Yeah but the entire bodyshell is bespoke, besides maybe the A Pillar.
3.0 on the other hand clearly uses an M4 body with tacked on overfenders.

I like it, but don't love it.
I understand the affection it garners after BMW released cars like the 5er, 7er and XM, but it's too slick and pretty. As a super-limited production car, I understand its purpose. It just doesn't push the design language forward while retaining those certain BMW cues that make it BMW. When I think of good modern BMW concepts, the VFL was the long-standard bearer of what a good modern BMW concept ought to be. The VFL concept was only recently supplanted by the Neue Klasse concepts of what good BMW concept should be.
I understand the affection it garners after BMW released cars like the 5er, 7er and XM, but it's too slick and pretty. As a super-limited production car, I understand its purpose. It just doesn't push the design language forward while retaining those certain BMW cues that make it BMW. Eternally fervent fans of the BMW brand may accuse me of sacrilege and forever banish me to the ranks of the infidels. It may be consolation that my subjective musings are just that and as such, not at all important. But here goes anyway...
As nice as the Skytop concept is (and it is REALLY a VERY PRETTY car), I suspect that the enthusiasm that it initially generates will soon subside and that it will become a faint memory in the way that, for example, the Gran Lusso concept has become. Certainly an exercise in timeless elegance, but nothing that will cause significant seismic tremors in the automotive landscape. It would be nice if much of what is seen on the Skytop concept would germinate into elements presented on future BMW volume production cars. But that could be perceived as a "step backwards", a reactionary response to a large consuming public that has become addicted to what is referred to as "cutting edge progressive". A bit of a shame. In essence, the Skytop concept features proportions of architecture that are not that different to those seen on the M-B C236 CLE, a volume produced swansong vehicle. So much for my subjective rambling and...no offense intended.

It would fit beautifully in as a high end limited edition model. It does look stylish, but the interior is the slight disappointment just been an 8 series covered in tan leather all over, which looks a bit monotonous and not really luxurious.

I don't really get that. The exterior is so bespoke that only the windshield is from an 8 series. And then they put the exact 8er interior in it with some added leather. Makes no sense and should have been far more bespoke for the suggested price point.

I think you're over simplifying the 3.0 CSL to be honest, pretty much all of the body was bespoke - and the processing of the paint finish at Moosthenning seems far more labour intensive than would be required for the Skytop.
That said, I'd imagine the price differential is almost entirely not down to any kind of cost plus model. 3.0 CSL might have needed to cover initial facility development in Dingolfing/Moosthenning, for example. Most likely though, in my humble opinion, was that 750k was a tough sell for the level of customisation that the 3.0 CSL offered. The Z4 Touring, was cheaper, but was even less 'custom', and was consequently aborted. So now we have the Skytop... Z4 Touring Price with a higher level of customisation... perhaps the sweet spot.
