Is the Jaguar XF’s reign at the top of the executive class about to be ended? The British saloon was our Car of the Year in 2008, and has already seen off the latest Mercedes E-Class – but now it faces its stiffest challenge yet.

Verdict:
Margins of victory in this class are usually incredibly tight, but the 5-Series surprised us with its strong showing here. In the end, it ran out a comfortable winner – which is all the more impressive given its rival’s position as our reigning champion.

The new BMW achieves the incredible feat of providing the kind of driving enjoyment, agility and grip you expect from a 3-Series, with the comfort and refinement of the company’s luxurious 7-Series. Admittedly, our car had the clever Adaptive Drive set-up and it costs slightly more than the Jaguar, but on this evidence the 5 is the best car in this sector – and worth its small price premium.

For its part, the XF is still a class act, and it now comes with an engine to match its looks. It’s still the most elegant executive car choice, but it’s no longer the best...

Ranking
1st - BMW 530d SE
The 530d is an incredibly talented and desirable machine. It doesn’t break new ground, but it’s all the car most people will ever need. We are looking forward to testing the imminent entry-level 520d, which at £28,165 is more affordable, too.

2nd - Jag XF 3.0D S Luxury
Make no mistake, the XF remains a truly brilliant executive car – it has just come up against a younger and more talented rival. The extra punch of the flagship diesel provides impressive pace, but the BMW is a more complete package.

Looks like BMW have hit a home run for Autoexpress to pick it so convincingly over a British car and a very good British car at that too. Having said that, the Jag is a beautiful car, just saw one yesterday in light blue metallic paint, left me stunned at how good it looked especially the rear 3/4 view.

530d also quicker than the Jag despite having less power but also with lower weigth.

Jaguar / BMW
0-60/30-70mph: 6.5 / 5.7 secs 6.2 / 5.4 secs
30-50mph in 3rd/4th: 3.0 / 4.2 secs 2.6 / 3.4 secs
50-70mph in 5th/6th/7th: 5.2 / 7.2 / n/a secs 4.6 / 5.2 / 8.7 secs
Top speed/rpm at 70mph: 155mph / 1,550rpm 155mph / 1,500rpm

I think the F10 looks better than the Jag.

Also looks outstanding in Titanium Silver which is the staple color of BMW's!:usa7uh:

So expected.

Only thing I would like to add is that I would pick the E over the XF ANY day of the week.

The F10 is going to win every non biased test, because it's one of the best cars ever made :bowdown::bowdown:

I was talking about this with my father today, I´d never go for a Jag before any other BMW or Mercedes (Audi is just meh to me).

The Jag just has soo much style and charm! Not sure about driving or value for money but personallyif you want both of these..

E-class please:)

The 5er era has just started. Just sit back, relax & wait for a new success from now on, for the new Bavarian lady! :usa7uh:

Excitement is definitely mounting for the 5er, can not wait to see and drive it in real life....that photo is very flattering and the silver looks gorgeous. :D

And this completely unbiased conclusion is based on countless hours behind the wheel? :eusa_clap:D

No, it's based on putting the cars head to head for a couple of hours. 5er wins. With countless of hours behind the wheel of the 5er, the gap will only increase :D

The F10 is the W211 of this gen, or the E39 if you want.

As a previous owner of both the E60 and W211, I'm happy to say that again we have a generation of cars where I want to own both the BMW and Mercedes Benz for a period of time. Both are tremendously well resolved vehicles.

Good point :t-cheers:

Side by side like that, the F10 looks a bit like the X-type! Must be something with the hood.

I think this is an expected result. The E60 was about on par with the XF and the F10 seems to be a step up in almost every respect compared to the E60.

In real life, however, I would be hard pressed to make a choice. I love the XF but the F10 is surely the more sensible option in this class.

Having to choose between an XF and an F10 woul dbe realy easy for me, even with the fresher design a jaguar still has the 'old peoples car' stigma for me, although I am sure lots of you will disagree.
The F10 looks better then the XF IMO and also better then the E class. I would love to drive it so I can't wait for the presentation at my local BMW dealer.

Don't waste your time. Klier gives BMW enthusiasts a bad name. I've been accused of having an obsession with Klier but it's hard to ignore the statements he makes. He will surely miss the irony in his post of claiming the 5 will win every unbiased test yet then comes out with the most biased statement ever. At least biased journalists actually get inside and drive the 5 before unleashing their bias. Klier hasn't even seen a 5 yet.

And I wonder what Scott has to say about this. British mag placing the BMW above the Jag?

Wow!! both look absolutely gorgeous!! Amazing cars! And very sporty looking. The F10 really has some design elemants of the XF, but is much more limousine then kind of Coupé design like the Jag! Really love both cars!
