M3/M4 BMW E36 M3 Compact - secret hot hatch never produced

The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986. The BMW M4 is a high-performance version of the BMW 4 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M, that has been built since 2014. As part of the renumbering that splits the coupé and convertible variants of the 3 Series into the 4 Series, the M4 replaced those variants of the BMW M3. Official website: BMW M

Engineered like no other car in the world
Premium
The BMW 3 series Compact was launched in 1993 as an affordable alternative to the BMW 3 series saloon and was the car that started the premium hatchback class to rival the Golf, Focus etc. and the car that got Audi on board with the A3.

This smallish car, about 4210mm in length was available initially only with 4 cylinder engines from the 3 series and later received one 6 cylinder engined model, the 323Ti with 125kw (170PS) as the top model.

Many people were of course wondering whether BMW would bring out more powerful versions hoping to give the car a rival for hot hatches such as the Golf R32 4 Motion, but unfortunately this never happened.

Well to the production car world there was no rival but to the delight of some enthusiasts and to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the magazine Auto Motor und Sport in 1996, BMW M hand built one example of a special version of the Compact that incorporated all the technical aspects of the E36 BMW M3 coupe. This hand built car was noticeable for its powertrain of the legendary 236kW (321PS) and 350NM straight six 3.2ltr engine from the M3 coupe with 5 speed manual gearbox, unique quad exhausts, subtle boot spoiler, M3 coupe mag wheels, Recaro sports seats, 4 point seat belts as well as alcantara covered steering wheel and gear lever.

It was also 150kg lighter and more agile than the M3 coupe and this resulted in some blistering performance figures at the time, as per AMS 0-100km/h in just 5.3sec, 0-160km/h in 11.4sec and 0-200km/h in a blistering 18.5sec. To put those performance figures into perspective, the latest BMW M135i (pre-facelift model with 235kw (320PS) engine and 8 speed auto) was tested by AMS in 2013, it achieved 0-100km/h in 4.9sec, 0-160km/h in 11.5sec and 0-200km/h in 18.1sec. So this car was a phenomenal achievement considering it was designed 19years ago!

Or do like Smart did and fit incredibly thin biscuit tyres in the front so it can have massive understeer and pass the elk test!

I remember when that test, the one with the A-klasse, was released. Damn, there was a bit of a ruckus!

Yea that A-class fall over was a massive blow for Mercedes Benz I am guessing the BMW advertising department at that time must have been itchy to bring some advert out to rip them off!

I remember Racing Dynamics put a V12 in the E36 Compact. For some reason, I've always wanted to own one. :D
The car was a one off projecr show car, after the company closed operations it was sold in Germany.

You were right and we must bow down to these people for making this car! Look at that engine it is a beauty!:bowdown:

Thanks, it was a fun project and a blast to drive. After the company closed it was sold in Germany to a competitor tuner, but can't remember the name.

Nope the drivetrain and suspention was taken from an M3 with the addition of a Quaife ltd slip diff, weight ratio was balanced at 50-50.
It was a blast to drive !

Forgot... the engine was pulled back about 15/20 cm in the engine bay to achieve the optimal balancing.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
