BMW Design. The Insight.

Yep Hussein, but mind something: If he is critic with some design, is because he CAN.
There's no problem with SOME design. It's about design in general. If he was a lawyer I wouldn't be arguing with him about the very profession. But I can disagree with a judgment.
No hard feelings there, I just think it's dangerous to generalize and judge about something I know so little about.

And Hussein, I know you are a designer [...] and I wasn't even trying to argue you about anything. Why are you saying this?

I felt that there is a lot of negativity towards design there and I was trying to say that what you (not only you klier) think what design is, is not true. And i hate markeitng for that because they give a false image.
No hard feelings.

Let's get back to bashing Marketing :D

It comes down to there being a difference between constructive and destructive criticism. Sure, some people are just armchair cynics who like to put things that they do or don't understand down just to make themselves feel better. But, car design is an art, and as with any art, it is open to interpretation and critique. Being a car enthusiast, the most wide spread and popularized form of critique will stem from the most artful and subjective nature of a car: Design.

Radiohead can put out a new Album, and I can criticize it for not sounding good to me..... Who am I to criticize the great Radiohead, one can say, however, they put their art out for us to hear and indulge upon.

I'm a big design enthusiast, and thus I'm a huge design critic. It doesn't mean that I belittle the Designers, as I'm fascinated by their work, their inspirations, how they linked current models with past models so carefully and well, etc. etc. However, if I see what I think is a crappy and/or amateur design, I'll state it, as constructively as I can at least.

I'm all good with Design driven, however, what bothers me is what I said before: This is simply Marketing. M-B and BMW have been Design leaders for a long, long time. What, is M-B above the herd now more than they were back in the 50's when the 300SL Gullwing was released? HAH! It's laughable to even believe that gibberish, considering their nicest car is a modernized replica of that. The common consensus is that BMW hasn't been able to find their Design stride that they had in the 90's, and lest we forget that the Bangle era, which actually IS the era where BMW really put emphasis in "Design expression" is derided as BMW's ugliest ducklings yet, with cars that already look terribly dated.

What we're hearing now is the *Marketing Teams* trying to push their leadership in Design to the forefront, when before, they let the Designs speak for themselves. M-B is the current best example. M-B's have always been Design leaders, however, now, the Designs try very hard to look like leaders.... Ironically, by looking so lacking in effortlessness in comparison to before, it makes them look more like trend followers in some cases.
