Some won't like how they kept calling the E63 the benchmark of the segment at the beginning of the vid haha.Love how the two cars being presented in their natural colors, black for Mercedes and blue for BMW.

Boring review I have to say. It's as if they were reviewing accounting software and not super saloons...

I want to know at what point exactly the M5/E63 rivalry broke down to this. Pretty familiar rhetoric :D

The E63 is more sporty and edgy and would be their choice if it was the only car in the garage while the M5 would be their choice if there was a another weekend type kinda car in the garage..sums it up nicely. :D

It would seem like there are more reviews saying the E63 is the sportier car this time than the other way around, right? I haven't gone through all the reviews.

M5 is a better allrounder and easier to live with is verdict about the M5 vs E63.

Have there been reviews around, comparing E63 NON-S with the M5? I don't know if there is some difference in roughness/sportiness between E63 and E63S ... or if E63S is just an ECU tune to tbe E63?
If there is a difference, then the verdict is useless - meaning, that you have to compare M5 Competition with E63S, because Competition Pack for sure means more sportiness and not only a slight ECU tune.... as it was always the case (stiffer sway bars, different damper setup, different e-diff software, maybe slightly lower, evtl. meatier tire sizes)...
So, if someone likes more roughness and adrenaline, he should for sure wait the few months for the comp pack.

It's a good role reversal for AMG whose cars fell short on engagement in comparisons 3-15 years ago. The bodacious engine note and road focused ride quality isn't a deterrence as it provides greater distinction from faux performance saloons such as the E53, M550i and S6.

I didn't see the need to start a new thread for this, so here goes...

And in quick summary to their twin-test:

Verdict

First place: BMW M5

The M5 is faster and more comfortable than the E 63. It’s also as good to drive and offers a great level of tech, so while its character is a little more subtle than the AMG, its spread of ability is actually broader, by the slimmest of margins. It’s practical enough and, although efficiency isn’t as important with cars like these, it’ll be slightly cheaper to run, which is a bonus.

Second place: Mercedes-AMG E 63 S

If you’re after real charisma, the E 63 S is brimming with it. It’s as fast as you’ll ever need, handles superbly, offers lovely balance, impressive practicality and an addictive noise. But the M5 is just a little bit better in key areas: it’s marginally faster, the ride is noticeably better and it’s more comfortable and refined. Still, personal choice will play a big part here; both are brilliant.

Other options for similar money...

New: Alpina B5 Biturbo AWD

Price: £89,00
Engine: 4.4-litre V8, 600bhp

If the M5 is a little too obvious, Alpina’s take might be for you. The B5 Biturbo boasts four-wheel drive and even more power, with 600bhp. The ride quality is arguably even better, while being based on a 5 Series means the same great traits.

Used: Porsche Panamera Turbo

Price: £99,50
Engine: 4.0-litre V8, 542bhp

Even as a used buy it’s a little more expensive, but the Porsche badge arguably carries more cachet, and the Panamera Turbo matches the M5 and E 63’s performance with an even more premium image and some very advanced tech.
