5 Series BMW 5 Series GT (aka PAS) - spy pics & info

The BMW 5 Series is an executive car manufactured and marketed by BMW since 1972. The car is sold as either a sedan or, since 1991, a station wagon (marketed as "Touring"). A 5-door fastback (marketed as "Gran Turismo") was sold between 2009 and 2017. Each successive generation has been given an internal G-code designation since 2017. Previously, a F-code designation was used between 2010 and 2016, while an E-code designation was used between 1972 and 2010. These are used to distinguish each model and generation from each other.

Like I said: do not focus too much on the tail details. They are wrong. So are the proportions. The tail is not as high & clumsy as depicted in H's CGI.
But the overall fastback / hatchback- ish shape is correct. With the tail door glass steeply running deep into the roof - making the roof creating kind a overhang over the tail window. Greenhouse is very coupeish - dropping from constantly from A-pillar to D-pillar.
Unconventional triangular kink by Huck is wrong. Check the spy pics very closely. In one of them Hoffmeister kink can be clearly seen through the cabin: it is a classic one - as seen on many other BMWs, yet creating a 3rd side window between C & D-pillar like on X6.
The shoulder line is a sharp crease: sitting very high & being very straight - positioned in the line with door handles, running parallel to the bottom edge of greenhouse - way back (through the tail lights) to the rear. Door handles are typical BMW - with sharp crease running in the middle - horizontally.
Lower character line (a mild crease) is very straight as well, and positioned very low: just at the bottom edge of the side doors.
Between the character lines there is as panel changing shape from convex to concave - typical for current flame surfaced BMWs.
Door sills / rocker panels seem to be missing on the prototype in the pics.
Hood is sculptured heavily - with typical sharp V-style shaped two side creases running from A-pillars towards the upper outer corners of kidney grilles.
There is also a single central crease on the hood - running vertically from windshield towards BMW badge above the grille.
Kidney grilles seem to be wide & quite narrow - appearing to be quit rectangular. The line where grille area meets the hood looks very straight / horizontal - similar to E85 Z4.
Headlights seem aggressive looking - shape is very sloping (look the positions of the light projectors), very curvy (position of a turn signal), and narrow.
Side mirrors are very sporty ... F01 7er style. Orange tapes mimicking turn signals are fake - like on all contemporary BMW prototypes.
Dashboard looks similar to X5 / X6 with strong E85 Z4 touch.
More when new spy shots appear.

You should revisit the first X6 spy pic thread, when that car had as much camo as this one....95% of the posters there thought it was stupid.

Exactly.... and the way i see it is if BMW continues to increase sales and subsequently profit... the core BMW products are only going to get better and better... after all BMW is a company thats trying to make money for shareholders... i think we forget that sometimes.... and i think this has potential to be extremely cool.... not an out and out BMW machine so to speak.. but there are guys out there with families and kids and dogs and groceries to pick up for the wife that might not want an SUV and want more space then a normal estate verision, and they still really want a BMW because just like us they are brand orientated.... this is the perfect car for them... thats just my 2 cents worth

Mind that driving dynamics of this car won't be compromised. Despite a bit higher roof line than current 5er Touring it is expected the center of gravity will be the same as the current 5er Touring. And with better engines, chassis solutions, transmission, suspension, steering the car will drive better than the E61 5er Touring. 5er Touring - which is capable to turn in to M5.

IMO it doesn't. IMO it could be a simple cube on 4 wheels - if it drives like a true BMW then it deserves a BMW badge.
Although even the shape of F5 will be very BMW like: sporty, dynamic, coupeish.
So, instead of 5er sedan or Touring you can opt for F5 which offers you more space inside, better headroom, better versatility, more standard cargo space. For almost the same driving dynamics as F10/11 - or better than E60/1. And much more exclusivity & presence.
A perfect car for someone who finds 5er Sedan / Touring not spacious enough, and X5 too truck-ish & too big (with compromised driving dynamics due its size).
Yet I guess mostly women will drive F5. Or family-oriented young & wealthy males. More stylish than X5 or X3, and more practical for day-to-day traffic (in Europe - since it targets Euro markets mainly), and less utilitarian than X3. And can be ordered w/o xDrive (standard).

Eni, not even for i second i doubted BMW's driving dynamics and a characteristics of BMW car in it, it's just that shape/looks and that segment aren't my cup of tea and that's it. For me it's pointless and ugly at the same time. Sorry, i simply don't care about it. End of the story.

I admit neither I can't see myself in such a car (same case with many BMW models) - but I understand it & can see the population that will love it.
And not seeing myself in such a car doesn't mean I despise it. Eg. I can't imagine myself in any car larger than 5er. But I still adore 6er, 7er, X5, X6 & even Concept CS.

I was asked to post my opinion here, depending on what I "saw" and what I think the car will be. I'll have to disapponit some of you by saying that what I saw wasn't enough to make a proper impression. What I saw was a covered car where only the left head light was and the left part of the bumper below it were visible. Kinda like the preview image of the F700. I liked this tiny bit that I saw, but if the whole context isn't right that eve the most beautiful headlights wouldn't help. Anyway, just wanted you to know that I'm speculating here just like you all do.
I have to admit that I'm more with the skeptical party here. Driving dynamics and all will be like a real BMW, there's no doubt in that, but I'm worrying about the position of the car and its sexappeal. Don't expect something extremely cool like the X6. I think what we'll finally get is a van-ish looking car. because anything other than that would be too clos to either the X6 or the 5er Touring, hence there's no point in making such a car at all. I'm sure they screw it like MB did with the R-Class, but I'm expecting something like the Vision GST which was the conceptual preview of the R. The car had very nice proportions that went lost on the way to production, but still it had more of a van character than of an SUV or a station wagon - and here is the point where I say that I don't know whether we're gonna get what we want to see from BMW. Notice that I'm talking about the design and not the performance.
Anyway.. as I said before. I'm speculating. maybe the guys at the design studio did finde the magic proportion that shuts up all critics, but I do doubt it.

At this point I am giving the benefit of doubt to BMW...and if I would be in the market for a car like this than I would be more than happy to be able to choose a BMW..
What I am trying to understand is the business case for this car.
If its a niche car it would make sense to base it on an existing, high volume car : X6 is the niche product -> X5 is the bigger, high volume car . Both share a high % of components ...same wheelbase, probably similar interior, same drivetrain...
So are we seeing here the next 5 series ? (wheelbasewise?). Its supposed to have more room than the 5 touring. What you gain in hight, you loose by the sloping rear..so in order to have a noticable plus of room it must be much longer (in Autobild it says 5 meters, which is maybe 16cm more than current 5 series)...
I guess the whole lineup of BMW will be streched upmarket with future models... : The next 7 series will be bigger than current one (I remember reading the standard length F01 will have the same size a todays long wheelbase version E66)...
Judging by this the next 5 series will probably also grow , which in turn means the difference in length beween 5 Touing and F5 will be even smaller...
Where is the extra room coming from , that differentiates it from the touring ? Why even open up a new model line (F series) , if its 'just' a body variant of the 5 series ?
Maybe its bigger than we think and its not based on the current or next 5 series, but on the current 7 series, like the Z4 inherited components of the 'old' 3 series...(correct me , if I'm wrong)
It would help to see it in comparison/next to another car to be able to judge a little better.
Btw: I am really surprised by the lack of camo on the sloping rear...If you think about the sophisticated camo they used to hide the rear roofline of the X6...

To my suprise though....in the above picture the car has a very similar profile to the Lexus GS. Take a look...
I know the BMW is a bit more coupe-ish since the roofline begins to slope downward after the A-pillar, rather than reaching its slope-peak at the B-pillar like with the Lexus GS (and other normal sedans - eg: 5er)
It seems like BMW's come up with a clever trick to create these coupe off-shoots. Looking at the new X6, it's the same story. The roofline begings to drop after the A-pillar to create that forward-pushing greenhouse, and then having the roofline end very close to the rear end of the car - as opposed to a clear and flat boot deck in you'll see with many sedans.
Very clever way to offer a secondary niche model.
5er is the base -- change the roofline, increase the height of the waistline -- and bingo, you've got yourself a coupe variant = F5
Same story for the X5 to X6 transformation.

Haven't seen uncamoed car in person, but your interpretation seems OK.
1.) Just push upper tail window line further into the roof. To the point when the roof raises and creates spoiler / overhang over the glass. There should be another line. Could you please outline the roof spoiler as well.
2.) Also the line on the boot lid - the one above license plate (the one that creates integrated boot lid spoiler lip ) should be place a tad lower - so the spoiler / edge is more massive.
3.) The side bottom line of the greenhouse does not run continuously towards the back (like shoulder line do), but cuts above the wheel arches and then reappears few inches before tail ends - like on many others BMW designs.
Check it out eg. the X6 .
4.) IMO also the Hofmeister's kink sits a tiny bit too high.
5.) Bumper line / edge just below the tail lights is missing on both sides - running via side wings to wheel arches.
6.) Shoulder line (character lines) seems pushe too far front. Normally it ends before wheel arch starts. And it doesn't bent down so much in the front. It should be more straight - very in-line with the door handles.

Chack the pics of X6 tail for your further inspiration. They should help a bit to visualize better what I'm talking in the paragraphs above.
And then save that layer (outlines) separately & post it here.

Funny thing is, I created that outline using MS Paintbrush..hehe..
But I'll instally Photoshop and get to creating that layer you suggested. That outline image was supposed to just be quick thing to give others a better idea of the car (as well as to test my understanding of BMW design).. but now with your feedback I feel compelled to do a better job taking your suggestions into account.

In my opinon it seems that the F01 and the F5 share the same wheelbase and probably even more ..the camo of the front is almost identical, I think its even possible they are identical up to the B-pillar.
If I am correct, it would make more sense to me than an F5 based on the current or next 5 as explained above (no additional space in comparison to 5 Touring)
In this case the F5 would be a derivate of the F01 , a 7 series hatchback ...that you could really call LuxurySportCruiser
This would also help economically , because in essence it would add volume to the 7 series...
What do you think, or am I off completely here....
I tried to compare recent F01 spyshots with the F5 spyshots to get an idea of its size...I 'calbrated' both pictures by the wheel size...Its surely ot 100% correct but I did it anyway :At this point I am giving the benefit of doubt to BMW...and if I would be in the market for a car like this than I would be more than happy to be able to choose a BMW..
What I am trying to understand is the business case for this car.
If its a niche car it would make sense to base it on an existing, high volume car : X6 is the niche product -> X5 is the bigger, high volume car . Both share a high % of components ...same wheelbase, probably similar interior, same drivetrain...
So are we seeing here the next 5 series ? (wheelbasewise?). Its supposed to have more room than the 5 touring. What you gain in hight, you loose by the sloping rear..so in order to have a noticable plus of room it must be much longer (in Autobild it says 5 meters, which is maybe 16cm more than current 5 series)...
I guess the whole lineup of BMW will be streched upmarket with future models... : The next 7 series will be bigger than current one (I remember reading the standard length F01 will have the same size a todays long wheelbase version E66)...
Judging by this the next 5 series will probably also grow , which in turn means the difference in length beween 5 Touing and F5 will be even smaller...
Where is the extra room coming from , that differentiates it from the touring ? Why even open up a new model line (F series) , if its 'just' a body variant of the 5 series ?
Maybe its bigger than we think and its not based on the current or next 5 series, but on the current 7 series, like the Z4 inherited components of the 'old' 3 series...(correct me , if I'm wrong)
It would help to see it in comparison/next to another car to be able to judge a little better.
Btw: I am really surprised by the lack of camo on the sloping rear...If you think about the sophisticated camo they used to hide the rear roofline of the X6...

In my opinon it seems that the F01 and the F5 share the same wheelbase and probably even more ..the camo of the front is almost identical, I think its even possible they are identical up to the B-pillar.
If I am correct, it would make more sense to me than an F5 based on the current or next 5 as explained above (no additional space in comparison to 5 Touring)
In this case the F5 would be a derivate of the F01 , a 7 series hatchback ...that you could really call LuxurySportCruiser
This would also help economically , because in essence it would add volume to the 7 series...
What do you think, or am I off completely here....
