X6 BMW ActiveHybrid X6 and ActiveHybrid 7

The BMW X6 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV by German automaker BMW. The BMW X6 is the originator of the sports activity coupé (SAC), referencing its sloping rear roof design. It combines the attributes of an SUV (high ground clearance, all-wheel drive and all-weather ability, large wheels and tires) with the stance of a coupé (styling featuring a sloping roof).
^None, because the 7er still has the utility, i.e. it looks like it can haul more than a sack of potatoes in its trunk. Has newer up to date tech, and its combined mileage looks like it will beat the Lex.

The 7-series is less powerful, with 459bhp and 561lb ft, but faster, cleaner and more fuel efficient. It hits 62mph in 4.9sec, returns 29.1mpg and emits 219g/km of CO2. It’s not a full hybrid, though, and can’t run on the electric motor alone; it’s just a back-up for the V8.

With a V8...I highly doubt it will get the same exact thing as the S400hybrid does with a V6. :eusa_thin Sounds fishy.

And with those power numbers it should outrun the 750 and give better economy, unlike the Escalade and LS600hL which both only return 1-2 MPG better than the vehicles they're based on. The only question will be the price. If they price it like Mercedes did the S400 relative to the S550, BMW will have a hit. Unlike Lexus, I doubt BMW will charge a huge premium for their hybrid.

Better aerodynamics and less drag ==> less fuel consumption :D

Same thing applies here, as Just_me also pointed out:

I feel like car manufacturers have a deal to make every hybrid have atleast 1 tarded detail..
So that ppl know your coming from a mile..:)

PS
Besides MB ofcourse..you cant differ a S400 hybrid from a normal petrol one;)

Very much so. It's all marketing magic to make the rims mimic the soft look of the blades attached to a wind turbine. Make note of the artificially blue and chopped L.A skyline in addition to the dolphin blue body paint.

Damn. I'm loving this...

EnI, seeing that everything's official now could you explain / source some information for me please?

Looking at the above pic most componentry and location is fairly self-explanatory. We can see the integration of the two electric motors within the conventional planetary-gear automatic transmission. Also, we know that the battery power pack is located at the rear of the car.

What component is located above the turbos? I see a substantial wiring loom exiting from it - what does this do? [I get that it's the wiring from/to the battery pack but where's it going and why?] Also its location interests me... surely the huge amounts of heat generated by the turbos will soak upwards into this? Is there some form of special heat shielding?

This is also a nice picture, but I notice the absence of a torque convertor. Has it just been eliminated from the picture for illustrative purposes or is there a new method of coupling the transmission to the flywheel?

Is the 7 speed a new transmission? AFAIK BMW doesn't have a 7 speed automatic. Why not the 8 speed used in the 7er?

Anyway I didn't realize there would be such a big difference between the X6 and the 7. Wonder why they released them togther, why not separately and extract more PR?

As for the wiring running from the top of the engine, I am guessing that is where power electronics are located.

In terms of marketing dynamics we had to make the "Active Hybrid" campaign epic in terms of visuals. After all this is the future of BMW and it will offer a model ot two across the range , and it neatly describes the phrase "on our own terms" not according to the terms of other manufacturers. Meaning that a BMW Active Hybrid model will after all remain a true BMW.

Next year we will launch two Active Hybrid 5's one at the top of the range and a segment busting Active Hybrid diesel 5 in the mid range.
2010 is all about the new 5er for the first half of the year.

Once we get to the launch of the 5er you will see BMW mount a more aggressive marketing strategy as we begin to call out the manufacturers who try and fail to interpret the BMW image in their own products with their concept of marketing when their products are anything but. We will also be stating our independence more so.

This will probably mean that we will be seen as (as someone pointed out to me in Frankfurt bar ) The "Douchbags" of the premium car industry.
But it's time we became aggressive in this area.

Norbert Reithofer's signing off remark about Audi at the latest conference was the first signs that BMW are now getting aggressive over it's markets.

Before the IAA I will give you an insight into BMW's Active Hybrid Future including The entry level BMW Hybrid - BMW Active Hybrid 1 , all the way to the top.

The first thing I noticed here is the Audi style overhang of the engine. I guess it is because the driveline takes more space, but how will this be handled in the future? Will all cars get this really bad overhang, will the cars get longer wheelbase or will only the hybrid versions get the overhang?

Actually, this placement of the engine over, rather than behind, the front axle is no different to that of the regular X5 / X6 platform.

In the ghosted image - albeit that of an X5 - above you can see where the engine is positioned relative to the front axle.

The length of the transmission has little influence on this engine position relative to the front axle in a case such as this. In this instance, a longer gearbox will simply mean that the centre differential is further aft, resulting in a shorter propshaft. Which, by the looks of it is hardly any shorter - the transmission casing is much the same size - a testament to feat of engineering that went into this compact transmission/electric motor configuration.

My guess is the cable connects the Power management unit to the electric motor which seems obvious.
What is above the Turbo imo; could be the power management unit which may be performing the following functions:

  • KER:capturing energy when the system is braking. I wonder if the system generates electricity when the motors are not in use(braking) that charges the battery
  • Charging of the Battery pack
  • Voltage conversion and smoothening if motors serves a dual purpose.
  • I also see potential problems with heat, so I wont be surprised if the PMU have a set of cooling fans for the electronics.

Why didn't BMW offer a X5 ActiveHybrid as well, since the X5 and X6 share the same underpinnings, and would be easy to offer X5 & X6 ActiveHybrid together, like when the X5M and X6M were unveiled together?

Maybe in due time, for now, this is only for the mega exclusive and to showcase the technology. Think of it as the oposite of the thaught behind the Hondas and Toyotas.
