but you need to give credit where it's due.

The i8, whether you like it or not, is the first sportscar with a purpose engineered CFRP monocoque chassis and an output oriented hybrid system, yet with a tiny engine, instead of a massive powerplant (I have the 918 and its likes in mind). It's got the looks, it's got the tech, it's got the joy. Why not call it what it is?

PS. I also prefer the NSX over the i8, I also don't like where this concept will drive the automotive world, but you have to admit it. It's impressive what BMW pulled out with the i sub-brand.

I agree, this is a very un-BMW vehichle, for good and for bad.

Considering I've owned BMW and MINI's that's a stupid thing for you to say. I'm a huge BMW fan just not much of a fan products they are building today, which for the most part is squarely aimed at the brand whore crowd.

I'm not anti any member on this forum either, I just have opinions which are contrary to the Germancarforum herd.

The car I've wanted to own since my granddad bought one when I was a kid is the 3.0 CSI. BMW have never built a more beautiful vehicle. I will own one.

There are plenty of wealthy brand whores Betty, the only difference is they can afford more expensive stuff.

That doesn't make any sense. Somebody spending £100,000 (or equivalent in other currencies) on an i8 is not doing it for the badge. For the same money they could buy a Porsche or an Aston Martin, both of which have a greater cache than BMW. They might buy an i8 to be an early adopter or because it's "different" and "new", but it's not for the BMW badge.

You should see some of the wealthy people I meet in Russia; the one thing I've learnt is seriously wealthy people often make no sense at all.

All I hear is bitter ramblings by some one who can't have anything nice about how there is nothing nice. And anyone who has what he can't is just an idiot for having it. Sad! But go seek some help.

As for the i8, who cares what a narrow minded bigot thinks. There have been enough reviews now by people who have actually driven the car and know a think or two about cars - Chris Harris, Sutcliff, Gavin Green have all waxed about how the car drives. It is gone against a lot of sports car at the end of the year awards and done pretty well for itself. Here it is specifically in the Car "Sports car of the year" comparison.

How the individual professional car journalists voted.

You can see i8 figuring in the top 3 of majority of the journalist's list. I have talked to some one who owns a 991 GT3 and an i8, he loves the way the i8 drives. I think I will go with the opinion of all these people who have actually driven an i8 over the bigot who has probably never ever driven anything nicer than a VW econobox.

When they place Golf R, M4, Megan & i8 in a list of sports cars then IMO that list is a mockery of itself. There's only 2, possibly 3 cars in that list I'd call a sportscar, the 4C, Cayman GTS and possibly the F-Type, although it kinda lends itself towards the GT end of the spectrum. 2 are supercars, the 458 & 650, 2 hot hatches, leaving the M4 and i8. It's a stupid list.

You know I was thinking about writing a list of all the interesting and exotic vehicles I've been in as a passanger and driven myself but what's the point you're just a nobody on a forum and I don't need to justify myself you you or anyone else.

I will say that the scariest thing I've ever been in/on was a Honda Blackbird driven by a wee Japanese man who used to work as a test rider for HRC, I was 23 at the time and have never been so scared in my entire life. Think ghost rider on youtube and you wouldn't be far off.

BMW 3.0 CSI modernised with M5 engine, suspension and interior. Like a Singer but in reverse.

I would love to know if there are any specialists modernising CSi them like Eagle with the E-type

You want to argue semantics on what form factor constitutes a sports car, knock yourself out to eternity. To me, what constitutes the essence of a sports car and what is important to me is how the car drives, not the form factor. And on that front by most accounts by people who have actually driven an i8, it redeems itself very well against other cars that are also known for their driving prowesses.
