Hot! BMW AG: What's Next

Latest news, trending discussions, reviews, and major updates
The United States is a completely car-centric country. It’s huge, and cars are by far the most important means of transportation. Public transport, especially passenger rail infrastructure, lags far behind Europe. So you either fly or drive. That’s why Americans are extremely dependent on cars and have a huge demand for big, powerful vehicles.

There’s nothing surprising about the X7 growing in size. BMW almost always makes each new generation a few inches larger. While the X5 keeps growing, it wouldn’t make sense for the X7 to stay the same size.

The current G07 X7 is 5181 mm long. The G05 X5 is 4935 mm long.

If the upcoming G65 grows by 10 cm, it will reach 5035 mm and get even closer to the X7. For that reason, the X7 has to grow as well to maintain the segment gap. The G67 X7 will probably come in around 5300 mm. And it will still be shorter than the G70 7 Series.

I still cannot comprehend the sheer size of the Escalade. It’s gigantic.

Makes the GLS look tiny !!!

That’s why the 3rd row is tiny on the GLS compared to all Escalades.

X7 and GLS are at least 10 inches (25cm) to short.
X7 is actually longer, being 5181 mm, while Escalade is at 5144 mm. On the other hand, GLS is the longest at 5207 mm. If we count the Escalade ESV it’s a completely different story though. That one is at 5700mm, almost a whopping 6 meters 😳.

X7 is part of the Grand-Klasse Luxury segment so it reflects a separate design language from the Neue-Klasse derived iX3 and soon to be X5,iX5 and the forthcoming iX1.

It wouldn't fit down half the roads, lets be honest.

It genuinely wouldn't. But that makes it even more special when you see one from time to time. It looks twice as big as it does on US roads where they sell cars where even an Escalade is moderately sized...

As far as BMW SUVs go, the exterior dimensions of the upcoming new ix5 should be more than enough. Those exterior dimensions should be enough regardless of manufacturer IMHO.

This X7 is almost comically super-sized.
X7 you can have your kids sit in the 3rd row. X5 you can only have your kids sit in the 3rd row if they don’t have legs.

Oops my bad. I checked it again and the one I mentioned was the previous generation Escalade. Thanks for the info.

I am not sure where you are getting your measurements, but from Cadillac's own website, the current Escalade is 211.9 Inches long (5382.26 mm) and the Current MOPF X7 is 203.6 inches (5181 mm). The ESV is 227 inches long (5765.8 mm). The Escalade makes the X7 look like an X5 when viewed side-to side.

So now we're switching to window trim mounted door handles. New X5, new X7, new Q7, and new Q9 will all have this type of door handle? Another cost cutting move? Saving money on stamping the doors for door handles?

Another case of fixing something that actually isn't broken to begin with. They'll say it's for a lower drag most certainly.

Though I wonder if it's actually cost cutting since it's only for the expensive cars. It's likely just an "innovation" for the sake of it.

I'm not sure but I'm sure they want to protect their margins.

But 100% they will say stuff about oh lower drag and whatever.

Perhaps the new door handles are more expensive than the old ones; we can't know for sure, but they certainly seem to be.

They've always been a delicacy reserved for concept cars, a detail that elevates the overall appearance and makes it more luxurious, modern, clean, and, if you will, "conceptual"—in my opinion, all positive, and the aerodynamic improvement is a very real plus; you only have to see how great they look on the Skytop/Speedtop.

They're electronically operated push button handles. Highly doubt it's more expensive. Maybe more expensive than the actual physical handles but less expensive overall due to simpler manufacturing of the door in general.
