5 stars - BMW
Practical touches such as the opening tailgate glass help to counter the fact that the 520d isn’t the biggest car here. Add in excellent economy, a great auto, entertaining handling and fixed-price servicing, and the BMW makes a fantastic family car – just ditch the M Sport suspension.
4 stars - Jaguar
The XF Sportbrake is hugely comfortable, comes with lots of goodies and has a feelgood factor that will put a smile on your face every time you drive it. While it’s close to its rivals for boot space and running costs, the noisy diesel and downshift-happy auto drop it to second.
4 stars - Audi
What a difference a gearbox makes. The A6 Avant won its first test, and the same strengths of a big boot and high-quality interior remain. But the Multitronic auto isn’t as good as the manual, while a lack of practical touches goes against the Audi in this encounter.
