2 Series BMW 2er Gran Coupe Speculation

The BMW 2 Series is a range of subcompact executive cars (C-segment) manufactured by BMW since the year 2014. The 2 Series was created when BMW spun-off the 2-door models (coupé and convertible) of the BMW 1 Series into a separate series.
Compared to 150 000 units of the 5 series on the same market is almost nothing.

23% is not almost nothing. I know you're against FWD BMW's so will jump on any opportunity to stick the boot into one, but the standpoint that any car that sells less then 24% of the higher volume models is equivalent to "nothing" is just ridiculous.

Is this going to replace the slow selling 1 series sedan in China?

Doesn't look like it as there appears to be a follow up model of the sedan testing also.

Audi sold 32k A3 sedans in 2014 , first year they were introduced to China , BMW sold 35K in it’s first year of introduction. I’d say that’s pretty good.

Lets not forget that the 1er sedan is in more affordable segment with much higher volume and BMW is presented by a model that is SPECIFICALLY developed for the Chinese market and is not available (except in Mexico) on any other major market. So all R&D expenses are concentrated on this 35 k units annually of a low margin car.

It's not just more affordable... it's the entry level model. It's not about shifting massive volume, it's about getting people into the BMW brand. For most of these premium manufacturers the cheapest model is never the highest volume one, and especially not when it's in it's first generation. You're comparing it to an established model in it's third generation that is probably the highest benchmark of average price × volume there is within BMW's line up... of course it's not going to live up to that benchmark.

Expenses shared with Brilliance automotive and still ammortised over 35,000 units per year... so that's already at least 70,000 units so far, and probably 120,000 before the new model gets close to debuting. It's been independently verified that BMW can produce the i3 profitably and that does less globally. The UKL based F52 would have required significantly less investment, and will doubtless be cheaper to produce... if BMW think they can make sense of it on the grounds laid out above, for an entry point to the brand at the equivalent of €25,000, it wouldn't surprise me at all.

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Render: Mercedes CLA Rival Coming

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Render: Mercedes CLA Rival Coming

It's a 1 Series Sedan with a bit more pizzazz.
The proliferation of niche models has given birth to several swoopy sedans across multiple premium brands. With the 4 Series Gran Coupe and the 6 Series Gran Coupe (soon to be bumped to 8 Series family), BMW is a promoter of the trend, especially since the Bavarians are about to add a third model in the form of the 2 Series Gran Coupe (F44).

But don’t let association of the “2 Series” and “coupe” terms trick you into believing it will be rear-wheel drive like the 2 Series Coupe, because latest spy shots (attached at the end) have demonstrated the new member of the BMW family will ride on a FWD-based platform, with xDrive available for the more expensive variants. Based on the next-generation 1 Series hatchback, which will be demoted from a tail-happy setup to a FWD layout, the 2 Series Gran Coupe will essentially be BMW’s belated answer to the Mercedes CLA, another “coupe” that’s a sedan in every possible way.

TT Sportback of some kind – but the Ingolstadt-based marque denied such plans. Still, we won’t be too surprised if the next-generation A3 Sedan will spawn a more stylish sibling to fight the other two Germans.

The top-of-the-line 2 Series Gran Coupe is expected to be an M235i version with the same turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine as the X2 M35i, so expect output to hit the 300-horsepower mark. It is believed all flavors of the smallest GC will come equipped as standard in the M Sport spec, complete with 18-inch wheels, beefier brakes, sportier suspension settings, and seats with increased lateral support. An electrified M Performance derivative is also said to be in the works, with a combustion engine delivering 252 hp and an electric motor rated at 87 hp.

Our render attempts to preview the production version slated to debut sometime this year, most likely after the unveiling of the all-new 1 Series five-door hatchback.

I can't see it being called THE 2 Gran Coupe. Here they might call it the 2.8 or 8.2?:D

They shouldnt go MB by making their cheap cars look like their most expensive cars. Looks good but it’s too 8 series.

Those that have seen it say that the lines are crisp and the lower flanks are sculptural that helps it break up the mass of weight as showcased by the disguised panels alongside and on the front and rear of the car.
Remember. Wherever you see rivets it's a false panel.

Does look a little tall, and slightly flabby at the same time. The later could just be cladding, but the dimensions of the vehicle are looking less than sporty, IMHO.

The late Robin Williams appeared to have been a BMW brand ambassador. Here he is promoting the 2er Gran Coupe way back in...2002 !! Twilight Zone stuff indeed.

CS Boot spoiler, is nothing sacred?

I think it was the Alfa the first to take it, correct me if I'm wrong.
And now the magnificent Chevrolet Cavalier takes it as standard also from the 1.6 base model!
damn 3D printers..
