Comparison tests BMW 125i vs. Mercedes Benz A250

Thanks Soup.

I have moved this from the official A-Class thread to a new, Internal Combustion, thread for obvious reasons. ;)

Damn does the A-Classes front absolutely shame the 1ers. I mean, it's not even fair really. Also, the A's rear I think totally shames the 1ers, it actually makes the 1ers looks dated IMO. The side profiles.... I'm not sure about. The A's is much more inspired and initially interesting, though those lines are a mess and make the 1's look so elegant, thought out, and smooth. The A I think has more initial pop there, but will get dated faster as those fuzzy lines just get too fuzzy in time, while the 1's lines will always look good. Side profile wise, the A looks immature and almost funny with those scribbles, while the 1 looks more mature.... this can be a good or bad thing in this segment I guess.

And Jesus does the A's exposed metal inner door frame looks absolutely appalling and stick out like a sore thumb. Is that eye sore and unbecoming aesthetic to a brand like M-B really worth a few bucks saved per car?

Speaking of the interior, I think the 1ers looks better. I love M-B's minimalist approach, but in the A's case, I think it might look too cold and sparse, and the materials don't give me a warm visual.

Too bad about the automatic gearbox in the Benz. Not as good as VW DSG gearboxes. I just wish A-class had manual gearbox available.

The result, for those who missed it. ;)

A250 18" wheels with runflats -- MB Passion

I see the A-class is using same tyre as my car but mine are no runflats. Its a very good tyre, particularly in the wet :)

Ain't that A-class a very well designed car. Love it.
Can't stand the 1er. Never did, never will. It just doesnt exist for me.

It's funny how it goes. I loved the design of the A, when they showed it. Now it looks like a Citroën to me.

On the other hand, I hated the 1-series. But in that colour, with that bodykit, I suddenly like it a lot more than the A-Class...

Go figure.

Merc has went on about how the A has transformed from a mini-mpv to a conventional hatch but I think it now just looks like a mid-size MPV. Its certainly worse looking than the new Audi A3 and the (IMO) very good-looking F20 and quite beautiful Volvo V40. Also its engines arent quite up to BMW/Audi standards, some magazines/reviewers have complained about interior quality and as many have concluded, the drive is not up to the class standard. Its not a bad car, but its also not a great one and considering it may have well have lost this comparo it doesn't bode well for the forthcoming C-Class which will have to compete with the F30, which is universally agreed to be better than the F20. And why do almost all new Mercs have to have those air vents, a bit of originality would be appreciated.

I saw the new A3 today and it doesnt stand out in the crowd like A-class and 1-series. Looks similar to previous A3. What I've read A3 is pretty dull to drive too. Looks like Opel Astra, Scirocco are my favorites in this segment, then comes A-class and 1-series (with M-package, Xeon and the right color of course, without it, 1-series looks awful).

Mercedes with the A class made an Audi, a car that's not as sporty as the Bimmer nor as comfortable and spacious as we expect a Merc to be (in this case, that car is the A3).

So, between the premium germans I choose the A3: practical and understated. My default choose however should be the bimmer, but man it does looks horrible. If the facelift goes well, it will be my choice. The A class for me is a complete fail.

Regards!

too bad they cant redesign whole front for facelift

And I've driven the new A3, and to me, it takes the F20 back to the drawing board. It looks amazing and is a much bigger step to the older A3. Just looks so modern and sleak. And the interior... wow.
So, to each on its own, but cant help commenting on your "looks like the old car" comment, which I find so silly. You have to be blind to not tell the huge difference and step forward from the older A3.

You have to be a car nut to know its a new A3. No doubt about that. I have no idea what makes the new A3 modern. A-class looks modern but certainly not A3. And I dont need to drive the new A3 to know if I like the design or not, I just look at it.

Agreed, but only exterior design, because the interior and driving characteristics are great. Particularly the driving part.

Can't stand the 1er. Never did, never will. It just doesnt exist for me.

Fine, but I find it silly to disregard the 1er because of it's looks. It drives far beyond anything in this class has ever done.
Shame the front is so freaking ugly :(

In blue with the M-kit, I even like the front. There I said it, it's out there - you may point and laugh.

That is beacause you are a BMW nut, and always has been. I've heard throughout the years from you about Audis that "they all look the same" no matter what. I have a very good memory. So I'm leaving this discussion cause it's pointless. Yes, the A3 looks exactly the same... If you are a blind person.
