A BMW test driver was killed in an accident that took place on the Autobahn while the man was behind the wheel of a 3-Series hybrid prototype.

Tragic. I'll hold off the mawkish "RIP" comments as I didn't know the driver, but that is a very sad event.

Reading the circumstances how it happened I am seriously going to reconsider doing any more high speed runs on the autobahn.

This is a very unfortunate event, I think from now on manufacturers should equip their test cars with all the safety equipment, I am sure if the car has those forwards scanning radar the accident might not be fatal.

RIP

The survival rate of these 70% offset frontal impact accidents is low. Yes, more work should be done to minimize these tragic occurrences.

BTW, is that a new bodykit for the 3 series?

From everything I have read about the Autobahn the drivers are super disciplined but accidents like this are inevitable when you have vehicles passing others at speeds upwards of 100mph more. It's shocking just how quick you come up on distance traffic at 150+mph.

About one month ago I was passing some lorries at 300+ km/h. They were doing around 90km/h. That crash could have been me. The fact that it happened to a BMW test driver means it could happen to anybody. I'm sure he did everything he could to avoid the accident and had skills superior to me, yet it still happened. I will think seriously about doing those speeds again on anything but an empty three-lane autobahn. It's just not worth the risk.

The people that do realize that are a minority and the people that will actually do what they do realize is safest are almost nonexistent...

Then don't do it if it scares you. You can drive 100 km/h on the Autobahn too....
Keep using that V10 my man. No need to be scared, freak accidents happen everywhere and anytime.

I will keep going as fast as possible, when possible.

This is tragic indeed and the loss to his loved ones and friends is sad.

For BMW - it does look like the firewall / safety cell and chassis floor really stayed "intact" for such a collision.

Don't turn this horrific accident into a thinly veiled attempt to make ME appear "scared".

You also deliberately misquoted me and left out my caveat, which was "....on anything other than empty three-lane autobahn".

Yes they do, and doing 300+km/h means the consequences will almost certainly be death. I posted a video about a month ago of me doing that speed on a two-lane autobahn, passing trucks. If any one of those trucks had pulled out, just like they did to that BMW driver, myself and my dad would not be here now.

A wise man is someone who learns from other people's mistakes.
