3 Series (E36) BMW E36 Compact - Mechanical Issue

I was planning to repair a car with have in our yard by swapping engines with a donor car. Although both cars are 316i and a 1997 P-Reg one is an automatic. My mechanics have informed me that because of this the engines cannot be swapped over.

Can anyone verify this for me please?
