cost.. bmw isnt poor.. and it will bring more sales so its a win thing in the end
weight.. this car is not a performance car.. the SLK55 is a hardtop.. it performs pretty well for a ordinary use.. and more so.. even bmw standards.. cause its not a M car
truck room.. doesen matter much with these kinds of cars.. and again.. new hardtops dooesent take up so much more space
....
thank god for the E93 then

BMW want high profit per unit. Hardtop is still too expensive for a car around or just under $30k. When technology gets cheaper I'm sure we will see 1er/2er with hardtop - in next generation maybe.

Yes, some manufacturesrs make small CCs (Peugeot, Nissan, Renault, Opel, etc). But do they make high profits? No, they don't - they have to count on mass sales. Something BMW can not - because low production (they do not even have capacities) keeps prices higher (lowe supply, high demand = higher prices).

E93 is in higher class - more profitable.

Also 6er is a good candidate for hardtop in the next generation. :usa7uh:

Re: WCF: BMW 1 Series Convertible Spy Photos

Wow!!! I have to say that I'm very suprised to see these pictures. It seem like BMW want to earn some more money in the lower market. Looking at the pictures the proportions of the car appeal to me and it looks very cute. This is far from a Z4 or 3 coupe competitor. It's more of a MX5 competitor. A convertible for those who want something small but not to expensive and on top of that they will have braging rights, saying that they own a drop top bimmer.

Price wise it will probably have a starting price of around 200k. To be honest I'm loving it allready, it's very cute. Put some nice 19 inch rims on it and you're good to go.

Here is chop of how the car might end up looking.

OK... here I go again:

COST: is higher to the consumer, I didn't mean BMW
WEIGHT: small cars tend to favour fuel economy, where extra weight hinders it
SPACE: even though new hardtop are more space efficient, it's still not that great considering the car is a small (meaning not much room to begin with) 4 seater (meaning you might have to accomodate more that 2 ppl)... I mean the CLK isn't a hardtop right?

Again, not to say you aren't right that a hardtop could be possible (I mean look at the Eos), but I'm not sure it would make sense IMO. I'm not even convinced that the E93 should be hardtop... leave that to roadsters.

Exactly... this car isn't competing with the Slk or the CLK... not even the Audi TT. This car is the first from the big 3... there's no Aclass convertible and I'm pretty sure there's no A3 Convertible either.

This car is pretty much aimed at the MX5. It has very much the same philosophy. Lightweight, simplistic and pure driving enjoyment. And if BMW is to do that, the price has to stay somewhat low. All you guys were bitching and moaning how expensive the BMW 1 series can get so this will be even more expensive. A hardtop will not help at all

Re: WCF: BMW 1 Series Convertible Spy Photos

mehh you guys are gr8 at justifying bmw´s actions.. imo i hate canvas.. and i know they could do it if they wanted to..

I'm sure they could... but you gotta see where the 1 series convertible is aimed at. And that's the lower market.

The Z3/Z4 are aimed at the Miata, they are both roadsters. Really the only folding hardtops that make any sense are ones that are put on roadsters. I'm almost certain putting a retractable hardtop on a cabrio would eat some sales of the coupe version.

No they are not!? Since when does the SLK/Z4/TT segment compete with the Miata?

Re: WCF: BMW 1 Series Convertible Spy Photos

Miata is a much cheaper car so I dont see it as a Z4/SLK/Boxster condender. Instead I want to add Nissan 350Z Roadster.

Re: WCF: BMW 1 Series Convertible Spy Photos

My god what a car.

Imagine how the coupe will look and imagine even further how the M2 coupe will look.

I am not cabrio buyer. But i am glad bmw is comming with the cabrio so i hope it will not be long till we see pics of the coupe.

I have an 130i some people may not like the looks but this drives so increadable good. I love it. But i like coupe styling more. So 130i coupe fantastic. A M2 coupe thats a dream come thru.

I love the looks. I heard the driving experinece is great as well.

Re: WCF: BMW 1 Series Convertible Spy Photos

Got to say that the proportions look good - lets hope the detailing looks like the CS1, ie an absolute stunner. Then again I find myself saying something similiar at every BMW spyshot/release. Am I a BMW fanboy? lol

Re: WCF: BMW 1 Series Convertible Spy Photos

Just me

I have only mounted a Limited slip diff on my 130i. I have so much fun driving this car you can t imagine. When the M2 arrives the wife gets the 130i. And i give myself a present an M2 i can t wait.

It is the Cabrio .
At the wheel is the projekt manager for this programme , this is the unit taking the first prototype or their new (baby) taking it's first steps , the coupe follows in the next week.

BMW acknowledge that both coupe and cabrio introduces this series to the USA.

Re: WCF: BMW 1 Series Convertible Spy Photos

This car is going to be what the Cadillac Escalade was to Cadillac, to BMW. A hot fashion accesory on wheels, everyone will be able to afford a nice and well equipped BMW. If you guys think this is ugly, I'd encourage you to take a look at some pics of the CS1 concept, then come back w/ some new replies. :D I'd gladly buy one if it was made in an M var., which would make perfect sense given that this car is around the size of the old E30 M3. Equipped w/ either a turbo or high revving I6, this car will be a blast to drive, especially given its' size. I'm am a tad concerned about the price point here in the states, I wouldn't be suprised if it started at something like.... $25 - 28k? I predict demand will be especially high as well, which will make these cars just as pricey on the second hand market. I'd look for this car to have much sucess like the Mini, as well as to see adverts showing the connection between the old 2002 and the new 2er/1er coupe. I might, just might take this over a 3. :t-cheers: Anyone else care to join me? :D

Yes it most certainly does. Its going to be compact and mean looking. Uh am I lusting for a BMW again? The top fits on a like a little baseball cap.

Yes, that is a good thing. In further looking at those pics, this cabrio looks more and more like the outgoing E46 Cabriolet or even like the 3-Series cabrio before that. I don't normally get this excited about spy pics, but this thing has the potential to be hot if it doesn't have a whole lot of weird cutlines and angles.
