In October this year BMW will debut with the convertible version of the just launched 3-series Coupe. It will be powered by the same engines as the coupe, and is equipped with a retractable steel roof which folds completely into the boot. The current convertible will continue to be built until the end of this year, by then a total 270 000 units of this model will have been built and sold. The new 3-series convertible will hit the showrooms in March 2007.

Yeah, from what I see, I believe it. Look how large the boot is, and how there isn't just a cutout for where the softtop would go. Lots of signs of being a hardtop convertible.

Retractable steel roof? SLK type?

where you been man? this is old news.

I'm kinda suprised w/ what we see here, I for sure thought this would be a unique design set apart from the coupe, but I guess the board didn't approve of such an idea. W/ the retractable roof being it's own design in the way it intergrates into the rest of the body of the car I'd very much expect the two to look quite different from one another. Finally glad BMW has something on offer for the coupe/convertible fray.:usa7uh:

this will be gr8 hardtop.. i love hartops.. i hope it looks good with the roof up though..

PS
Saw the C70 today a black one.. that car is seriously hot..no joke..

Everyone loves hardtop convertibles... Though this car is not INCREDIBLE in my eyes, the hardtop convertible is an AWESOME touch. Makes the car complete! Sure it will outsell the competition. Price should hopefully be decent. I wonder if the hardtop 'vert makes a major difference in price?

I'm still not understanding why they went with a hard top for their cabrio. There will surely be a few people opting for a smaller engine just to get their hands on the convertible, especially in the U.S. People just love convertibles and for the few that were put off by the canvas top look will eat this one up. I think the regular coupe sales will eventually dwindle sometime earlier in its' life.

I'm wondering the same thing.

Right now the 3er cabrio bases at just shy of $40k. My guess is that the price will creep a good $2k if only because of the hardtop.

$2K, though high that would be ok for some, but still a MAJOR price change... think about a fully optioned one with a decent engine to pull the wieght with... Price i think will be out of the ballpark.

Wonder what it will affect if anything? coupe sales? cabrio? Who will want what and who will be willing to spend the money for it either? I have a feeling it will get pretty hefty....

Right. But I also get the feeling that price creep on the new coupe and cabrio deliberately creates a space down the line for a modestly priced 2er.

I always had the feeling that BMW could get away with a lower-cost model in the US, provided it wasn't a "cheap" model. If the 3er Cabrio starts with real-world pricing in the mid-40s there's plenty of room for a very good 2er that'll run low to mid 30s.

I don't really see this space in the pricing gap between the bottom line 3er coupe and the what will be the 2er coupe as anything new, it's been this way for a whle, there was just no propsal for a smaller, cheaper BMW coupe. Between the two I see the 3er coupe as being more my kind of car given it's larger size and increased performance potential. 2er is gonna be hot though for sure.

Looks excellent. I always thought that convertable E46 was a beauty, so this car will hopefully be phenominal in appearence.
