1st:Mercedes S-Class
2nd:Lexus LS

Their verdict:
If you’re in the market for the ultimate luxury car, both the Mercedes S-Class and Lexus LS are likely to be on your shortlist. No other models come close to their quality, technology, equipment, comfort and refinement – not even the Bentley Flying Spur or Rolls-Royce Phantom.
But in concentrating so hard on these areas, Lexus has missed a critical trick – to make the occupants feel good. The LS460 is highly impressive and has incredible engineering, but it lacks personality, coming across as clinical and bland. The Merc is every bit as talented and rides better, yet while it doesn’t have the charisma of the best British luxury cars, it’s more engaging to own and live with than the Lexus. As a result, it wins comfortably here.

The S is truely the best luxury car in the world.

Great post man :usa7uh: Two of my favourite modern day luxury cars and in particular, I admire this comment:

:D Btw, love that blue on the LS460. Much appreciated post :t-cheers:

I sat in a s600 and I was dissapointed by the interior, it was good dont get me wrong but I expected it to be better than that of the S8 which it wasnt.

I also dont believe that its better than a RR phantom. The bentley doesnt really count as its a sporty luxury tourer.

What bothers me about every Lexus I've ever sat in, including the new LS, is that the feel, look and even the smell of the cabin reminds me of a Toyota. It's a mental hurdle that I'll never get over, unless Toyota somehow divorces the design and production of the Lexus brand from the rest of their vehicles.

As for the new S. I was neither impressed or let down by the new interior. The tactile experience was so-so throughout. Digital speedo is a really cool touch, and would fool you if you weren't looking for it.

Personally having driven the new S and actually being able to push it just a little bit, I can whole heartedly agree with the thought that it is the best Luxury car in the world. While it doesn't offer the same refinement as the RR or Maybach it comes darn close and for half the price tag. As for not liking the interior or exterior, well those are personal views so that has nothing to do with the aesthetics of the car.

edit: 1,000th post...WOOT WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:t-cheers:

I think it tells much about the magazine if they compare Lexus LS and MB S to Rolls Royce... Nuff said.

half of the things they said about RR vs MB is true

technology yes
equipment yes
comfort may very well be
refinement maybe not

they didnt mention quality of materialls or status of the car..wich obviously is RR´s domain.. to compare there would be stupid..other than that the RR isnt all that superb

I have "tested" the Bentley Arnage T 1000 Times!
And it's way better than a S and that silly LS thingy car...
IN EVERY WAY (not Tec doh)

But Luxury Is Bentley not a LS (blæh) or S-Class Im sorry!!

I've been lucky enough to sit in a RR, Maybach, and the new S-Class and comfort wise the RR and Maybach are
in a much higher class than the Mercedes IMHO!:)

It was just a comparitive statement isssued with which does not make any difference to the test on hand which is the LS vs the S.

Rolls Royce maybe the utlimate Luxo barge, maybe the Maybach, but when it comes to the complete car (luxury, built, performance, technology, handling and class) nothing comes close to the new S-class.

The only thing Toyota to me is that damned clock on the dash - it escapes me why they couldn't remove that clock and relied on a on-board clock in the LCD infotainment system. I guess it is as customary to them putting a clock in a Japanese car as would a German would put heavy doors as a prominent feature in a German car.

Ha! Don't even get me started about the damn LCD clock!

For some crazy reason, despite all the obsessive, painstaking work Toyota has put into turning Lexus into a first-rate luxuruy brand, ugly green digital clocks straight out of 1986 are still found on every single dash, including the new LS! It's crazy.

A pictorial review:

It does look good here, but is the body leaning too much? You be the judge.

Nice interior, superb materials, but nothing any different design-wise from a high-end Camry or Avalon.

What nice eyes you have my dear.

Where is the engine?

I'm not much to look at, but I'm right up with the best in competence, and I have more standard "kit".

Look ma, I'm able to keep my body more "upright".

Much more somber in here.

What the hell is this switch for?

How a real engine bay should look, well sorta.

May I interest you in a cold drink, kind sir?

Let me think.

2) What the hell is this switch for?

1) Yes, I think the LS is leaning more than the S in that bend. :D

2) I'm guessing its night vision. :usa7uh:

Yeah I knew that was for the night vision, I was trying to make a funny there. The way it looks it could stand for moonlight or something.

Just to show how thoroughly engineered the LS is; when the engineers were designing the ash-tray lids and storage lids of the interior, they made sure that the lids closed at the same rate as each other. Now THAT is attention to detaill.
