6 Series (E24) BMW 6 Series (E24)

The BMW E24 is the first generation of 6 Series and was produced from 1976 to 1989. It replaced the E9 coupés and was solely produced in the 2-door coupé body style. Aside from the M635CSi/M6 models, the E24 was powered by a range of M30 straight-6 engines.
Yup. I miss mine a lot.

An early one, basic exterior as possible in lightgreen metallic, that's my dream 6er. The beauty of it's design is best shown in that way imo. It's indeed like a fine red wine, it ages very well and is getting better and better time passes on.

1980s were the finest years for the three German automotive brands IMO. Mercedes, BMW, Porsche had their best car line and they were exclusive enough to be regarded in the same league as RR and Ferrari. I was a teenager and used to collect brochures of the 6 series. Bring back some good old memories. BMW was such an exotic name for me back then. These cars IMO were the finest of BMW designs whose design language started in late 1960 early 1970s. The 8 series was worthy successor to the 6 series but after that everything went downhill. The brand became a common name, the designs lost the exoticness. I feel the same with Mercedes and Porsche. Only Audi is the one that actually became better in design than before although it never was an exotic brand name for me but it is a far more attractive nameplate now than in 1980s.

Not only this car, the all BMW models of that time had this understated charm...Damn shame they don't make them like that anymore
Absolutely right. One other fine, more down to earth, example is the first 3-series. 323i is a true design-dream imo. But even a 316 looks as if it was designed for eternity. First 5er (E12?) also effortless, beautiful no-nonsense design.

The late 70's and 80's BMW models possessed so much timeless designs with perfect design features, character and proportions that made them the envy of many rival companies and emphasized BMW as been the ultimate driving machine and the sportiest brand amongst main stream cars. They possessed the perfect combination of simple elegance and sportiness. My dream models were the E30 333i/M3, the E28 M535i/M5, E24 635i and the E23 745i (SA edition).

Did BMW officially badge any these cars as an ///M6?

M6 in the US, M635CSi in Europe. Predictably the M6 had 256hp, the M635CSi had 286hp, owing to emissions regs etc.

edit: It was also referred to as the M6 in Japan, but I believe this got the more powerful Euro spec engine.

Those extra long US spec bumpers really spoil the cars elegant looks. If I was the owner of one of the US spec versions I would replace those ugly bumpers with the slimmer Euro spec bumpers.
