1 Series BMW 1 Series Convertible Spy Photos

The BMW 1 Series is a range of subcompact executive cars (C-segment) manufactured by BMW since 2004. Positioned as the entry-level model in BMW range of products, the first generation was produced in hatchback, coupé and convertible body styles.

Yup, I'm with you on all of that Merc1. I think this little cabrio looks tremendous - truly enticing in its proportion. Let's hope it doesn't look as awkward as it's 1er sibling when all the camo comes off.

Re: WCF: BMW 1 Series Convertible Spy Photos

Unless there's a real surprise brewing here, this thing will be like every BMW introduced under the new design disaster, sorry direction. Great proportions, perfect (or close enough) shape but spoiled by all sorts of gimmicky details such as the weird headlight units on every single model and the Bangle butt on some. As much as I'd like to like 'em, I just can't.

Re: WCF: BMW 1 Series Convertible Spy Photos

OK, this little convertible will probably be very good - but IMO, the 1 series is already a superfluous model in BMW's lineup - do you think BMW are starting to fall in to the same trap Mercedes has - trying to build a model for every conceivable occasion?.....which will ultimately compromise their integrity and brand identity.

Re: WCF: BMW 1 Series Convertible Spy Photos

Doesn't do nothing for me. I much prefer the Vauxhall Astra Twintop.

In fact, I WILL prefer the Astra Twintop or the Volkswagen Eos over this BMW 1-Series Cabrio.

Man...that car looks cramped! Look at the back, there is no room whatsover for the passengers in the back.

Canvas Roof???

Geez...Hello BMW! We are in the flippin 21st century! We want Electric Metal Folding Roof just like the Mercedes Roadsters!

Oh, I'm rather comfortable with the idea and necessity of the 1er make no mistake; the 1 series was very much a calculated move to counter the upward thrust from the premium hatchback brigade (Golf, A3 et al) into low-end 3 series territory. It's the execution and usability thereof that sees me of the opinion that the VW products are more complete and more desirable to all but the most obstinate rear-wheel drive fanatics. Remember BMW have in the past done a premium hatch in a 3er Compact and that car was not only pointless but also as ugly as sin. The 1er does seem to be selling well and as small, sporty, dynamic cars go this new cabrio is every bit core BMW material and will probably spoil the party for the premium folding hard-top FWD crop.

A fashion car for sure but appealing to a specific younger demographic.

As long as BMW stays clear of MPVs then I'm not yet as concerned about mass model proliferation. Though I know I will be in time to come.

Well I think cost is the issue with a folding hardtop on the 1-Series Cabrio. The new 3-Series Cabrio will have a folding hardtop, so the 1-series can't have one. BMW would run the risk of making either the 1 or the 3 look pointless depending on whether or not the which cabrio buyer wanted a softtop vs a hardtop. I can't wait to see this car officially. The proportions are just as neat as can be. Maybe they'll tone down the design details from the 1-Series hatchback some because I'd hate to see that sagging cutline at the bottom and wierd looking headlights ruin this very promising design.

Hmmm, i don't know, but afaic the headlights are the best part on the 1er. And i've seen some Rieger tuned 1ers with eyebrows - :icondrool , even better!

:t-cheers:

First I do not belive that the hatchback brigade (Golf, A3 et al) treathened the 3 series, not in this time of easy crediting/leasing and growing upper middle numbers around the world.
I don't buy this "Honey, I traded our 3er for a Golf. Just imagine all those jelous people at work who only have a 3er!".
Thing is that this was a growing segment and BMW wanted a piece of it .
And they have done things in tipicaly BMW way.
As long as BMW makes proper cars/light trucks in a proper BMW way and don't lose focus on core models it's gonna be OK.
From what I've read in interviews, BMW heads know very well what BMW stands for. And while MB can be blamed for throwing to the trash their "Enginereed like no other" for the "Everything to everyone" nonsense, BMW can blamed for being to much inloved with their image.

...

Believe what you will.

I won't ask you to explain why I went for a Golf 4 GTi and most of my mates went for A3 Turbos over a 318i for similar money. Quite simply bottom end 4 cylinder 3ers aren't as exciting nor as attractive as a Golf GTI or A3 2.0T SB or whatever in my eyes. 318i - drove it, hated it. I'd give you my own personally biased view on bottom end 3 series owners but that would compromise my relative neutrality.

Facts remain, BMW released the 1 series as a response to a very real threat at that end of the market. And now they're milking it with another flawed product that appeals only to the fashion/badge conscious and the RWD obsessive who can't afford a 3er.

Not really... fanboys usually write stuff like "you guys are gr8 at justifying bmw´s actions" when discussing market segments. I take offense to s#!t like that.

Yeah....but you are talking about "The Artist" here - in his eyes BMW will never come close to Mercedes-Benz.

The worse is that the argument wasn't about BMW vs MB... at least not in my eyes. :t-hands:

LOL, don't let it worry you - The Artist is a major Mercedes-Benz fanboy - I've learned to live with it :D

Re: WCF: BMW 1 Series Convertible Spy Photos

I don't even see why there's a reason to argue here... it's right there in front of your eyes. We're not trying to defend BMW for anything. Look!

1. Lightweight... therefore no metal roof
2. Price... therefore no metal roof
3. Simplicity... therefore no metal roof

BMW 1 series convertible = german version of MX5... simple as that.

If we were talking about the upcoming 3er or the 6er, I'd understand. But this is as clear as daylight.

Re: WCF: BMW 1 Series Convertible Spy Photos

A German MX5? Are they even concerned about that car? I'd think it was more like an own-brand Mini Cooper cabriolet.

I'm not sure the price thing stacks up - the VW Eos isn't exactly going to be huge money - but the rest is fine by me. Plus, the less they spend on the roof, the more they can spend elsewhere (or the more they can pocket) for a car costing the customer the same.

As for Artist.. yeah, he likes Mercedes, but wasn't he considering an M6 for his next car?
