It has some good 8er (G15) and 3er (G20) vibes in it. The front section looks very heavy, it is not as harmoniously integrated as in the rear-driven F20.

Other than that, it looks good for FWD compact car.

Indifferent. Nondescript. The rear could be from any brand. Only the front snout is definitively BMW.

We are in 2019. It will certainly be a great car. But it's not desirable to me any more.

The kidney grill ruins the whole car. I don´t see a clear design language any more. The kidney grill has to be split into two parts again. And it has to be more angular to fit to the headlights.

Do either of these actually say "BMW" to you either?

Yes, the Bangle style concave hatch structured by sharp edges screams BMW. The now softened down edges, and new tail lights shape and junction which might well have been from the new A3, take away a fair share of the 1er's personality. The bulbous headlights, the FWD proportions (which the A-Class cleverly reduces with its quite low and flat hood), the overall lack of refinement in the details, make it look like a generic compact hatch with little premium feel.

Bangles surfacing was noticeable across a few models but it was only that relation to other models that made it "BMW", it wasn't inherently related to what had gone before. By the time you've seen a few thousand 3-ers on the road with this language, it will be accepted as what a BMW should look like.

People are pissed that BMW made this FWD, so most of the reactions here are going to be based on looking for reasons to dislike it, that's just my opinion of course.

Also... FTR, I think the new A family from Mercedes looks utter gash.

Like an E46 is the quintessential BMW?

The E3 is the quintessential BMW.. the E46 is a jellybean by comparison :D

But they looked vastly different than anything in the segment. At least they did to me.

The clown shoe profile did give it a distinct look, and the E87 has a great stance on the road... I'm not sure the F20 every really got that right, or the styling details either.
