BMW is plotting a flagship coupe – the 9-series – to be spun off the high-tech architecture of the latest 7-series limo. The four-door, four-seat coupe takes the Gran Coupe theme from the 4- and 6-series ranges, and supersizes it to long-wheelbase 7-series proportions.

The 9-series is the first all-new model to be approved by new(ish) chairman, Harald Krüger, the unfortunate fellow who collapsed during his speech at the 2015 Frankfurt show. Krüger, his r&d chief Klaus Fröhlich and design supremo Adrian van Hooydonk met before Christmas, to review key future models at a ‘LUP’ meeting, shorthand for long-term corporate planning.

They gave the green light to a luxury coupe positioned between 7-series and the Rolls-Royce Ghost. Typically, a BMW coupe would wear an even numbered badge, but since management does not want to revive the little loved 8-series and does not own the rights to 10-series, 9-series is a likely designation.

BMW dabbled in a 9-series concept with the Gran Lusso Coupe, co-designed with Pininfarina and shown at the 2013 Villa d´Este concours, though this was a two-door model. The actual small volume, big statement flagship is expected to go on sale in early 2020, six months after the facelifted 7-series it relies on for its underpinnings. Drivetrains reportedly include six-cylinder plug-in hybrid, twin-turbo V8 and M960i/M9 powered by a 650bhp V12. With a bit of luck, the all-electric powertrain package under development for the next Phantom will eventually find its way into the 9-series too.

Not so long ago, the big, swoopy BMW was set to face stiff German competition, but Mercedes earlier this year axed the proposed four-door S-class/Maybach coupé (though a cabriolet will emerge in 2016) and Audi pulled the proposed A9. So the closest rivals should be Brits, the next Jaguar XJ and the Aston Rapide replacement.

First of all the 9er will be a Sedan not a Coupe.
It has officially been given the green-light and it will be positioned above the 7er, bridging BMW to Rolls-Royce. It is BMWs response to the Maybach but with more exclusivity and individuality than a 7er.
Potential customers that have been given an indication with the Vision Future Luxury Concept as it was sent across the globe would like to not only have a car that can rejeauvinate in the rear but also one they can actually drive without being mistaken for a chauffeur unlike the Maybach.

What else is on the agenda?
A BMWi Crossover, a new 6er which combines ideas from the Vision Future Luxury and CSL Hommages with the current car.

Yes we are still getting the X7 super SAV. I have seen a design prototype for the V12 model. Yes there will be an X7 6.0ixDrive.
The important thing to know is that they have done the X7 brilliantly from the visual standpoint. It makes the Bentayga dated but strangely X7 is a good companion to the Range Rover. The Range Rover still looks great even against the Bentayga. Which is now the Noveau Riche's new plaything.

so you are telling me that BMW is making a sedan North of 150K euro?

Historically BMW Always get burned when they venture into cars above 120K.. they better bring their A game especially interior wise unless they want Another 8er/Z8 story on their hands.

If true im excited, they have all the Money, know how and design pedigree to make it fly, the big question is if they let their creatives be creative enough.

Yes because the Vision Future Luxury taught us that BMW customers want a more exclusive and individual BMW. They see potential for a BMW in the Luxury Plus segment above the Affordable Luxury Segment of the 7er.
Most of all it is something they would like to drive themselves. You can Drive a Rolls-Royce Ghost or Phantom in its standard wheelbase. If you take the extended model you are the Chauffeur. The BMW will still be a Sedan its not an extended 7er. You will be able to drive a 9er which is first and foremost what potential customers want.
Costs are directly shared with development of the next Rolls-Royce Phantom generation. So once again it will be vehicle that can be generated off an existing model architecture, material application and sustainable drivetrain options therefore cutting costs if developed independently.

Well let's just not act like BMW fulfills every wish of their customers.
Here is what BMW fans wanted for decades:
1. Proper Sportscar
2. BMW M7
3. Less X modells
4. Proper sounding M cars
5. CSL versions

This is what they got:
None of the above:)

Let's see
1. Proper Sports Car? The BMW i8 -The sports car which demonstrates multi-million euro innovation in a car at a fraction of the cost.
A car our competitors yet to come up with an answer for.
But if you don't think the i8 is a proper sports car then watch the "Progressive" sports car become more "Progressive" in 2016.

Then we have our joint venture with Toyota. This has completely allowed a reinvention of the concept to bring BMWi individuality as well as technology.
The new Z is a sports car halfway between the Z4 and the Mercedes-Benz SL-Klasse.
Its light, visually impressive -derived from the Vision ConnectedDrive and 328 Hommage.
And the interior is a driver dream not forgetting its minimalist surfaces and controls.
Again it will offer more for the price. There could eventually even be an M model. Although that is not 100% confirmed yet.

2. BMW M7. Hopefully, The forthcoming BMW M760Li answers that question.

3. Less X models. The SUV is the best selling segment through all levels.
That is why everyone, including the fellow Germans will be increasing their SUV ranges from Porsche from a Q3 based mini-Macan to Lamborghini or possibly Bugatti. It is inevitable.

4. The M cars sound great already. I still find my M5 extremely satisfying.

5. Proper CSL versions. - watch this space... The CSL brand is returning to BMW M. The absolutely awesome M4 GTS is a precursor to what progress can be done to that car. CSL will be the BMW M brands innovation lab for further performance. The CSL Hommage cars over a taster of how the idea will work. In the meantime enjoy the M4 GTS. Its innovation is the depth of its brilliance.
Happy New Year!

I want:
1. Proper super car (i8 is a great innovation but where's the R8, SLS rival?
2. More focus on small, sporty cars. So many new models but Z4M is gone, Z2 needs to be made as cheaply as possible that it hasn't came yet, the 1er sedan is a FWD.
3. Proper M cars - less cost cutting (M2 doesn't even get M mirrors now)

Reality is SUVs is now mainstream and costs needs to be saved.

What is it with the 9series that cannot be achieved by the 7series? The 7series especially in LWB form is a pretty big car, and every generation the model grows in size, who really is looking for a bigger car? And for those customers, wouldn't they pick something more exotic, like a RR or Bentley instead? Funny thing is BMW already owns RR. Wouldn't they find more success in building something sub RR-Ghost, rather than a bigger BMW? Something that would suck is the 9series pushing the 7series down a grade, meaning the 7series can no longer be as competitive against the S class and A8 - unless the competitors also adopt the same strategy.

You would find that the 9er would be bought in the same circles as those that have a line of cars to choose from. Kind of similar to boutique brands - one for every occasion. They would have a Bentley and a Rolls-Royce as well as possibly a Maybach.
The reason for the inclusion of the 9er is that some see the 7er as not as special and not as exclusive anymore. And we have identified there is a customer base that want a more exclusive BMW model.

The 9er is intended to be the Maybach rival from BMW but as an individual model not a spin-off. And of course the Rolls-Royce is not intentionally a BMW that is why people want an exclusive BMW. They want to drive it.
Mercedes already have the same strategy with the Maybach, and I would not put it past the mighty VAG to react especially since the 9er was originally envisioned by Herbert Diess as was the original 9er intended with a V16 back in the late eighties under Wolfgang Reitzle.

The i8 has potential to match the entry sports cars yet still keep to the same philosophy of using less cylinders and of course still be considerably lighter.

As of now small sports cars are in decline.

Enough with the Mirrors. It has been explained that the mounts on the 2er are different than the 4er so it is not worth it to engineer a new mount when the mirrors still perform the same function and still look great.

At least the 9er would not be a large 7er. I like BMW's approach to fuether differentiate its cars from each other.

Just what the sector needs taking into account what is the current strategy by MB and Audi.

1. Hahahahha i8 is not a proper supercar..stop it.. it has a 4 cylinder Engine.. just for gods sake stop it

2. So you Think the 760 is equal to a M car.. again just stop it. By that measure BMW has had Mish 7ers since way back.. a v12 7er has been a part of the game long time now..that's not what we are asking for.. Hell it could even be V8..but M

3. Yes we all know they make Money but there is a limit..GTs and Xs as far as the Eye can see, change the slogan to ultimate utility Machines

4. No they do not sound great, you do not know great sound if that is great to you. Go listen to a AMG or a GTS porsche

5. Been watching that space for a decade.. GTS is cool but its priced like a supercar, which it is in terms of performance, damn thing has the same N ring time as the Zonda F which was the king of the ring not long ago..highly impressive.. BUT and this is a one huge kim kardashian sized BUT, its a damn 3 series!

I hate to break it to you but you are being too kind to the i8. It has a lawn mower engine;it is actually 3 cylinders and not 4.

No you stop it. Actually the i8 has a three cylinder which is unique to the i8. Plus its lighter and more innovative for more expensive sports cars.
Yet it does not cost multi-million euros. Its a headliner because it dares to be different. The next phase of i8 continues that. There will be more power and again it will still be the collective bargain of the decade.

The M760Li is fettled by the M Division under their M Performance line.
So they will introduce additional elements to distance the standard luxury filled 760Li from the alternative performance of the M760Li.

BMWs slogan is actually "Sheer Driving Pleasure"
The Ultimate Driving Machine is a phrase used only and by English speaking markets. And yes the X models are important to BMW just as Mercedes are developing more G models and Audi more Q models.
Its not going to change.

The M4 GTS is in fact a 4er. But it shows you the In depth transformation of a 4er. New engine with innovative technology and more Carbon fibre as an example the entire top section of the car is Carbon fibre.
Then you have excess weight removed whenever possible such as the wheel spokes. Its the competence that BMW have added to the GTS which will make it stand out. They have stripped their car to the bare minimum and applied more innovation and more performance but again at a unique price.
Is it any wonder why most countries have now sold their allocations.

Oh ha ha ha!! Stop it now with this marketing nonsense!! "Fettled" by the M Division? Do me a favour.

The M Performance line are sportier cars than standard models but the "M" link is tenuous at best. And that's coming from someone who OWNS an M135i.

Is it any wonder why most countries have now sold their allocations.

No. Not when they're produced in extremely limited numbers.
